@SEVIL999 Having owned it for quite some time I can say the GH100L is passable for "Metal" but in a more classic sense of the genre...For 80's Thrash/Metal it totally rocks! Which was more or less why I got it in the first place! For more modern metal there a few better options, that will also undoubtedly be more flexible at the same time. This amp is "OK" at low volumes, but really opens up when pushed to at least 2 on the Master (The GH100L on 2 was like my old Dual Recto on 5) Happy Hunting!
Speaking of overdrive, I have to commend you for using it properly. People don't realize how nice of a tool it is to boost your guitar signal so it isn't jumping around. The amp then brings it back to life without losing clarity. I'm sold on this head, I pray to god I find a good deal so I can get some other stuff too hehe.
Check out AMT Electronics web site. He has his own signature boost pedal. Trust me I'm an audio engineer I know what I'm talking about. I'm not saying that every rock/metal guitarist uses a boost, but a lot do, especially in a live or studio setting. It helps the guitar sit better in the overall mix.
@ericsteinhauer He does not use a boost live. I have seen him 4 times close up in the last 2 years, Guitar- wah - amp. That's it! The AMT pedal was designed for use at clinics and guitar demoes in Asia where he had to use other amps and of course money is a big part in it as well ;-)
An overdrive pedal doesn't take away low end, it tightens it up so it isn't as flabby. If you listen to any modern metal there is most certainly a boost pedal of some sort on all rhythm and solo parts.
I tried your settings at rehearsal today, I played most of that time with these settings (master around 3, GH50L)), liked a lot. Best thing is that I found use for the SD-1 that had been put aside and almost forgotten. -Aatu
Hello! I would like to buy this amp. How does the boost footswitch work? May I have a good hard rock sound with the distortion of the amp and use the footswitch only to boost the volume of solos? I mean, I know the footswitch is only a drive boost, but I was wondering if it would fit in such a setting. Thank you very much, and, by the way, very nice sound and playing style!
I actually built an isolation box for the cab that allows me to crank amps without blowing out windows haha. Its still fairly loud on five even in the box, but no where near as loud as without it.
Though for recording at the moment I'm quite satisfied with convolution impulse responses taking care of everything after the poweramp... playing with some responses from an oversized Mesa cab. I'm actually starting to prefer it to micing the 4x12. Cool stuff...
I have a VC 50 (no relation to the VC30) and it's a 12x2 internal cab and the same with me, cant get it past 2, even out doors it will make your ears bleed
The cab used was the Tony Iommi Laney cab, which I don't actually recommend. Its wayy to bright and harsh sounding for my tastes. I much perfer my 5150 with V30's. Havn't tried my laney through them (because I sold it for the 5150).
Nice tone there Eric. I also have a GH100L and am curious to know what you did to 'mod' it to have a bit more gain then the GH100TI. Also, nice playing too!
much prefer this to the TS9, i think its a bit more aggresive but this has more high end fizz (in a good way) a tighter bass and a clearer mid range too. i will look into using the SD1, what settings did you use?
Your lame for even posting... Have you listened to any recent metal recordings? Guaranteed 3/4 of those recordings used a boost in front of the amp. It's not to add any gain what so ever, its to tighten up the bass. When cranked, the bass on many high gain amps gets out of control.
Just a pointer to all, type &fmt=18 after the url for youtube videos to get higher quality sound - makes this sound tip fucking top.
Question for eric - just bought myself a GH100L off eBay, it's got EL34's and 5881's in it (no idea what brand, haven't had a look yet) - how big a difference is changing over to 12AX7's and 6L6's going to make on a GH100L? Previous comments imply that it's a pretty monstrous gap between the tubes you have compared to the ones in mine, just wanna hear your opinion
ya . check the "GH100L TS9" video ... sounds a lot warmer , but less agressive . i dig the two tones ... the SD-1 reminding of zakk wylde , and the TS-9 sounding warmer and heavier , reminding more of john 5 tones ...
This was done with junky groovetube gold series 6L6's and some awesome sovtek 12ax7 preamp tubes. Since recording this I've swapped over to using JJ 6L6's and high gain JJ 12ax7's. Definitely recommend the JJ's! The amp sounds much less harsh and alot more full. Not to mention they cost a bunch less then the Groovetubes.
The Pedal isn't to add any more drive it's to tighten the compression in the preamp. Stock the drive is very loose and uncompressed even at high volumes. Alot of amps are like that. Gotta love Laney's though! They cut right through the mix live.
yeah . i want to do the same to tighten the sound of the amp . make it more "modern metal" . oh and yeah , i've just been checking engl amps but nothing to do i just am fond of good ol' laneys ...
Thanks Guys! I would certainly recommend this amp for brutal metal! The Cab I used was the Laney GS412LA which is Tony Iommi's signature cab. I've used other combinations of cabs, but have always gone back to using that cab. For some reason it really compliments how the amp sounds. I'll try and get a dry sample and a sample using a tubescreamer as a boost up this afternoon. I've been liking the tubescreamer over the SD-1 recently.
really wonderful tone there bro, I'm reeeeaally thinking about getting this amp... Would you recommend it for the more brutal metal styles also? Would love to hear you play that tune dry without a boost!
you make it sound like a solid state crate

@Antonis1991CY Thats when you use an EQ pedal to boost the lows.

If you look up his live rig you'll see that he most certainly does use a boost pedal.

If you'd like listen to my video with the 5150 and a boost. There is PLENTY of low end.

Holy shit. This thing must be loud at volume 5, unless you used an attenuator?
I have the GH50L and I can't get it past two before I start worrying about blowing the windows out..

hey man, is there much difference between this amp and the GH100 TI signature?
nice bit of killswitch too ;)
FE7588 3 years ago
This amp was modded to have a little bit more gain then the GH100Ti. Stock it gets pretty close, but the GH100TI has an extra gain stage.

If so, which one? I was looking a the boss ns-2.
Cheers.

Why do this? This amp is a high gain amp. You can get these tones out of the amp its self with out having to overdrive it. LAME! lol

As in an Amp used for bass guitar.... No. For guitar yes, but not with any sort of boost pedal in front of it.

Yeah I am looking for a tube bass amp.I know alot of old 70's bassists used the Laney tube head but I guess it's different.

don't know ... but it has good clean tones ... you must try this head on a bass cab , it won't hurt the head and you'll know ...

does your sound card have a mic preamp? or did you have to buy one extra? if so what preamp was it? if not do you know a good one?
thanks, MIKE

The MBox 2 that I used to record this has a built in pre amp. It's essentially a fire wire sound card for ProTools and Garage Band.

Nadda. The Only thing I did was pan one track 90% left and the other 90% right. Other wise it's a dry signal.

nice tone! I was going to buy a laney either the GHL50 or VH100R, but ended up buying the jsx.
The jsx is a really good amp, but the more i think about the laney seems to have more of that metal edge im looking for. Thanks for the demo!
