  • I live in Springfield, Va and I take the Metro every time i'm going to the city. It's a really fast and clean system, and I love to ride it. The only problems I have is that it can get really expensive at times, so I wish they had a flat rate. Also, it's a pain getting to metro stations from your homes if you don't live close to it. All in all, it's clear that Metro needs to do more, but it's safe to say it's doing its job (second most used public transit in the country).

  • Never buy a DEFECTIVE Toll Brothers house!

  • this metro is very fast.. like in Santiago de Chile

  • Welcome to the nation's capital. On our Metrorail system, there will be NO eating, drinking or spitting. Chew gum only if you are discreet and do not intend to dispose of it on public property. We aim to run an efficient operation.

  • @justinjayhodges shut the fuck up i drink all the time on metro and the pigs dont say shit

  • @Balance301 - Sounds like you're one of those primitive, lowlife douchebags who infest the Metro.....assholes like you who the spineless, dishonest police turn their backs on and ignore when you harrass riders.

Fuck you, you useless shit-for-brains moron!

  • lol the guy with the brown coat in the train at :20 was like, "'sup"

  • not true about the side the doors will open on. There are arrows that show up on the overhead screens next to where the next station is displayed. Also, the side of the tunnel (underground only of course) are on the side that you get off at

  • The DC metro workers are union workers! they are lazy and they are mostly black. They are rude and evil. If you are a non-black passenger they will yell, bitch and complain if you ask them any questions. The trains are dirty and move around like a roller coaster. They shut down entire tracks so you have to waite HOURS to get were you want to.

  • The DC system is much more up to date than the NYC system. NYC recently purchased cars that announce stations via computer, DC has been doing this for years. Even the trains can be operated alone without a train crew. The DC system is no different than the BART system and serves a great purpose. NYC does offer across the platform, but I don't think DC streets are that big to accommodate that arraignment.

  • Whoa shit when i was in DC I was like this is like the future compared to Boston. I like get sentimental thinking about it. You have it so good. and i was like fuck this sentiment, then I realized just because Boston reallysucks, doesn't mean we can't have like Dubai or whatever.

Nevertheless the NYC subway is amazing but the DC metro system is full of hope and optimism and is really really efficient if not a bit pricier than Boston

  • Soooooo......how bout them MBTA huh??? = D

  • Dang, one time I had got thought that if your going to stand on the right side and walk on the left side, I got ran into one time when I forgot to get on the right. People were like "LETS MOVE!!!!!" LOL

  • This reminds me of the R160A

  • You know what? What do you expect from the 2nd largest subway system in the world? On the DART in Dallas? There are only loke 90 miles of track!!! That is not a lot. And it is public transportation! You should be glad with the standards they set thenselves at Metro...... SNAKE BITES YOU!!!!!

  • this is the union station i think i went out to dc for a vacation and loved it

  • come on people, i lived in the dc area for a year and i gotta say i already miss the metro. NY subway is WAAAAY dirtier !! i love dc and the metro ;)

  • i just came back from a trip to dc and on the red line from union station to metro center, the speaker did not work too well and it was rush hour. though then I got on an orange line train, and it was a lot better...

  • i just came from a 2 weeks visit to DC and NY, o my god, the Metro in DC-VA is complex and wide network comparing to the one we have in Toronto, its interesting though the way they charge ppl based on their destination other makin it affordabe and have them pay flat rate' I couldnt love anywhere better than the DC area :( I miss it

  • It"s a lot better than the subway and the DART!!!

  • is that metro center

  • the trains that i ride are clean! i dont know what dc metro you have been on...but they are really nice compared to other public transportation in the US...i like the metro :)

  • Not all the trains are clean. I rode a train from Glenmont station and couple weeks back and it was one of the really old train models (with the orange seats and orange carpet) and everything looked very dingy and dirty. It was nothing like the one this guy boarded (although I have been on some of the newer model trains).

  • The DC Metro is much like the rest of the United States. Transportation and Mass Transit infrastructure has been largely neglected and mismanaged for the past few decades and is in major need of an overhaul. Power and water infrastructure is in even worse condition.

That said, despite it's shortcomings and poor management, the DC Metro is one of the nation's better subway systems.

  • You ungrateful shits if you don't like Metro than stop riding and free up seats for those of us who have NO CHOICE and actually like riding! Metro is far cleaner and safer than comparable systems like Chicago. It is more convenient than smaller systems like BART or LA's Subway. NYC Subway is hardly the shining example of a good system and is far more "antiquated" than the Metro... Metro has problems like any other system but they're not entirely the fault of Metro alone!!!

  • Other than the fact that the trains break down occasionaly (it broke down on me and made me 30 min late for work one day, I was 2 freakin' stops away), the farecard machines take your money, and riding during rush hour is a BITCH, I love the Metro :-)

  • The system is unsafe, its staffed by lazy and incompetent morons, it is underfunded because (like all things DC) of rampant mismanagement and corruption.

