It's partly about his struggles with God, and his faith, which is something most Christians (and indeed non-Christians) have doubts about throughout their life. It's so powerful.
This song will always be one of my favorites. It is beautiful in so many ways. Also, watching this video gives me chills, Brand New is truly phenomenal!
This song is so amazing. I wish that people would know a little about the band before they try to comment about the substance. Brand New is not a religious band and Jesse himself tends to avoid religion. He was raised in a Christian household but struggled with his personal faith. This song is saying it's okay to wonder, to worry, and to be fearful. We all have demons. Listen to other Brand New songs. It's clear that they aren't all about Christianity. Don't be ignorant if you want to poke fun.
6 Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”
I am a Christian, and this song speaks to me, because even I am afraid of being rejected, of finding myself alone in the end. Even Christians sometimes have doubts. Doubts aren't wrong; its how you react to those doubts that determines everything.
I hate the asshole anti-religious zealot trolls who make stupid comments on anything with the word Jesus in it. read the fucking Constitution where it says we have freedom of religion and freedom of speech and stfu about what other people believe.
Why are so many people hating on this song or making jokes about Christianity? We're not forcing you to watch this or accept Jesus as your savior, but just like Jesus, this video will always be here for you if you change your heart and mind :)
@gummers397 I'm not sure if you are talking about this band being Christian, because they're not. Just because the song is titled Jesus Christ doesn't necessarily make it Christian. At least in the case of this song.
There need to be more bands like Brand New! Everything they do contains real emotion and soul which sadly seems to be missing from most other songs today.
I feel its a song about a man being scared of his death and not knowing what will happen. I don't feel its for or against religion. I feel its a very humble way of looking at himself saying hes nothing special and that hes done bad in this world. The whole thing about him nailing Jesus back up... well i feel its saying he so scared of the end he probably deny someone trying to save him.. making Jesus into a symbol of the Savior.
To all of you people who want to discuss religion here... THIS IS NOT THE PLACE TO DO IT! I am not against religion itself, for I am a religious person. I just need to clarify that this is the wrong place to discuss deep theological beliefs and even trying to convert people. Doing it online just isn't a very effective place to do it. Just stick to commenting on the music and enjoy it!
I called up Jesse and asked him what the song was about so people stop saying stupid things and sounding dumb, he said its a song about going around trying to find the best seven eleven that has best pina Colada slurpees
@MissDenverbaby glad to hear it... everyone has something that does it for them and I bet its more than a handful of people that can attribute it to Brand New.
Hey everyone..I'm an 18 year-old kid trying to reach a few people with my music..I just did a cover of "Children of Divorce" by Jonny Craig and it would mean a lot if you took a few minutes to check it out, thanks!!
This song and I, we have been through some hard times together. I will never be able to thank this band enough for it. When I'm at my lowest this is the song that catches me right before I hit the ground.
@MattrickBT people are assholes. I agree with you there. I also agree the song is not a quote religious song. One of my favorite lines is when he says Im scared I'll get scared and I'll nail you back up. That is so pure. Its honest. I am a Christian. So many people would be afraid to think that, much less write it and sing it. I dont claim to know a lot about what the whole song means. However, I do believe he is saying "wood and nails", not "wooden nails". Anyone know for certain?
It's not hard to listen to the lyrics and understand what he meant when he wrote them... We don't need to be a true christian (as I do not believe in God) to understand this song as the song isn't even religious at all. Just because a song contains elements of religion does not make it a religious song. God people are stupid. Religion has deeply rooted symbolism in society; we understand devil is evil, jesus is good etc. The crucifixion shows mankind's greatest sin yet shows our true freedom.
And any one of us would be willing to nail Jesus back up on the cross if it absolved out sins so we wouldn't wonder about life after death. The song is about selfishness but a very human and understandable selfishness. I think if many people were directly faced with the choice of go to hell or nail Jesus back up on that cross, they would nail him back up. It's human nature to hate and fear and destroy just like it was human nature to crucify jesus. We're assholes.
