It's a Gospel song that refers to the way Moses came to free the Jews from the Egyptian in the first part of Exodus [chapter 1~21]. Pharaoh represents the masters, and freedom land represented the North where there was no slavery. The slaves would sing the song to express their hope for freedom but hid it in a metaphor so the slave masters would get mad about them singing about slavery and freedom.
