your reviewing this game like its a totally new IP, the point of this game is to make a freeware version of quake, it's built on the same engine,so ofcource the graphics are like this. Based on that and for it's time, the graphics are great, fast, reliable and old school. Subjectivity aside. Not a bad review, just be more informed next time, however old this video is.
OMFG. Does anyone know any linux fps's where you DON'T run ridiculously fast?
For example, nexuis sucks. The running speed makes it impossible and seizure inducing. Call me what you will, but I'd like to see a game with some level of realism.
@Jenkinsororo I agree with you. All these F2P shooters for Linux is all ridiculously fast. The only ones that I know where it is medium paced gameplay is: Urban Terror, Assault Cube, and maybe Alien Arena. Other than that. Sadly, I could not find any good medium paced tactical shooters for Linux. But hey, I am responding a question that is 4 months ago. So you probably know a good FPS game for Linux by now. If you know a good FPS game, tell me.
@AltTabReviews the game is 304Mb and is taking like 5 10 mins usally 1 gig takes like 10 mins whatever lol nice review and what would be the point in getting qauke if theres this
its practicly alien arena because they both use the quake engine. the only difference is it has more characters witch doest realy matter, because like they said you never really notice who your shooting at you just do and yes its multyplayer
Just started playing OpenArena on my netbook, and just today stuck it on my desktop, up next to Nexuiz, and the various Valve shooters I have... I definitely think it holds it's own.
dude, it pretty obvious and its not like the makers are bragging about how awesome it is, the games purpose it to give people a free version of quake that has same physics and gameplay, but without breaching copy-write laws so people can experience quake for free.
You'd think so, but Vista can do some pretty amazing things in terms of (in)compatibility. Anyway, nice review, looks fun; I might give it a shot (hah).
That's just how quake games are, imo there is no other game out there where the difference in skill from a total newb to a pro is just THAT big, some one who played quake 2 or 3 for a long time will dance around you like no tomorrow and take you down like fly's
And a small tip: the most important thing in this game is playing by sound, you can literally know where your enemy is at any given moment just by listening xD
Played gunz(quit it cuz my hand hurt like hell after playing for only 1h) and every call of duty game except 3, and i still stand by my comment, it is after all just my opinion you know.
ps: love your reviews, only review that wrong review was about granado espada (not that its a bad game) about cash shop being balanced, well dunno how it was then but now its a great bloody joke, cash shop users are so OP'ed its not even funny x_X
yeah, one of the main problems with these kinds of games, review wise. is that they keep updating the shiz and we cant do a review per every patch now can we?
you do realize that quake is the most played game professionally, and it got this way for a reason. COD is basically a spamfest, no questions there. Don't even try comparing q3 to steetfighter, as they are entirely different genres.
what does it mater that they are different genres? the point i was making is that lots of games show an obvious distiction between the skilled players and unskilled. genre is irrelevant.
and why cant i compare games of different genres? thats ridiculous, thats like not comparing movies because ones a horror and ones a romance.
well lets say we have a really good horror and a really good romance. You can't say that the horror is better just because you like horrors better than romance. Two different things. Its like comparing apples and oranges. If your comparing a small apple with a large apple, you can say the large apple is better. You can't start comparing the small apple to the large orange because maybe you just like apples better.
due to comment limit, I am posting another comment to finish my point.
You are clearly a newb, and don't realize all the elements of this game. Let me give an example. There is an international competition called the DeFRaG World Cup, that focuses JUST on q3 movement. It takes in incredible amount of skill just to move fast. You have no idea of this dimension of gameplay I see, because in your video all you used was the move forward button. search "genesis... the beginning of" on google video, it is an instructional video on q3 movement.
One of the things that makes this game great is the console. Press the tilde key(~), and you will bring it down. There you can input commands and COMPLETELY customize your configuration. You can put in commands like "/cg_fov 100" to increase your field of view for example. I have made it so that when I switch to a certain weapon, my sensitivity changes. Someone who has good knowledge of the console will have a slight advantage over someone who doesn't. This adds another element of skill.
Weapon switches is huge. Knowing what gun to switch to and when is what its all about. Intelligent weapon switches is extremely vital, and you don't get that in many games. Here is an example:
lighting - mid(to the extent of its max range)
plasma - mid
shotgun - close
rocket - close
rail - mid/far
machinegun - mid/far
when someone just respawns I like to use lighting to take out a bit of health, then rail to finish. I often use more than one weapon on each enemy, based off of situation.
If that isn't enough, people have made mods(modifications) to the game. One mod is designed solely to INCREASE the skill it takes to be good. They added more movement options, and decreased weapon switch times. The mod is called cpma(challenge pro-mode arena).
If you allow autodownload (/cl_allowdownload 1) then you can probably download this mod off of one of the servers, as well as a plethora of maps. The bonus of OpenArena over Quake3, is that the autodownload speed is very good.
ok i get your point. its a very skill based competitive game. and i wasn't talking about the genre with the movie point. i was making the point that even if something is a different genre you can compare them. another thing.
not the leet skilled Q3 fanatic so i dont know why your calling me a noob just because i dont strafe and jump really fast. im just playing like most people who play it do so whats the point calling me a noob? i know im a noob :S you cant expect someone who never played quake to jump into a game and know every movement trick and every little trick, thats ridiculous. and lastly i understand you must appreciate this game alot. fine. but i still dont get the point your making? i liked the game
i dont suck at shooters in general, but i REALLY suck at this one, i cant get past bring it on cpus :L

I need an answer! Is the community's player-base high enough that I will be able to find a game easily?
If so, are there variety of game modes people play online, besides the common game mode "insta gib"?

Great game but the community is just empty.. I rather play Nexuiz or Warsow because of it =/

2 questions:
1: is it a better game than alien arena (looks like it)
2: Is it multiplayer online
commentsfromlauren 2 years ago
1: by miles. especially the cutsom maps
2: yes. some servers require you to download a map but thats like 4mb

You can also play some VERY nice mods for it to.
The simpsons map is excellent fun and theTrue Combat mod is essential.
Unfortunately, True Combat is no longer multiplayer but works great with bots for single player action. Its one of the best mods ever.
Also try....
1 - Smokin Guns
2 - World of Padman
3 - Enemy Territory (with BoBot + star wars mods)

Go to...moddb.....and download True Combat, place it in your Open Arena folder, load it as a mod in open arena and see if you can get that running.
You'll be VERY glad you did.