I think you all misunderstand this song. It's not about fighting or overcoming or anything. It's about guilt yet being unrepentant. It's about the unwavering selfishness of mankind. Jesus (if you believe in it) died for our sins, to absolve us of them. It's about holding on to some hope of something on the other side. It starts whimsical in wondering if we float through the cieling or have St. Thomas take our hands at the pearly gates to the realization that we all have wood and nails (cont)
@MattrickBT - i like what your saying but i think your thinking way to deep about this song...
Its about him not knowing what happens after death... when he dies how does he know he is dead,he doesnt know and thats the point you dont know what happens no one does... he is going to be scared and nail jesus back up... not because he is going to hell anyways why would jesus come to you if your going to hell =]......
this song is about believing in something, which is a hard concept. because there IS something bigger then us, but we don't know what. we cannot see it with our eyes, so we just try to justify it the best we can.
i hate it when i hear people say this song is christian, with its hard agnostic or pretty much atheist, im atheist myself i absolutely love this song and think jessie is a genius in lyrical literature!
@TheKingreptar8282 I wouldn't stretch as far as atheist, the song is definitely based heavily on doubt and religious uncertainty, but I don't get the impression of a disbelief in God/Jesus. But I get what you're saying and I agree, Jesse's lyrics are unbelievable.
I think this video works great with the song. I dont think its unreleased for any reason like that, its probably because this isnt the type of song that gets taken the right way in a commercial environment. There were other songs with a bigger appeal to the general media, this is one of the most dreary tracks on the album and that never translates well publicly.
None the less, it is my favorite track by the band overall. Truly brings a lot of things we all think out, making it okay to think it
Brand New is so unique. Their lyrics and sound hit somewhere deep inside me where most music doesn't..
I know everyone hates this, and no one will probably listen, but I'm a college kid with the dream of making music the rest of my life. I did a cover of "The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot," it would mean a lot to me if you guys checked out my page, and give me a thumbs up so I can be seen by more people. Thank you everyone!
To me, this seriously wins my vote for the most depressing song ever made. But what I love about Brand New is even though their songs are so depressing, there always seems to be beauty and hope in them. Towards the end of this song, it cuts of in silence in a moment as if it were saying that all hope was lost, only to come back again with the same beautiful tempo that was going throughout the whole song. So there's still hope :).
I don't Agree... Maybe You've not experienced enough to understand. It it makes sense to me. "We all have wooden nails" we are all uncertain at one time, there is sooooo much to believe, so much to chose from. Not to mention at this era in Brand New their was alot of heartache. Death. So you can figure that out. Pretty much. "jesus christ I'm not afraid to die, I'm a little bit scared of what comes after" They are definately not athiests.
@Ayaime7 That doesn't have anything to do with why I dislike this video. In fact, the very reason that I do dislike the video is because I don't think it does a very good job of appropriately capturing the heartache that you're talking about.
You seemed to go on a mini tangent about what the song is meant for no reason. I actually don't really appreciate the superior tone of your comment at all. "Maybe you've not experienced enough to understand." Awfully presumptuous, aren't you?
@Ayaime7 I agree... sort of... but you really are being a condescending ass. wooden nails is more a of a metaphor to we all have our own sins, not we're uncertain... the uncertainty is expressed way earlier when he asks the question "do you believe you're missing out" or "will Thomas ask to see my hands." This whole song isn't about "overcoming" at all, it's about being scared to the point of depression because he's so unsure about what he believes... think you need to calm down a bit hotshot.
A real song . That worth listening to . There a good band listing to them from the beggining and i am from croatia, europe for the americans :) near france and germany. Germany the ones who stared the ww2 you entered. WW2 the war the americans entered. Still dont know? Hmm. The place where hitler ruled, hitler the monster from hell.Still dont know!? Hell a part of christian religion where satan lives. Oh now you know. Aha your from texas. It figures!!!!

