  • All about the music and cut speed!

  • Despite the few flaws found in the video. It still establishes the importance of pacing. Thank you.

She actually put it in park. LOL

  • Thats some good stuff

  • Well, when we wanna show the action, we speed up. For romantic scenes, this kind of editing is awful.

  • @90zlaya Yes, that is indeed what the video shows...

  • did the chick actually shift gears on an automatic... into PARKING? HILLARIOUS!

  • did the chick actually shift gears on an automatic? HILLARIOUS!

  • romantic scene 1 looks like speed dating

  • Thanks.

  • Eww Zooming! really?

  • The fast romantic scene was so intense! Seems like a horror or something

  • Thank you. Well demonstrated. Will heed.

  • I love the first version of the romantic scene.

  • Good job on this.

  • did she just put the gear on park?

  • It seems fast cutting has become popular in action movie's over the last decade particularly. I find it annoying and nauseating and completely unnatural. It doesn't compare to older film's such as Aliens with less cutting and more tracking shot's and better pacing. Like all thing's people in the movie industry seem to jump on the bandwagon. Sorry just my opinion. But the uploaded video was good and served it's purpose :)

  • bmw 8 series ftw!

  • Thank You!!!1

  • The love scene looks like one taken from Twilight.

    thumbs up if you agree

  • great job, this tut means a lot to me, Thanks! ;)

  • hahahaha the fast romantic scene looks like it would be in Shaun of the Dead lol:) Great tut by the way:D

  • Nice camera angles :)

  • nice shots, what kind of dolly did you use for the wheel angle?

  • @Holy1Smokes hand held out the side of a van.

  • Aww poor guy. :-(

  • great stuff, thanks!

  • HAHA i laughed the whole time that romantic scene was goin on

  • thanks for posting I like it, interesting

  • did she say yes or no?...

  • great tutorial but the romantic scene was still a little fast

  • @8888Eastman To each his own! Thanks for watching

  • @8888Eastman agreed

  • jajajajajajajaja.... this video is make me laugh

  • Wait how do you even have a car chase?do you have to real have a chase and get put in jail?

  • @Ayisiens I have no idea what you are asking me. not all movies have a car chase...

  • @sonnyboo I believe he was asking how did you close a street to do your 30 mph chase scene. and not get in any trouble.

  • @chrisw443 There are no permits required for filming in Ohio. Great reason to shoot here.

  • @Ayisiens No you don't have a real one, they just film different angles and speed up the film and do fast angles so they appear to be having a fast pace chace but from the first scene you can see that its just a normal speed they just increase the speed of the film to look like they're going fast

  • @Sackandjam actually, none of the shots are sped up.It's all in the editing (which includes the music and sound design).

  • @sonnyboo So you're saying you actually sped a car down those roads? And by editting do you mean making them 'seem' faster?

  • @Sackandjam By cutting from one shot to another, we made it seem like the car was moving faster. We never went faster than 30 Miles Per Hour on those streets. We got the insert shot of the speedometer going 70 while on the highway at the end of the shoot.

  • @sonnyboo Oh it just seems that in some shots like 1:02 the police car is going much faster than normal speed so i thought you'd sped the video up to mak it look like he was going faster

  • @Sackandjam

did u speed up the shots in FCP, and put effects on it such as jitter and flashes etc?

  • Epicest romantic scene EVER!!!

  • LOL--SHE GAVE THE RING BACK. HA HA

  • What you said is spot-on, although music also plays an important part in it to I believe, it helps set the mood of the scene

  • @TimSpeelman You make no sense. If one guy runs one hundred meter in 9 seconds and the guy running 2 hundred meters runs 200 in 9 seconds, I'd say the second guy is faster.

  • fabulous video.. posted on my entertainment channel where I post movies all the time :) idea girl consulting

  • nice concept

  • any one can help, how its done the 2 or more cameras used in one thot live,,, is there a interface or what,,, i got a wedding to do but i just got another camera now. i want to use 1 camera on tripods from above just to live it there and my ather one i will control that,,, is there i way that i can connect the ather one to my camera or is it just done on the video editing, and that woud take alot to fing the right segment on bothe cameras... thnx i hope some one who knows can help!!!

