Why there are pics of Uncle Sam and US Navy seamen (and perhaps american ships too) if the whole battle was fought before America joined the war?

I love the scratchy old "78 RPM" sound to this recording. Or maybe it's a well worn "45 RPM". Anyway, it's pretty cool.
