  • Have you sold it ?

  • it's not for sale...it will be used as a dummy vehicle for my port fuel injection x-flow project.

My grandpa used to own it so it's more than just metal on wheels.

    Sorry

  • @noe179

what do u mean dummy vehicle?

u gonna strip it and test fit parts? why not use actual project car for that?!

also 33mpg? a petrol crossflow could do that!

  • Well, I'm an Engineer of some sort and enjoy anything doing controls, mechanical and some electrical stuff. I'm no expert in anything but lately I have built my own water brake dynamometer. (watch it in my channel)

Currently I'm rebuilding a 1.3 x-flow (681F type) for this escort but the plans are fuel inject this engine with better controls and maybe even a three way catalyst. Sorry for the technical jargon. and thanks for your comments

  • @noe179

dont try and make crossflows exhaust emissions clean u will fail!

crossflows always have high HC emissions due to lack of swirl in intake/combustion space.

this lack of swirl causes fuel to fall out of charge faster so u have to run rich to compensate- a lot of fuel doesnt even burn it just puddles through!for this reason a catalyst is out of the question.

exhaust cats cause more pollution if u do short journeys on normal cars also!

  • You're telling me not to try? I'm laughing at the moment.

Sure I will try and if I fail, no big deal! It will be a bigger failure if I don't try!

    cheers

  • @noe179

    ok I'll re phrase that!

by the time u get a crossflow any where near clean it will have no power and probably have to be so lean that it glows!!! (joke).

its a bit like polishing a turd.

  • @tpvalley

If you run an engine lean, it simply cannot be clean - the NOx levels with shoot way up. The point of having a 3-way catalyst with a downstream oxygen sensor is to calibrate the engine around stoichiometry. The sensor output should be quasi-steady around 620mV. If it switches similar to an upstream oxygen/lambda sensor, it means that the catalyst is fouled or dead! They also do it on newer vehicles equiped with OBDII in the US and newer EOBD compliant vehicles in Europe. Cheers

  • @noe179

the stoichiometric ratio assumes that no fuel falls out of the charge, if it does u need a richer mixture for the right mixture to be ignited as some just passes through engine and makes big HC emmissions, u therefore cannot run a cat on a crossflow; a modern engine uses swirl so mixture remains suspended/ atomised; a crossflow has non.

ever had a modern car with a missfire and killed the cat?

modern emisions stuff just ruines cars, putting it on an old engine is pointless.

  • I absolutely love the old Mk I's.

  • is this a malta car ???

  • it does sound like one from Malta

  • yes it does! they do some strange conversions over there still cool though

  • @pintopowerwheels yes it is

  • finely a diesel engine in a escort

  • OMG I'm sure theirs a little man with a hammer inside your engine trying to get out 8)

    Love the mk1's well done

  • The little man is called Mr Diesel Knock! He's a handsome little guy with a big smile always carrying a hammer! cheers

  • @no1aussiepaul . fukn oath it does. Just doesn't sound right from an esky hey, But good effort anyway

  • nice sounding engine, but 33mpg?? I had one of these engines in my A60 Cambridge & it always gave more than 40mpg,usually closer to 45,great job in restoring the MK1 from scrap. Don't let the pessimists put you down

  • 33mpg based on the US gallon which is around 3.78 litres. The UK gallon is bigger, around 4.5 litres. That would equate to 40mpg based on UK gallon which would be close to what your A60 was doing.

  • 3.78 litres.... Of course, I always assume a UK/ Imperial gallon, maybe my A60 was just exceptional, the fuel economy I was getting was delivering takeaway meals! It was so addictive the way this A60 (2650 pounds weight ) could sprint up hills at 45mph or more. The sound was another addictive thing. Thanks for reply

  • proset gbin hu hsiebu....mhix xi magna fina imma ma thallikx l-art zgur.

  • FWIW my friends MK4 Cortina estate had a 2.1 Ford diesel, needed Granada front springs to keep the nose up but it chugged around OK, top speed was far from spectacular but it trundled around OK. I think people remember the Escort RS series and twin-cams well but forget how awful the small engined ones were, my sister had a MK2 1100 many years ago. It was not exactly a rocketship!

