If the cleaning player arrives and the fetcher is already securing the ball there is no use in trying to smash him back, as all you are doing is helping the fetcher get the ball onto their side quicker. If the fetcher is locked on the ball, the first action should be to roll him.
I do agree that the roll needs to be aggressive enough so the cleaner ends up on top to recycle themselves 1st. Good point.