God help us if there is ever a terrorist attack in the Metro system - its completely unprepared to deal with an emergency ... hell, it cant even operate well on a daily routine.

  • Im a DC area native and have been riding the Metro since its inception - and I hate the system. It is literally falling apart, a mix of lack of funds and mismanagement/corruption.

Today, June 29 2009 (just a few days after a deadly collision on the system) I got off a train that was ON FIRE - smoke pouring out the back of it - the train just pulled on out of the station - conductor and station manager completely unaware.

  • You're the only one complaining. Get over it and stop crying.

  • Actually, Im not. First of all, 9 dead and over 70 people injured in the recent crash on DC Metro - those folks and their families I assure you are disgusted with DC Metro, so no bjb91, Im NOT the 'only one complaining.'

The mismanagement of funds, corruption with, and incompetence of DC Metro has been well documented in recent years.

  • metro has nice trains

  • I've ridden on one of these. it's pretty fun

  • i agree with the kirby dude when i was in d.c. th trains always said what station it was and even during rush hour there were trains every like 5 minutes or even less and compared to a lot of others its cleaner and more efficient

  • dude come on go to mumbai boston chicago and u will be like oh snap the dc metro is better

  • You're crazy. I love the DC Metro. It's so clean smooth, and efficient.

  • Metro may not have redecorated some of the older cars, but those cars are only 1970's vintage, NYC has been in operation for FAR LONGER and I have no doubt you'll find plenty of older cars than 70's on their system. Metro is not perfect, but it is CLEAN (relatively speaking), fast and reliable. It is the most modern system in the US, when you compare all things equally--so don't bitch about Metro!

  • What are you people, nuts? We were in DC for the Inaugural and the system carried almost a million people with nary a hitch. The only holdup was getting through the turnstiles, but once we were in, the trains were running every 30 seconds.

I live in Boston and spent 20 years riding the "T". Truly, the worst subway in the US, if not the world. I drive now, it's not worth the headache.

  • There'sm also another old and antiquated System not mentioned here, Boston's MBTA, only modern rolling stock on MBTA they got are the 0700-series by Siemens on the Blue Line, the 3800-series Breda Type 8 Trolleys and over in the Red Line Department, they got the 1993/94 Bombardier 01800-series cars. But Metro is far better and modern and advanced

  • yeah i forgot about that to

  • go back to hong kong if you're gonna keep bitching

  • talking to me

  • no, the video poster

  • i know right they are other systems worser but he shoud go to mumbai then he would say dc metro is better

  • I do.... all the time too!

  • @snaketits1 "If you don't like X, then leave!" is a horrible argument. You could use that against ANYONE with ANY complaint about ANYTHING. It's kind of pointless because it shifts the focus to the character of the person complaining, rather than the actual PROBLEM.

  • @jeffsandychelsea If you don't like my comment then fuck off! And where exactly in this mundane video of a train pulling up to a station, is there a "PROBLEM" represented?

  • have u ever rode on a caf 5000 or 6000 series therebrand new not antique or old

  • "The inside of the trains are old, antiquidated, dirty, and many are in need of repair."

Have you been to New York?

  • except the r142a and r160a there new

  • What's wirh all of your stupid fucking complaints about the system? I'll take the DC metro over San Francisco or even New York's system any day of the week

  • yea d.c. is screwing up, but I think the money is coming. Cities like D.C. are trying to make a name for themselves nowadays. Hopefully the money thru the slots in Maryland will bring more money to the Metro.

  • The poster is a stuck up elitist ass

  • The posting about the DC metro being antiquated has not been on other subway systems. The DC metro though not perfect is cleaner than many systems and has a better on time rate. BART in the SF Bay Area is far less advanced than the DC system and is easily the most expensive in the country and has the rudest riders in the U.S. - I have been hit numerous times in the head with bags, elbows, etc. I have had that happen to me in NY but it is always followed up with an apology.

  • One point I try to make, but didn't really post about is, that despite the DC metro being one of the best and most modern in the nation, it is junk compared to many systems in Asia. Having rode metros and trains in Asia, Europe and North America, most of the metros we have in the US are junk. I just came back from Chicago.. OMG.. what a screw up the green line trainss. Doors open INWARD INTO the cabin. What a screw up!

  • @ironqqq Well with the massive amount of people in asia they better have a better transit system, D.C. is actually a small city/district and with a much lower population than other cities, I ride the D.C. metro everyday and find it a smooth and enjoyable ride, people complain so much but it is the best in the country. I hear all the time on the news "OMG the escalator broke down" im just like get you fat ass up and walk or take the damn elevator...

  • @jaimedemexico I agree with the poster. The DC Metro looks like it's efficient, but it's also falling apart. Listening to the list of broken escalators was almost comical. If you want to see a nice Metro visit Cleveland, Boston, or Montreal. There are also many grade separated light-rail systems that are much better. St Louis, Minneapolis, Portland and Denver are all much better than DC Metro. If DC put some money into maintenance, I think it'd be a completely different story.

