I HAVE A QUESTION ,MY FIANCE HAS A AFRICAN GREY PARROT. SHE HAS NEVER EVER SEEN A SHOWER BEFORE AND SHE PANICS SHE DOES NOT LIKE THE COLOR RED OR BLACK SHE GETS MAD AND BITES. MY QUESTION IS HOW CAN MY FIANCE TEACH HER TO CALM DOWN AND NOT PANIC SO SHE CAN ENJOY A SHOWER ?
@peridotjay40 This is possible through positive reinforcement training. It takes time and patience but it does work. Go to: Good Bird Inc. and read more. Books and DVD's are excellent. Also, read, read, read all you can about parrots. Gaining their trust is essential and Good Bird Inc will show you how. Positive Reinforcement is all about the bird making choices for a positive effect. It is not about making or forcing the bird to do something.
Hello there, I am going to get a talking parrot in a year and i would like to ask some questions because i don't know anything about them: 1.How long do they live? 2.What do you give them to eat? 3.How can you teech him/her to talk? 4.Weight,lenght ... How long does the cage need to be(in centimeters please)? 5.Do you need to shower him/her? 6.How can you pooty train Him/her? I realy wannna get a parrot thet talks :).Please answer and thanks. -LioMushrooms
How did you get her adjusted to showering? I recently got a grey about a week ago and tryed using a spray bottle to simulate rain and so far, he/she (we don't know the gender yet) wasn't a big fan of it
@gaurdianAQ This link may help: theparrotsroost(dot)com/bath-time-and-your-african-grey-parrot/ Just introduce slowly, and gradually lengthen the shower time. Always reinforce with a favorite treat and plenty of positive reinforcement.
@TheRAWRingDuck Parrots are wild animals and will always revert to instinct. Yes, they can be aggressive, however, with proper training, trust, & patience they can be taught not to bite so often. Einstein still bites occasionally, it is usually our fault when she does because we were not paying attention to her body language.
why do you have to give a parrot a bath ? I thought they clean themselves ? Do they have to get treatments for mites or some other kind of parasite ? I am interested in parrots im thinking of purchasing one in the near future and i was wondering if this is part of taking care of them ?
@spiegelsteven It rains a lot in their natural habitat, the forest. Water is good for the feathers. They have a natural dust or powder in their feathers. If they don’t shower, then they have too much dust and the feathers look dull. Showers makes them want to preen, which helps the feathers and overall general health. Showers are a regular part of parrot care. Please do research about parrots before you get one. They do require a good deal of time, money, and patience to care for one.
@4zebird Thanks for the advise i can see that you really take care of Einstien. Your right i will need 2 read up on the care of them 1st . Thats were some people make mistakes they want a pet and dont read up on how much maintinance it takes to properly care 4 them then not having the time the pet suffers from many different problems which could have been avoided if they would have took the time. I hope that U N Einstien and family have a wonderful New Year.
@808scrappah808 We purchased Einstein 14 years ago and prices have changed since then. Also, prices vary depending on where you live. I would contact a parrot rescue in your area and adopt one that already talks! Expect to pay about $800.00 to $1000.00 for a nice big cage. Food and Toys will cost about $50.00 a month. Your mom can tell you about Veterinary care. Avian Vet are more expensive than dog or cat vets because of the specialized training needed.
VERY sorry - I meant Einstein !!!!! (I was just looking at a video of Alex previous to this one and slipped - Einstein is actually prettier than the Alex I saw, according to my way of thinking anyway.)
@apathy24 You're right. In this video she had grown out a few of her flight feathers. Normally, the first 6 flights are clipped right under the coverts
Do you have any recommendations for a first time African Grey owner? I'm considering getting one of these birds. I've watched a lot of your videos and you seem to be very in tune with your bird. Are they hard to take care of? How hard is it to train them? Are they messy? I've read a few books but I want to know from a first hand African Grey owner.
@Rockerismx These birds require an incredible amount of time, patience, energy, and training. All parrots are messy, loud, temperamental, & expensive. They require specialized vet care, and a wholesome fresh organic diet. They can be destructive and they bite. If you have the time to invest they can and do make wonderful pets. Go here for more information: w w w. avianeducationandresourcecenter. org (delete spaces)
@4zebird I agree with everything you say here - except one thing - African Grey parrots are not pets, but companions, or more appropriately, we are companions to them! You know exactly what I mean but the questioner who is a beginner with Greys should know that one cannot have a relationship with a Grey like any other "pet" - ex: can't just leave him alone at home out of his cage, just ignore him when you're tired if he want your attention, etc.!
@rudy7921 You are very correct! They are definitively companions! They depend a great deal on us for both their physical and emotional needs! We think of Einstein as a member of the family and strive to meet those needs.
@charlottevictorias Now is the time to train him to enjoy this activity. Continue to mist him for short periods of time. Increase the duration gradually. Do not force him. If it looks as if he doesn't like it, stop. Chances are he will like it. Make it a fun activity and reward him with a favorite treat.
hey! lovely bird you have :) i've got a cockatiel age around 1 from what his previous owner (my next doorneighbour said) i don't have his wings clipped but my bird doesn't really fly when i let him out he sits by the big mirror singing or kissing his reflection in the mirror or sleeping :). He does fly sometimes but theres a white curtain stopping him from flying into it and the room is wide enough for him to fly up and down =].
@Rakaloe Her wings are clipped. It may sounds cruel to some people, but it really is for her safety. We do take Einstein outside, but only in a travel cage. It would be much crueler for her to fly away and starve to death or be eaten by a predator. The clipping of the wings is not painful to her and she is able to "fly" short distances inside. Having her wings clipped also prevents her from flying into ceiling fans and windows which could also cause great injury or be fatal.
@4zebird Yea, clipping the flight primaries is no big deal... it doesn't hurt them AT ALL and in fact, they get so they don't mind it. At least, my macaws don't seem to be bothered by it. I ask them to "Big Wing!" and they hold their wings up and out, and its very easy to then trim a bit (about 1/2) of the length of the feathers to keep them from literally "taking off"... it's like cutting our hair or trimming our nails. No sensation.
i love your bird. he/she is cute!! hope my bird learns to trust me one day like your one, i've had mine for about a week and half now his a cockatiel lol. bit agressive tries to bite me every chance he gets. still having problems with bathing he doesn't like the spray i think. he liked it once when my mum washed him in the spray but when i tried he didn't like it. im aiming to try letting him in the shower today and put his toy mirror in the shower place and hopefully play and shower same time
everyone should talk to their birds as sweetly and patiently. when they live with us it means they give up soaring in the sky. we should be respectful of their wishes and always kind when they have trouble following our human directives
How very sweet!! :D Now... Our Parrot Zeus, who ive mentioned in previous comments, Is extremely attached to my father while no one else can even touch him. He is now 19 and is only this year starting to let other male members of our household pick him up and interact with him. Is it common for parrots to only bond with one person while seemingly shutting everyone else out?
@Kacipwnsyouall Yes, that's very common. However, by developing trust through positive reinforcement training, other member of the household can form bonds. (perhaps, not as strong, but on another level.
einstein in so cute and i have a litte parrot he talks a litte but he loves watching einstein talk on the computer after seeing einstein he try to say some words enistein said
@kirstyrand1 You let them air dry. They will preen their feathers and will dry naturally. Keep them in a warm area, free from drafts while they are wet.
@Emmerara birds don't even feel it at all when their wings are clipped, so it's not really that sad. It keeps them from flying into dangerous things like ceiling fans or windows. :)

