The first goal scored by scotland was the result of the mistakes made by Shengelia and then Chivadze. Then both of them scored themselves. That was an unforgettable match for them and for all Dinamo Tbilisi fans. There was another Georgian on the pitch - Tengiz Sulakvelidze. Vitaly Darasselia was also in the squad, but he didn't play in that game.
The USSR player Sergei Baltacha was my PE teacher at school. I work with him now doing some football coaching at my college. When you see him play now he is still quality.
In fact, out of all goal scorers for USSR in 82, only one was an ethnic Russian:Gavrilov who scored the 1st goal v New Zealand. Bal who scored vs. Brazil was a Hungarian fm Ukraine, Blokhin was Ukrainian, Baltacha was Hutsul (Carpatho-Ruthenian with some Romanian ancestry, also fm UKR), Chivadze and Shengelia were Georgians (they had won the Cup WinnersCup that year with Dinamo Tbilisi) and Khoren Oganesyan who scored v.Belgium was an Armenian.
The final in 82 between Barcelona and Liege (I'm not sure of the spelling) is quite famous because the spanish player Quini started playing with the ball near the corner point to provoque a belgian player. In the same stadium, there was also Poland - USSR in that same world cup in a politically charged match. Some polish players started taking the ball and they were going towards that corner point which was symbolical.
I don't think Smolarek (which famously did what you said in Poland vs USSR) thought abt Quini or any symbolism. I remember a report on TV Polonia (the Polish international channel) last year where Boniek said that the guideline given from Polish FA (on a tight rope in martial-law Poland) was "try to draw, but not win against USSR. The first goal scored by scotland was the result of the mistakes made by Shengelia and then Chivadze. Then both of them scored themselves. That was an unforgettable match for them and for all Dinamo Tbilisi fans. There was another Georgian on the pitch - Tengiz Sulakvelidze. Vitaly Darasselia was also in the squad, but he didn't play in that game.

In fact, out of all goal scorers for USSR in 82, only one was an ethnic Russian:Gavrilov who scored the 1st goal v New Zealand. Bal who scored vs. Brazil was a Hungarian fm Ukraine, Blokhin was Ukrainian, Baltacha was Hutsul (Carpatho-Ruthenian with some Romanian ancestry, also fm UKR), Chivadze and Shengelia were Georgians (they had won the Cup WinnersCup that year with Dinamo Tbilisi) and Khoren Oganesyan who scored v.Belgium was an Armenian.

The final in 82 between Barcelona and Liege (I'm not sure of the spelling) is quite famous because the spanish player Quini started playing with the ball near the corner point to provoque a belgian player. In the same stadium, there was also Poland - USSR in that same world cup in a politically charged match. Some polish players started taking the ball and they were going towards that corner point which was symbolical.

I don't think Smolarek (which famously did what you said in Poland vs USSR) thought abt Quini or any symbolism. I remember a report on TV Polonia (the Polish international channel) last year where Boniek said that the guideline given from Polish FA (on a tight rope in martial-law Poland) was "try to draw, but not win against USSR. Better not to score. 0-0 is best". That meant going to the semis without defeating the Soviets. So I think that's what Smolarek had in mind.

Do you remember the match CCCP - Colombia at WC Chile '62? That match was a incredible comeback... Colombia was down 4-1 on the score at the end they managed to scored another 3 goals, and the match eventually finished in a tie... Don't forgot, that CCCP team was the current European Champion.

What I've read is that that "goal" by Geoff Hurst took the wind out of the Germans' sails and that's how the English were able to finish that match off. Whatever. As I stated above, I don't think that third "goal" really was one but I'm not shedding any tears for the Germans. I'm ALWAYS happy when the German team loses. ALWAYS. ESPECIALLY when it knocks 'em out of major tournaments. So the fact they got beat with a disputed goal doesn't bother me in the least. F*ckers.