  • Ahhhh...the metro...my main form of transportation for a few years. Gotta love it.

  • heres the thing. The dc metro is better than 95 % of all the other subway systems besides ny. I just moved down south and there is a metro system but it sucks. I think there are 3 or 4 stations in the whole city. The line only goes downtown, it does not extend into the suburbs. I didn't realized how lucky i was until i moved to this second rate city. BTW I used the dunn loring and vienna stations. Orange line baby

  • l'enfant square, metro center, gallery place, and all the other cross stations are the nicest. a smarttrip card is a great investment!

  • I completely agree with your comments. The metro is confusing as hell, and the operators speak so softly that you can no idea station you're at! Sometimes they don't even saying anything! There are hardly any maps in the trains, or on the platforms. I lived in Beijing and had a much easier time navigating their system, even with the language barrier, just because they actually have maps everywhere and an automated station announcement system.

  • One of the most cleanest and effective subway system in the country.

  • I've found the subway to be quite clean in comparison to others that I've used throughout the US and even Canada. It's public transportation. You can't really expect too much.

I've always found I could hear the operators just fine. Actually it was in NYC where I had issue hearing the operators.

Overall, I've been riding DC subway for years and much prefer it to others.

  • that's a shame. It's attitudes like that toward cleanliness tghat will keep public transportation at a mediocre level that it is in the States. I have been to countries where public transportation is spotless and highly profitable and highly respected by the people.

  • I agree. ironqqq if you think DC is bad. you should come to NYC even NJ Transit. DC stations are a lot more cleaner and organized. For example DC stations have AC i dont know any NY stations that have that and I can't tell you the last time I have seen a rat in a DC subway.

  • try chicago subway there like nyc

  • As for the state of the trains, you got into the newer, more modern train and at 33 seconds in your video, if you look at the ceiling of the train on the left, you can see the little screen that says "Green" on it. That screen changes to tell you which station you're going to next. Not to mention, they provide you with windows that are plenty big to see what station you're going to even if you are in an older train.

  • Line changes CAN be platform changes. Like the green and yellow lines and the orange and blue lines...L'Enfant is accessible to green and yellow at the top. You got on a green line train (towards Greenbelt it looks like) in this video.

I think both Sprint and Verizon offer reception at this time underground.

  • I agree with wr70beh...

For someone who has spent most of their life riding Metro I will be the first to tell you that it is probably the most cleanest and efficient subway system in the nation.....sure they have gotten old (not as old as NYC Subway) but overall, still a great transit system.....all they need to do is continue to update their old equipment and lower their fares!

  • Oh yeah no doubt about it. Granted the red line has gone to hell since the accident, but even still, it's faster than trying to drive or take a bus most of the time. It's MUCH cheaper than taking a cab. The cars are clean, even if the carpet does stink sometimes, the service is more reliable than many other systems. No major complaints here, but I'm lucky that my most frequented line is the Green/Yellow which is newest, so I see less disruption than people who use the Blue/Orange and Red.

  • I my main lines were the Orange and Blue lines, which have had their share of problems, but like you said, its better than having to drive.

  • You must have rode the Metro on a bad day.. for the most part, the system is clean and relatively efficient. Probably the best in the nation.

  • this is not the first time I have ridden the metro in DC. I have a been to DC a couple times. in a previous trip, I stayed in DC a week solid and rode the metro everyday. The DC metro is undoubtedly a good system in the US if not the best, but abroad, it is a second rate system.

  • I posted a reply video illustrating how crap the DC metro is comparatively on a world stage. Take the Hong Kong MTR. Opened in 1979, 3 years after the DC metro. It's only 3 years difference, but in this video you will see it is light years ahead.

DC Metro, best in the country, but still pretty crappy on the world stage. The designers just weren't thinking.

  • Oh it is by FAR the best system in the nation. Chicago is roughly the same size, but the trains run slower, less frequently and the tracks are in worse shape than ours. BART in San Fran has good service, but doesn't go anywhere and runs only until 11 weekdays and midnight on weekends--pathetic! LA is rising in quality but the service is too varied between heavy and light rail, few easy transfers in their system. Philly sucks ass! NYC is dirty but not too bad otherwise, has best coverage.

  • New York City Subways are even older and more antiquated. In short, most subways/metros in America are in major need of an upgrade / modernizing.

  • Ours are overall in pretty good shape, even the oldest are only 30 years old, which isn't bad as subway systems go worldwide. NYC has a lot of new ones, the problem is that they put the lighting BEHIND the advertising panels so the light shines through them, causing the trains to look dingy, yellowish, and older than they actually are... I love this new LED lighting in the DC Metro cars and I hope it makes its way in our cars.

  • Were the original bredas in the front in advertisement wrap?

  • yeap. its kinda hard to tell what they're advertising.

  • I was on the metro just on Wednesday. On the first train I was on, I had this guy operating.

  • I believe so.

  • That looked like a nice train though! Interior LED display and bright overhead lighting.
