This song just gets better every time I hear. It's an epic song and yet it's under 3 minutes long. I get chills when I listen to the outro. Quiet simply, one of the best rock songs ever written.
Song references French engineer Alexandre Gustave Eiffel, who designed the Eiffel Tower; Pixies frontman Black Francis thought it was a "fascinating subject" to compose a song about. Francis also mentioned another meaning of the song: "Because of Alexandre Gustave Eiffel, but also because it's funny: in Australia, you often say 'It's a smart Alec' for a guy who's nice but not very bright."However, the usage of the term "Smart Alec" is to denote someone who makes wisecracks or a know-it-all.
@ramezp To add to this, Black Francis thought it was a "fascinating subject" to compose a song about because, when the Eiffel tower was built it was frowned upon and mainly viewed as an eye sore. Which later became a national monument for the entire country of France. I believe that this song symbolizes the growth of the Pixies. Miss understood in their time, but later growing to become a legend.
The Pixies were just about the greatest rock pioneers of their time. They might have drawn influences from The Clash and The Ramones but their sound is uniquely their own. Every cd outside of Trompe Le Monde (which this song comes from) is absolutely great.
Good Lord, for you younger ones posting here making "sounds like" comments about Clash and Ramones, please realize Pixies were extremely influential punk band of the late 80's/early 90's..Do yourself a favor and listen to more of their albums and maybe Frank Black's solo stuff. Example: Kurt Cobain said we was afraid "Smells Like Teen Spirit" sounded too much like a Pixies song. Listen to Pixies' "Gouge Away" (awesome tune) then to SLTS and see if you agree.....
This is also my favourite Pixies song. I love the great surf guitar riff and the quite emotional, "...see you beneath the archway of aerodynamics" outro. Chokes me up, don't know why.
My mom actually named me after this song, lol, i quite enjoy it.

I love this song but don't understand why it's called Alec Eiffel and not Gustave Eiffel ? Anyone has the reason ?