  • i like how the driver shifts like its manual transmission...

actually just setting "P" at the automatic transmission hehe

    interesting video ;)

  • haha fat guy

  • LMAO but i actually quite liked the fast cut romantic scene!! =D it's as if it's kinda a dramatic romantic chase scene or w/e you wanna call it xD.

love the video! =D great tips

  • that second shot was sick too bad that lady drives like a granny.. jk!

  • if you only have 1 camera, do you have to record each segment seperatley, or is it impossible/

  • @aplussstudent3 with 1 camera, you can only shoot one segment at a time.

  • @aplussstudent3

i dont want to be disrespectfull but how in the world would you expect one camera to record different shots in one time?

  • Music certainly influences the viewer's interpretation as well...

  • @BlacKatProductionz I agree, music is a key component in getting the right mood for a video, I believe the tutorial would be more accurate if the music was just taken out all together as this is showing how cutting changes the mood, rather than music.

  • i'm interested in one thing..

how can i cut fast without cutting audio?

  • @geodati cutting means editing picture and/or sound and music....

  • take audio from one shoot dub it over the sequencce

  • Man! That fast romantic dinner scene felt like they it was expressing the anxiety that comes when a guy tries proposing to a girl. Thats the vibe I got from it, though it was merely an example of the wrong kind of editing for the desired moodwhich was romance.

  • @TimSpeelman as has already been stated, music is a part of the editing process, which is what this video is demonstrating. As for the fairness, can you point me to the people in charge of making such decisions? A referee or board of regents?

  • @sunamer Actually it's rare if an editor doesn't add what is known as "temp music" on their first cut. Video or better known as "picture cut" may or may not be more important. That is a very subjective statement, not an objective fact.

Music is not always custom written for a movie, sometimes it is pre-recorded and selected, like when someone uses a popular song in their movie/TV show/commercial. Sometimes the edit is done TO the music, as is always the case in a music video's picture edit.

  • these are tips fuckers settle down

  • @dvaifilmsdotcom amen.

  • Hey man is it possible for someone to use a film camera only for dialog scenes and a digital camera only for action scenes?

  • @William82oct I don't see why not...

  • what would be interesting would be to use the fast paced cutting for the romantic scene to create a sort of tension in the narrative.

  • @mwells219 That's actually in the video as the first demonstration of the romantic scene.

  • @sunamer Usually, the director supervises the edit and most aspects of making a movie including CGI, etc.

An editor (on bigger movies, a sound editor, but in most cases the picture editor as well) adds the music, so that is a part of editing.

So no stars on your comment.

  • Makes no sense at all!

Scene 1 version 1: A still shot, cars passing at snail pace. No music

Scene 1 version 2: Fast cut of several shots (using filmtechniques for the action genre). Action music

Scene 2 version 1: Dinnerscene, several shots. Thriller music

Scene 2 version 2: Same shots but longer. Romantic music

Your trying to show us the difference between slow and fast cutting.

You are showing us the difference between different types of music. Plus using different filmtechniques.

  • I guess I can say that, the editorial choice of music is still a part of editing. I think that the editorial pacing of the shots in both scenes is equally varied in their pace, which means the demonstration is valid.

  • I understand and agree to an extent, but for teaching purposes i think the video demonstrated and explained the importance between fast and slow cuts well, even though music/sound effects were added. (they were used to emphasize the lesson).

  • @TeseProductions Exactly.

  • i have watched many different film school shows and no of them have even touched on this very important concept.

  • at 1:54 the girl looks like shes holding in a fart, LOL! and at 2;09 and 2:10 after opening the little white gift box, she looks as though she received a small piece of turd. (Shit, for our foreign viewers). There was no romance in this scene what so ever.

  • I don't think the focus of this video is on the "romance"...it's probably on the technique used, hence the title "moviemaking technique". If you thought it was a romance video, then I apologize for your incompetence.

