This song was based upon a song called I Lie in The American Land written by my great Andrew E. Kovaly from McKeesport, PA in the early 1900's. Pete Seeger visited our family to research this song and get permission from my grandfather to record it. Bruce never gave any credit to my great grandfather for the song, which is unfortunate. Nonetheless, it's a great song.
i've seen bruce 7 times now, my dad upwards of 30 shows! obviously i was raised in a house of bruce lovers! i have a deep respect for this song, and the lyircs...
THE BOSS! I love this song, I went to one of hi concerts once, want to go again!!! He also sang this song at the concert! B.t.w. this is with the E-Street Band.
Magnifcent song, when he played it at Glastonbury on Saturday I was on top of my bed doing 'the barnyard dance' or that's what my girlfriend said it was! Saw him last year at Old Trafford, would love to see him in US in the near future.
I just saw Bruce Springsteen in finland tampere. was just MIND BLOWING! he played this song there, shit it was like megadoze of adrenaline :D it was awesome.
seeing this song live in giants stadium a few months back was absolutely fantastic. the whole stadium was dancing jigs and the like. it was quite a sight to see

My grandfather's oldest brother emigrated, and I know my family there. So this song means a lot to me! Thanks, Bruce!

My great-great grandfather was a Finnish immigrant who went to America. Nobody knows what happened to him there. Maybe I have relatives there:)

Awesome! Bruce has a real sense of tradition and culture. Seeger Sessions aren't my favorite, but this song is really fun!

there is a bit of this song that reminds me of "yo-ho, yo-ho, a pirate's live for me" from potc (such as in: 0:50)
(i'm just saying that it reminds me of that, nothing more, i love this song and the boss!!!)
