@SebaChannel You are right about the similarities between the two pieces, however Systematic Chaos came out in 2007, one year before Watershed, so technically Hessian Peel sounds like Repentance ;) I'm certain there was no intent by Opeth to try to replicate anything from Dream Theater though. I seriously love both bands equally. @4436355 The really strange thing is that this song good AND perect. It's counter-intuitive and seems impossible at first glance, but when you understand how the band manipulates the chromatic scale and merges it with more dissonant scales and off-rhythm drum beats, it begins to make sense how they do it. The devil worship probably helps too.

I absolutely agree with penguin. This is an amazing song until the growls. Is anyone else as frustrated with Opeth as me? Immense musical talent and near perfect song up until he starts that horrid growling. I mean I love the instrumental all the way through, including the heavier guitar, it's just the growling that I can't stand. Anyone know any bands that do what Opeth do without the growls?

@MrSunnyjimbob I used not to be able to stand the growling but for me, it was possible to get used to them and, over time, even appreciate them. I understand now why they do it. Once you can listen to the growling without thinking "AHH MY EARS" all the time, they actually add a whole new level of intensity to the song.

@MrSunnyjimbob Listen to the Damnation album, and the Ghost Reveries one. Damnation all the way through is soft masterpieces, and Ghost Reveries is like the gothic, metal version of Damnation. Believe me, I hated the growls too, but after listening to "Harlequin Forest" or "The Drapery Falls", it'll grow on you.