Hi there! I love the videos about yoour Einstein, so cute ;D I just have one question: Is it true that most of African G. parrots only like one family member and like hates or he/she is rude to all the others?
@Rotten45XD That is a myth. They can relate to all family members if you consistently work with them. It takes time and patience. My husband is Einstein's favorite, but I can interact and handle her as well. We also have friends, that Einstein has taken to quite easily. They are all men. She does prefer men over women. Don't know why that is. So happy you enjoy Einstein.
@libbocrates No, we let her drip dry. She will preen and that helps to dry the feathers. In the winter we keep her in a warm room in the house. Free of drafts.
I love Einstein!! I have her on Facebook and Also subscribe to her web page. She is just the one to make me smile!! I always listen and watch at least 2 vids a day. Especially after work...so nice to just, well, Smile!! Thank you Jeff and Marsha for sharing your wonderful and caring family member
@wolfsoul333 Generally speaking, larger parrots are thought to have an intelligence that rivals a 2-3 year old child. While most of their "speech" is just repeating the sounds they hear, if someone spends time with their bird, they can and do understand that certain items are identified by specific words.
So sweet! My sun conure loves taking showers with me--does Einstein ever do that? My bird is so neurotic, he would hate having that "stick" being put in his face
Heh i bet sometimes you forget the fact its a bird with how smart the parrot is, the way it replies and identifies the actual situation with"your all wet" indicating she knows she is having a shower, sooo cool :D
My parents have an Amazon Orangewing that doesn't "talk" (he mimics the general tone of things) and he could go for hours whether or not people were there. He loved the radio and especially the sound of phones dialing lol. Although his one real talent is "screaming", where he mixed the sound of a toy train whistle with the sound of an alarm. He'll go for hours if you don't find a way to shut him up. xD
@4zebird I lost my parrot because i didn't know he was ill :( After i lost him, i have been watching your Einstein and somehow she reminds me my old parrot =/
really interesting!! do you think that if you didn't talk or make noises around Einstein, she would stop talking? Does she only talk when you are there? Does she only talk when she hears phrases you have taught her to learn? love the videos :D always makes me smile!!!
@tulocco If we stopped talking, she would continue to talk. Yes, she talks when we are home. She talks more if we are out of the room. It's called "contact calling". (Parrots do this to know where the other birds are.) Yes, she only knows what she is taught.
@spagettiikid94 Yes, at times she does. For example, like when she says, “Wanna come see you”. She really does want to get picked up. There are many times when I know, she knows what she is saying. When she talks randomly, I think she is just doing what birds like to do, and that’s… make noise. Whether it's chirps or words. I think she is just vocalizing what come naturally - what she has learned.
@spagettiikid94 Birds mostly just imitate, but they can associate words with actions very well. When my african grey Uno wants a certain food, he'll repeat it until I give it to him. He knows peanut, carrot, bread, apple, and broc (broccoli). He says "up" when he wants to be picked up. He'll say "time to go" when we're leaving, and say "hello" when we come back.