  • Did she say no? ;)

Amazing video mate, really helped me out!

  • lolz...!!!

    good 1

  • I like fast cutting

  • lol @ the romantic scene using fast cutting.

It's like the guy's trying to kill the girl. lol

  • VERY HELPING!!!!!!

  • nice tip..really helpfull

  • now watch SEM DESTINO you will see the good angles

  • No bad

  • wat is the song at the good car chase?

  • just something I threw together for the vid

  • ok thanks

  • ha ha ha she turned him down he wasn't rich enough. No poontang for that dude. Eternal jerking for you my friend...

  • usuallyt people say things that really only apply to themselves

    sorry buddy..

  • luh mao!

  • said she "no"?

  • 2:00 i dont think is a very good shot

  • okay.... Not sure what the relevance is, but it's a profile shot. The video is about EDITING, and not CINEMATOGRAPHY.

  • dude thats crazy that you said that, i was just thinking that exact same thing, i even looked at the time that the shot was! i was just too lazy to make a comment, haha weird

  • Watch a movie with-out sound and analyse the shots.

Then watch the same movie with sound and you will see how important sound is.

But also don't forget, if you have a great story you don't necessarily need to have huge battles and chases to make it entertaining.

A simple tense dialogue scene can make up for it.

Having a great screenplay is often overlooked.

Editing is also using the movement of the frame to connect to the next, making it watchable.

Watch Jaws, it's the best example of this.

  • what you said was correct- but you also added music. that added a greater emotional impact than even the cutting.

also the car scene (1) was too long- I almost turned you off...

  • lol that was hilarious, the one shot car chase hahahaha

  • great video. Went all out with the chase scene! Editing is allot more complicated than what most aspiring filmmakers believe.

  • This may be true to an experienced filmmaker, but to beginners, unfortunately the term editing is misunderstood (understandable so) as just meaning the cutting of the shots.

As the demo states, it's about 'fast and slow cutting', and that's all it does mention, no talk of sound.

But, it's the sound that triggers the audiences preconceived audio stereotypes/sound associations and causes them to believe one versions is right and one wrong, but they go away thinking it's the speed of the cuts.

  • these examples are kind of true but the use of music and sound effects seems to be more the reason why these's scenes do or don;t work, not the speed of the editing, but he doesn't mention anything about music/sound.

  • I think the "pacing" which is what the fast & slow cutting is referring to encompasses sound & picture editing. Faster "cutting", which includes sound as well as picture, are a part of why these work.

  • ..... isn't this kinda common knowledge if you're editing films?? Maybe he should've also let people know that MUSIC plays a HUGE role in setting the mood and tempo.

  • ...and yet I see more and more movies from people aspiring to be filmmakers who have no clue about this.

    Hence the video.

  • You know why mistakes are made when cutting and making tempo? Some filmakers overlook tempo and cutting beacause they don't have their scene thought out and just film the scene in as few takes as they can, changing the angle each time. The material in this video is not generally thought about by filmakers and this could help them. I know a bit about film but this is a great help, for aspiring filmakers and even me.

  • Obviously you've yet to view any recent Hollywood fight sequences.

  • Why? Are they suddenly not cutting them fast? Sorry, but the most current action scenes are cut faster than ever.

  • My comment was actually directed at EpicStunt.

As for current action scenes, fast cutting is the problem. They're cut so damn fast with some many angles machine gunned at you that you can't even tell what's going on anymore. The fact that the camera work is shaky as hell and closeups are used for way too many shots is just salt in the wound.

Before shooting a fight scene, one should always sit down and watch "Fist of Fury" and "Way of the Dragon" for inspiration and limited guidance.

  • Even THE WILD BUNCH used a lot of cuts, whip pans, and pop zooms to accentuate the intensity of the action scenes and that was from 1969 (editor:Lou Lombardo)

  • There's a fine line between accentuating the intensity of an action scene and ruining it completely by not allowing the audience to see what's happening.

