Go-bot toys were so much better than Transformers. They were made of metal and actually looked like toy vehicles, instead of just cheap plastic things like Transformers. Too bad Transformers had better marketing and a better cartoon, and therefore became more popular (and, unlike Go-Bots, they came in different sizes, which also helped).

@horkology the Go-bots came in different sizes too. You could actually buy 8 inch versions of Cykill and others. The problem with them is that despite being die-cast, they are pretty badly made, with arms that would lose tension over time, very simple transformation modes, and were easy to break, Scooter especially. Compared to the first generation transformers they just looked bad.

Yeah go bots were a poor mans transformers. But I remembered I wanted one.. Sadly it was the simple marketing they did... it was pretty well targeted even though the toys were just ok.

Only thing I'd say is that the Go-Bot I got was actually a very solid toy, even at that age I still knew that little thick rubber tyres and solid metal in a toy was... different..

Gobots where actually hugely successful on their initial release. However they quickly suffered from poor commercial management and too many large toys.

Having said that Bandai got revenge over Hasbro with the just as massive Power Rangers brand

zog they called it. back in it was a big weapon for the villains (rengades... the shows versions of the decepticons) to use since at the shows start no one combined. Zog was the gobts answer to combiners (however the gobots did get comcbioenr of sorts (Puzzler/Monstrous/Power Warrior suits).
