Theory isn't suppose to be all that fun.Just like anything else its a learning curve. If you are serious about making music your job then theory will be very helpful. But just like a great writer doesn't have to have the best grammar in the world to write a good book,a musician doesn't have to master theory. But it makes it a whole lot easier to express what you have in the noggin and communicate with other players.
i'm curious about theory which is why i clicked on it but honestly. this is the stuff that made me quit guitar twice. It's just not fun. i started up two years ago and ignored this stuff and it's been much more enjoyable. i 'm not closing my mind it's just that 20 seconds in literally caught myself daydreaming. I still favorited it though cause i'm gonna try.
Well I've been playing guitar for 2 yrs now and still can't relate to notes. But I'm currently in orchestra which has taught me basic patterns of keys and stuff so I just need more knowldge on te guitar. I play the cello for 5 yrs btw
What if your stupid, or slow like me.I have to have someone tell me and show it to me over and over. Then if i don't do it the next day I forget.I have played professionel and semi-pro for 30 years.but with other players who show what to do.I want to learn everything but it is hard for me to remember what I am taught.I can really play good, if not great at times but i could [and should be] a wiz by now. What should I do? Over the past two years i have played each day for six hours a day
I've been playing guitar for a year and a half now and I've realised how arrogant I've become. You can't become a good guitar player unless you know something about music theory.
Excellent video! I don't read music on the guitar. I did a little on piano. Can I learn music theory if I don't read music? Fantastic video! Thank you!
@MrAlfredocolon if you know who tom hess is he teaches you to stay on track. [ ill give you this link in a min ] before yo go tell me or private mesage me and i tell you some helpful. realy do this
@MrAlfredocolon I have the same problem with guitar and piano. I just play it instead (and good I might add but stuff I already know.) It sure is a huge handicap not knowing the theory of music.
Must I memorize the notes for all of them? I realize that the notes in dropped c are 2 frets lower in dropped d, but it's hard to figure out where they are with that pattern quickly.
I think esoremada's original drop C was correct as CGCFAD. I've never seen CADGBE as a tuning but it might be done. But it's certainly not what people call drop C.
i play guitar for 4 years now...and i didnt even learn music theory at all...i just learn from tabs and watch videos from youtube...but this might help
Can you improvise and or make up your own easily, can you put down what's in your head and apply it to the guitar, like think of a tune, and know where the notes are? I strongly recommend learning theory.
you can still play music by how the feel of the song is rather than technical stuff even if you do learn music theory. Music theory simply helps you write music faster, so you can finish writing a song that you feel sounds great faster before you forget it or something like that.
i think music theory is all good but i dont like it that it makes people think to techincal rather than what they think sounds gd and what they enjoy rather than thinking ah thats that note so that means i can play this or this just feel music i prefer but im learning theory as well :)
It's not crucial, I've been playing guitar since I was 8 or so and have a natural understanding of the correlation of certain notes together. In saying that I would say it saves time experimenting blindly with different chord progressions to achieve the mood you're going for. I don't think it's ever a bad thing to know some music theory but I wouldn't press the need to study it to enjoy guitar :)
Well actually that isn't quite accurate... You see, you need to know your chord shapes and scales in order to be any good on the guitar. And just the fact that you know these, means you are using music theory. Weather you know it or not is another story all together.
I agree with you, I dont think I need music theory either. Chuck Schuldiner (DEATH) Didnt know squat about music theory yet he created Death Metal and wrote some amaizing solos and songs. BC Rich guitars even make a tribiute guitar for him because he was very influential as a guitarist. Anyway, I just know the basics of theory, triads, tonalities, scales...but the rest is boring lol.
great words by frank gambale "why would you not understand english? it's the same with guitar it's the language of the instrument" this guy pretty much took that from a jazz god

I used to think like that when I first started playing but as time went on I knew something was lacking and now that I'm learning theory I don;t feel that way anymore and I am a better musician now
I'm a drummer, and even I have a basic knowledge of music theory. It's all about communication, in order to be the most efficient musician possible (and creative), music theory is incredibly important.