@watchthiscityfall Nice.... comeback? I'm puzzled as to why you've done that. Jeez, I must look like a retard. I'm more puzzled than an agnostic choosing between the bible or something actually fun. Yup, defiantly look like an agnostic. A pathetic human being that can't make up their mind about the easiest choice alive. Possibly more pathetic than religion itself.
@dragonangel6 For some reason I don't think you're clear on what Agnosticism is. It's not that I "can't make up my mind" It's just unknowable if there is actually a "higher power" or not, or an afterlife, etc. I have no doubt, I have no faith, I remain completely and utterly neutral because I do not care. I was just being silly and joking around, you're the one who took offense, you silly Athiest! Now go and try to have some fun instead of being all serious and what not.
@watchthiscityfall I took a lot of offence, in my comment, I was clearly crying. No, i was hurling abuse for the fun of it. I know you were joking, you moron.
Your little explanation has really cleared up some knowledge for me,... oh wait, that;s bullshit.
In the same way Religion uses the bible to guide around what's fact, that what you've done. You have no balls to admit you're anything other than a coward. Good day Sir :)
@dragonangel6 lol You make me laugh, butt head, good Sunday to you as well. (Just an FYI I think you're just as hypocritical of yourself the same way those Bible thumping Conservatives are with their "Savior") But yes have a good Sunday too.
This was not how I imagined this video at all. This is pseudo-horror in it's creepiness, when the song doesn't seem to relate to it at all; except maybe the end where he is set free and flies away after committing suicide.
@chesterinoaussie Well, the name of the album refers to Daniel Johnston, a musician who has schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. I think that the video kind of incorporates some of that through physical representations of the disorders, coupled with the lyrics, giving this strange mix of heavy Christian symbolism and unreal shifting shapes and images. Just my two cents. =)
@TheFantasmatron Aah ok that makes sense. :) My take of this song was just a straight 'depressed song' sort of in the vein of 'srxt' by Block Party- but after really examining the lyrics it has other themes to go with it.
@chesterinoaussie OH FIZZLE SHNICKS AND MORONS... Is everyone soooo narrow minded? Obviously it takes an artist to understand this song and the videw. Its about struggle, fight, overcoming, learning to fly again after You fall flat on your face. After Your head/heart/ soul has been "clouded" wtih years of abuse
@Ayaime7 whether self inflicted or not. Or after many of your friends have been stripped away from you. Brand New went through a MORBID period for a darn well good reason. And you shouldnt be allowed to even listen to them if you don't respect them enough to Take the journey and real a little before you open your big azz mouths.
@Ayaime7 I don't think the song has anything to do with getting back up after you fall down. To me it's about being depressed and doubting your religion because of how bad you feel. There are a tonne of techniques in the video that are very creative but, for me, it just wasn't very aesthetically pleasing.
This album didn't really stick with me when I first listened to it, I ended up not touching it for about 8 months, but then gave it another shot. I cried when I heard this song. The whole theme arced over the entire album is exactly what the name says, fighting over what is right and wrong in both your physical life and spiritual one, one that as an open-minded Christian, I deal with heavily. Brand New perfectly captures the balance between doubt and faith that every Christian has to deal with.
@Puckett57 Thank God Im not alone on this. Im a Christain but open-minded and it can cause doubt and confusion. My friends are full believers no doubt at all, so, they put on. Im glad you had shared because well i feel little better.
Such beautiful, outstanding cinematography. The quality of this is unbelievable, especially the lighting. It puts every 8mm short I've seen on here to shame.
@zlenrigh r u a hater of JB? he is blessed by god in a special way...u need to know about him and how he had difficulties in his life without losing hope he went on and god helped him,are u telling god is wrong to do it? don't u go against what god has for others
@qaztinalina Hey before you go off on someone learn to spell. Also the comment was meaning that Brand New has better music not that Justin Bieber is stupid.

@GermanDoerksen I believe it's wood and nails.