Still would be fun with a modern jap turbo petrol engine though!

  • Did this car live in Malta when it was converted to diesel? Loads of Maltese cars were fitted with BMC and Japanese diesels in the 70's and 80's as diesel was, to quote a local guy I spoke to when on holiday there some years back "the life blood of all things mechanical on the island"

  • yes. it was converted to diesel in malta. the bmc diesel engine was a very popular engine swap in malta in the 70s and 80s.

  • Enjoy it, tidy looking car, the world has no shortage of Ford Escorts plus I think people forget what a P.O.S the 1100 x-flow was!!

Incidentally a friend put a stinky diesel in his Cortina, again it was a rough car which he had resurrected from scrap, when he rebuilt it however that piece of scrap became a presentable and usable car. Well done.

  • Thanks mate. This escort is presentable and it was ressurrected since I replaced many panels and sheet steel around. The only problem is that some people are jealous, neve mind it's a noisy old diesel! Cheers

  • xi trid tijaw dak il mk1 king?

  • If anyone deserves a special medal, it's you. What a complete disregard for the spirt of this car. What a complete disrespect of it's fantastic character... A brilliant car ruined by a noisey, dirty, oil-burner. What a waster...

  • that mk1 was resurected from the junk yard. read below. We spent two years replacing rust with sheet steel and replacing most of the body panels that were still available at that time. I do agree 100% though, that the engine defeats the spirit of the car. Look at my other videos pls. I do have a Lotus Cortina mk2 which is my pride and joy also as much as this escort.

  • i'm surprised you havent been stoned to death. That completely defeats the purpose of that car.

  • Anybody posting rude words of anykind on any of my short clips will be removed. Please respect the opinions of others.

  • nice one!!!That's the sort of thing I'd like to build, maybe with a cortina though. but not a BMC diesel!! Ford 1.8 td only snap cambelts if not changed every 36000 miles.

  • sorry , but that is SOOOOOO wrong matey.

  • This is TOTALLY WRONG what the hell were you thinking, please get a x-flow in their. Waste of a tidy looking mk1 in my opinion.

  • That escort was a rust bucket. We replace both wings, both doors, front panel, rear panel, left rear wheel arc, floor pans and chassis beneath pans, plus numerous amount of patches here and there. It did look great finally after lots of scrubbing and panel work but my pocket said that the BMC is there to stay. Good old trusty engine and if you know how to exactly make the CR ratio ratio correct with a well calibrated pump and injectors, they sound smoother than a toyota. Not this example though!

  • couldnt agree more, ppl have died for less!

  • haha thats wrong but funny as well

  • I don't use this vehicle anymore and I bought it from my grandfather some 12 years ago. it had already a bmc which was adapted way back in the early 70's. We just built a custom bell housing for 5-speed type 9 which made it more drivable. The ford 1.8 was never on my list since they just snap timing belts. If I ever get to use this escort agian, I might go back to a kent 1.6 with throttle bodies and Electronic port fuel injection. Maybe someday.

  • Snap timing belts?!

Only if u dont change them often enough!

I know of one doing over 250,ooo miles!

Mine has 125,ooo, weighs 1,400kg and returns nearly 50mpg!

U want injection use sierra 2.0 EFI engine.

  • Everybody has different preferences. When I built that escort (10 years ago) I was a student with barely any money and just did the best I could do with a limited budget. I used it for a total of two years and it was fun! Nowadays I moved to the US and no longer drive fords (too cheesy). I do have a Lotus Cortina mk2 which I use when I'm on vacation and it's the only car that puts a grin on my face after a drive. Cheers!

  • Sould have fitted a 1.6 or 1.8 ford diesel, they may bolt on that box.

Theyre cheap, more power, better mpg etc.

Them bmc diesels r so slow.

I have often thought about fitting a diesel to a mk 1 or 2 or cortina etc; good engine access.

A 1.8 td would be good, 90 bhp and probably over 40 mpg.