  • Oh man, I totally agree. You watch like The Borne Ultimatum and you're like... "WTF? The lead character just died... wait... Who just got thrown?"

If directors are going to spend that much on fight rehearsals, martial arts training, stunt performers, fight doubles, fight coordinators and stunt coordinators you'd think they'd at least let you watch the finished product.

  • So true. I recently watched a making of of a small fighting scene from The Bourne Supremacy. They rehearsed it like a day or so and ending up cutting the scene down to about 3 seconds. The editing was really really bad, because of all the details you couldn't even see because of the wide angle shot. And the funny thing about this, is that it looked a million times better on the behind-the-scenes-camera. :D

  • @AdamSwaluk Yeah! Quantum of Solace comes to mind.

  • There is nothing that I didn't now and I never even went to film school. Editing for me is the most important aspect of the filmmaking process. its all about Tempo, cuting all the time with the your viewer in mind, and come on we see it everyday when we go to the cinema. It doesn't take a genius.

  • And surprisingly, many "filmmakers" don't have a clue and apparently aren't genius'. This video wasn't made for you, so I'm not sure why your responding like I'm insulting your intelligence.

  • Great video, one problem, along with editing pace they have also changed the music and sound design, which will also change alot in a movie! So try switching the music and sd/fx and see how it plays out. Sometimes the faster pace cutting and slower music can really tense things up like in the example of the romantic scene, the man could just be really nervous and a faster pace of cutting could visually tell that, give it a try!

  • I consider editing in the sound FX, seound design, and music to still be a part of "editing" and the pace, so the original video stands.

  • cool

    very helpful

  • excellent got to the point quickly just like filmmakers

  • Wow, talk about "Short & Sweet"! You effectively make your point in a concise manner, using the tools of the trade. Great stuff!

  • Interesting, useful advice for budding editors.

  • hey this is a great video personally i think it is the sound which plays the main role of getting the audience in the mood

  • Music, editing, acting, camera angles... they all equally work to set the audiences mood.

  • the romantic scene does work with fast cutting but you put this crazy fast music and sound effect for every movement that the viewer does not even notice. ladies and gents, you can turn the crappiest video ever into the most amazing piece of art by correct sound and music option.

  • I really don't believe a crappy scene can suddenly be good just by adding music & sound design...

  • One thing I know, the major Hollywood projects and blockbuster films would not have been so popular if sound design was taken into second place. A simple bad quality shaken amateur video of kiss with the correct music is undeniably a work of inspiration.

  • Not really true... you can watch virtually every Michael bay movie with kick ass sound & the are NOT works of inspiration.

  • hey just wanted to say that these videos are really great, they're educating and they're interesting to watch as advice!

  • hey just wanted to say that these videos are really great, they're educating and they're interesting to watch as advice!

  • for the first car scene, where did you place the camera?

  • It's on a crane arm over the street from the sidewalk. It's the same shot, only not moving as the final shot of the "fast" version.

  • which crane?

  • Glidecam Crane 200.

  • good educational vid, for people wanting to see another example of action-style cutting you could take a look at my vid Speed (the widescreen version, the other one's crap)

Sonnyboo, can u take a look and tell me if i can video response it ?

  • THe seceound one you didnt cut it any slower that it was the first time the only diffrence what the tence music, that had nothing to do with cutting.

  • Yes it was. Each shot was more than double the length in time.

  • yea it was way slower

  • Yes, the editing is important, but the music is equally or even more important. In the two scenes, they used different music to either lighten the scene, make it seem tense, etc.

  • Yes those are additional tools you use in editing to enhance the emotion of a scene. The sound design was also key, as in none of what was there was recorded during the shoot. They are all demonstrative of the effects of EDITING on the viewer.

  • I like you're video. I already know this, but it's good for when I want to help teach others. However I have to agree about the editing. Personally I would have kept the music and sound design out of these examples to really show how editing alone can create tension or slow down the pace, and perhaps leave sound/music for another scene. But it's good anyways.

  • i like this guy's idea , he's good at this , hey can you teach me please !

  • lol romantic wooshes

  • sweet!