What is that metal ring on her leg?

@nicolemtracy It's a leg band and is used as identification of the bird.

WHERE DO U GET PARROTS THAT CAN ACTUALLY SPEAK REALLY GOOD?
acerdude3 9 months ago
@acerdude3 You can't "get" them. You train them and it takes a lot of time, nuturing, and attention. Just like raising a child.
4zebird 9 months ago 3
@4zebird i meant like where do u buy them at and for how much?

Johnnydudeyo 9 months ago
Hi there! I love the videos about yoour Einstein, so cute ;D I just have one question: Is it true that most of African G. parrots only like one family member and like hates or he/she is rude to all the others?
Thank you for your answer!
Rotten45XD 9 months ago
@Rotten45XD That is a myth. They can relate to all family members if you consistently work with them. It takes time and patience. My husband is Einstein's favorite, but I can interact and handle her as well. We also have friends, that Einstein has taken to quite easily. They are all men. She does prefer men over women. Don't know why that is. So happy you enjoy Einstein.

do you dry her after the shower ?
libbocrates 9 months ago
@libbocrates No, we let her drip dry. She will preen and that helps to dry the feathers. In the winter we keep her in a warm room in the house. Free of drafts.

does he understand what you are saying?
wolfsoul333 10 months ago
@wolfsoul333 Generally speaking, larger parrots are thought to have an intelligence that rivals a 2-3 year old child. While most of their "speech" is just repeating the sounds they hear, if someone spends time with their bird, they can and do understand that certain items are identified by specific words.

So sweet! My sun conure loves taking showers with me--does Einstein ever do that? My bird is so neurotic, he would hate having that "stick" being put in his face
batalbj123 11 months ago
Heh i bet sometimes you forget the fact its a bird with how smart the parrot is, the way it replies and identifies the actual situation with"your all wet" indicating she knows she is having a shower, sooo cool :D

My parents have an Amazon Orangewing that doesn't "talk" (he mimics the general tone of things) and he could go for hours whether or not people were there. He loved the radio and especially the sound of phones dialing lol. Although his one real talent is "screaming", where he mixed the sound of a toy train whistle with the sound of an alarm. He'll go for hours if you don't find a way to shut him up. xD

can she tell you if shes sick?
retzykid 1 year ago
@retzykid No, she cannot. In fact it is hard to know if parrots are ill. They hide illness very well.
4zebird 1 year ago
@4zebird I lost my parrot because i didn't know he was ill :( After i lost him, i have been watching your Einstein and somehow she reminds me my old parrot =/
Anderike1994 10 months ago
really interesting!! do you think that if you didn't talk or make noises around Einstein, she would stop talking? Does she only talk when you are there? Does she only talk when she hears phrases you have taught her to learn? love the videos :D always makes me smile!!!
tulocco 1 year ago
@tulocco If we stopped talking, she would continue to talk. Yes, she talks when we are home. She talks more if we are out of the room. It's called "contact calling". (Parrots do this to know where the other birds are.) Yes, she only knows what she is taught.

Kaylacutie19 1 year ago
does einstien actually understand what she's saying?
spagettiikid94 1 year ago
@spagettiikid94 Yes, at times she does. For example, like when she says, “Wanna come see you”. She really does want to get picked up. There are many times when I know, she knows what she is saying. When she talks randomly, I think she is just doing what birds like to do, and that’s… make noise. Whether it's chirps or words. I think she is just vocalizing what come naturally - what she has learned.
4zebird 1 year ago 2
@spagettiikid94 Birds mostly just imitate, but they can associate words with actions very well. When my african grey Uno wants a certain food, he'll repeat it until I give it to him. He knows peanut, carrot, bread, apple, and broc (broccoli). He says "up" when he wants to be picked up. He'll say "time to go" when we're leaving, and say "hello" when we come back.
