ben33603, it was early sixties a friend drove me to Whiskey-A-Go-Go on Sunset Strip, and this Canadian walked right by Rivers. I remember saying the singer was really good. I didn't know who the hell he was at that time. My friend told me it was Johnny Rivers. I've been a fan ever since. What a unique voice he has. Remember the girls dancing in the cages? I now own a bar and often think of building those cages. But like you, Ben, I'm getting old!
@10131899 Some say our youth is our happiest; myself, at 72, I think I have never been happier. We are slow learners and now you know much more than before...and we love more too! (I do like "Yesterday, When I was Young." sung by Roy Clark or Glenn Campbell.) A retired Catholic priest in Canada. P.S. Don't want to get "religious" but we "have here no Lasting City" (Heb 13:14). BTW I love You Tube, Johnny Rivers and all the great "oldies"! Oh yeah, God Bless You!
@watchful38 I am 72 also, and I am the happiest I have ever been. I wish I could have seen Johnney when he appeared at the Whiskey A Go Go on the Sunset Strip.
Where have all the flowers gone? Where have all the Humunaity gone? Where have the moral gone? Where have all the USA gone?. Where have the USA soldiers gone? Where have the crazy TEA PARTY gone? Where have all de Europe gone? Where have all the happy gone? Where have all of us gone? Where have the world gone? Please. someone give me the answer. It is easy? Of course not!
@hell4367 "Sic transit gloria mundi!" "Thus passes the glory of the World". Or, "Ubinam Gentium sumus." (Cicero). Or, Bermuda's emblem. "Quo fata ferunt" "How in the Hell did we end up here?" Without trying to squelch all dissent, but the Holy Bible says in Hebrews 13:14, "For here we have no lasting city; we are seeking one which is to come." Alleluia! In the meantime however we must try, as much as possible, to make a little bit of Heaven here on earth. A retired Catholic priest.
Most folk-rock songs sound as dated as I Want To Hold Your Hand but this has worn very well. The Motown girls singing back-up were a great concept- it was their teen-age brothers and cousins at risk in the Mekong in 1965, not middle class white kids experiencing vicariously the crazy Asian war through Top 40 anti-war songs.
@gilliansl I love Johnny Rivers version the best, if only because his was the 1st version I heard when I was a kid. One of my older sisters had promotional 45 rpm of it on Imperial records that she took from jukebox at the New Port Richey, FL recreation center that my father was center coordinator at the time. & I still have that 45 rpm & it still plays! I'd love for some man to do a remake of Johnny's version, with perhaps ending with a change of the chorus to "When will we ever learn?"
