the more you understand about martial art and wing chun... the more you will know that it is the "center gravity" and less about the centerline. centerlines are when your opponent is amateur and aren't too mobile. If they move around... focus on the center of gravity instead.
You attack from your center line ... wether your infront or at the side of the opponent ... you don't attack the opponents strongest point if you can help it "their center line"
If an opponent is using alot of forward force against you ... the only way of redirecting there force without having to use too much force re-directing it, is by side stepping.
if you try and move them off course whilst staying put they'll most likely plow into you!
@LondonGabbaSquat The way I always start training basic self defense to any student is test their former knowledge. Everyone without fail ends up against a wall or cornered. You are right. The way I explain this to them is," if a car is driving towards you, do you try and stop it? Do you step back? No, you move to the side. :)" Best defense is avoidence, you don't have to block an attack that isn't coming towards you. :)
You can go in either center or side but it depends on how far your from your attacker, attacker's height, your attacker's lead punch, attacker's base, your aggresiveness and your base. You don't want to go centerline on a hook because it will still land. If anything, you want to attack your opponent's lead side because you can recover better on both ends. Most attackers will throw jab/straight punch then uppercut or hook then uppercut.
In real Wing Chun you attack the center line, not 'go to one side'. You go to the side only as a defensive movement, after he has committed to something. The very act of stepping to the side for no reason opens you up to 1) a groin kick, and 2)If he just crouches down and steps in at that moment and slams into you with his body weight(something real WC teaches) you will be sent flying!
@rpierini I'm not sure how long you've done WC or how many WC Sifus you've studied with. But over the last 40 years I've studied with 4 direct student of Yip Man. I also have a clip if Sifu Chan Chee Man showing how Yip Man taught him to "take one side". We compete at our school and win. Do you fight or compete. Also to say real WC shows something about your character.
I wasn't trying to be offensive- But please ACTUALLY CONSIDER AND TEST OUT WHAT I SAID. Yes, I know what I'm talking about. You only go to the side as a defensive move!
My sifu served as an assistant instructor to Eddie Chong many years.
He has taken WC to the next level as far as understanding and application- Our people dominate in chi sao and also in sparring- not only vs. students from familiar lineages but also, and especially against those of W. Cheung's lineage.
@rpierini I can go to the blindside offensively as well. Please tell me what events your guys do full contact in. We have people interested in competing. Or your guys can come the NYC to compete in the Manup Standup events. I can be reached here or my website: wingchunkwoon.
@rpierini stay in the centreline my ass what if you are 150pds and your up against someone that is 250pds what happend to wingchun then you peasant of course its about going out on the blind side how can you say that getting out of the centreline is for defence? , how can you say this is not real wingchun? we like to call guys like you modern wingchun, . enough is said i have made my point. cheers from australia world wingchun kungfu association

Well generaly the rule to wing chun is don't attack the opponents strongest point. Fight force with re-direction not force.
