  • One thing... Hong Kong didn't have its own flag at the time. The flag you showed for China is the flag of the People's Republic of China which didn't exist then. At the time the Qing Dynasty controlled China, their flag was yellow and had a dragon on it. Search for it online.

  • China is a recognized state and a member of the United Nations. Under international law, a successor state, once recognized (as China was recognized by Britain about 1950 and by the United States by 1979) has the right to design its own flag, etc.