@dragonangel6 Ye-ah! Go fucking Agnosticism! :::bitch slaps you silly::::
watchthiscityfall 7 months ago
@watchthiscityfall Nice.... comeback? I'm puzzled as to why you've done that. Jeez, I must look like a retard. I'm more puzzled than an agnostic choosing between the bible or something actually fun. Yup, defiantly look like an agnostic. A pathetic human being that can't make up their mind about the easiest choice alive. Possibly more pathetic than religion itself.
dragonangel6 7 months ago
@dragonangel6 For some reason I don't think you're clear on what Agnosticism is. It's not that I "can't make up my mind" It's just unknowable if there is actually a "higher power" or not, or an afterlife, etc. I have no doubt, I have no faith, I remain completely and utterly neutral because I do not care. I was just being silly and joking around, you're the one who took offense, you silly Athiest! Now go and try to have some fun instead of being all serious and what not.
watchthiscityfall 7 months ago
@watchthiscityfall I took a lot of offence, in my comment, I was clearly crying. No, i was hurling abuse for the fun of it. I know you were joking, you moron.
Your little explanation has really cleared up some knowledge for me,... oh wait, that;s bullshit.
In the same way Religion uses the bible to guide around what's fact, that what you've done. You have no balls to admit you're anything other than a coward. Good day Sir :)
Smiley face to show i'm not serious. Dickhead. :)
dragonangel6 7 months ago
@dragonangel6 lol You make me laugh, butt head, good Sunday to you as well. (Just an FYI I think you're just as hypocritical of yourself the same way those Bible thumping Conservatives are with their "Savior") But yes have a good Sunday too.

This was not how I imagined this video at all. This is pseudo-horror in it's creepiness, when the song doesn't seem to relate to it at all; except maybe the end where he is set free and flies away after committing suicide.
chesterinoaussie 7 months ago
@chesterinoaussie Well, the name of the album refers to Daniel Johnston, a musician who has schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. I think that the video kind of incorporates some of that through physical representations of the disorders, coupled with the lyrics, giving this strange mix of heavy Christian symbolism and unreal shifting shapes and images. Just my two cents. =)
TheFantasmatron 6 months ago
@TheFantasmatron Aah ok that makes sense. :) My take of this song was just a straight 'depressed song' sort of in the vein of 'srxt' by Block Party- but after really examining the lyrics it has other themes to go with it.
chesterinoaussie 6 months ago
@chesterinoaussie OH FIZZLE SHNICKS AND MORONS... Is everyone soooo narrow minded? Obviously it takes an artist to understand this song and the videw. Its about struggle, fight, overcoming, learning to fly again after You fall flat on your face. After Your head/heart/ soul has been "clouded" wtih years of abuse
Ayaime7 3 months ago
@Ayaime7 whether self inflicted or not. Or after many of your friends have been stripped away from you. Brand New went through a MORBID period for a darn well good reason. And you shouldnt be allowed to even listen to them if you don't respect them enough to Take the journey and real a little before you open your big azz mouths.
Ayaime7 3 months ago
@Ayaime7 I don't think the song has anything to do with getting back up after you fall down. To me it's about being depressed and doubting your religion because of how bad you feel. There are a tonne of techniques in the video that are very creative but, for me, it just wasn't very aesthetically pleasing.
chesterinoaussie 3 months ago
This album didn't really stick with me when I first listened to it, I ended up not touching it for about 8 months, but then gave it another shot. I cried when I heard this song. The whole theme arced over the entire album is exactly what the name says, fighting over what is right and wrong in both your physical life and spiritual one, one that as an open-minded Christian, I deal with heavily. Brand New perfectly captures the balance between doubt and faith that every Christian has to deal with.
Puckett57 7 months ago
@Puckett57 Thank God Im not alone on this. Im a Christain but open-minded and it can cause doubt and confusion. My friends are full believers no doubt at all, so, they put on. Im glad you had shared because well i feel little better.
