U GUYS GET OVER YRSWELF JUSTIN BEIBBER IS THE COOLEZT EVER I LISTEN TOP HIM EVERY DAY AND I REALLY LOVE HIS MUSTIC SO STOP TALKIN BAD ABOUT JSTIN BECAUSE HE'S SEXY AND COOL!!!!!!!!!1111
@SebaChannel You are right about the similarities between the two pieces, however Systematic Chaos came out in 2007, one year before Watershed, so technically Hessian Peel sounds like Repentance ;) I'm certain there was no intent by Opeth to try to replicate anything from Dream Theater though. Both bands are ace |m/
@Niamorg1007 I'm trying hard to remember if any of the DT members actually acknowledged it or not, but let's face it: the "Repentance" bit was heavily influenced by Opeth to begin with. I seriously love both bands equally. I firmly believe that a lot of fantastic new music inspires a lot of other fantastic new music, which means we all (as listeners and, some of us, as players) win!
@4436355 The really strange thing is that this song good AND perect. It's counter-intuitive and seems impossible at first glance, but when you understand how the band manipulates the chromatic scale and merges it with more dissonant scales and off-rhythm drum beats, it begins to make sense how they do it. The devil worship probably helps too.
@4436355 This is beyond music. It's a harder genre to grasp cause it's not written to be catchy. Obviously you're the kind of person who can only grasp the simple song structures or timing style. Don't put something down cause it's written by someone with a deeper mind and comprehension of music than the artists you listen to.
@4436355 You are even less open minded than a sealed cube. yeah i think KSE is good i have seen them live, but they are like so many others in their respective genre. But this is just so unique.
i wish OPETH's music could take solid form so i could touch it. i wish it could take liquid form so i could inject it. that's not really very healthy, is it?
@guitarismickthompson the letter 'O' in the logo is the face of Pringles, twisted 90 degrees to the right. So I think it's quite healthy :-D hahaha! You can google on 'Opeth Pringle', the first link has a thread about it on a forum
I absolutely agree with penguin. This is an amazing song until the growls. Is anyone else as frustrated with Opeth as me? Immense musical talent and near perfect song up until he starts that horrid growling. I mean I love the instrumental all the way through, including the heavier guitar, it's just the growling that I can't stand. Anyone know any bands that do what Opeth do without the growls?
@MrSunnyjimbob you said it exactly how i would have. they make truly amazingly beautiful music but then drop it into gutteral growling death metal and it makes it so that the songs could never be even close to as good as it would be if they didnt add that shit
@MrSunnyjimbob I used not to be able to stand the growling but for me, it was possible to get used to them and, over time, even appreciate them. I understand now why they do it. Once you can listen to the growling without thinking "AHH MY EARS" all the time, they actually add a whole new level of intensity to the song.
@MrSunnyjimbob Listen to the Damnation album, and the Ghost Reveries one. Damnation all the way through is soft masterpieces, and Ghost Reveries is like the gothic, metal version of Damnation. Believe me, I hated the growls too, but after listening to "Harlequin Forest" or "The Drapery Falls", it'll grow on you.
@jrLOVE2bh8d because..in justin gayber "song" baby the top comment says: this is the best song and appears this song....but i listen it before that xD
@SpartanLaserCanon Instead of desperately asking for thumbs as if it decides whether you'll stay alive or not, you could say something that makes you deserve them.
Is it just me or does anyone else hear the music from the final level gauntlet of bosses in Super Contra III after 9:32? Either way. It sounds brutally-awesome.
@mrdeathamore I would have to disagree, I have learned songs like The Lotus Eater and observed them, they are very well balanced and arranged with very interesting chord structures and I guess you could say elements; from the classic sounds of Opeth and beyond.
@Megadedly I just like this song because its more closer to me, such a great lyrics combined with amazing riffs and acoustics, I listen it very often and its just not enough... Maybe I just don't get other stuff, but The Lotus Eater is definitely not my song :)
@mrdeathamore Really? well, although Hessian Peel isn't very complex in acoustic work, it does sound good. The Lotus Eater is groundbreaking in a way, no one else, ever, has done what has been done in that song.
@Megadedly Well, this overprogressive sound of The Lotus Eater is the reason why I really don't like this song, this too versatile even for Opeth, that's definitely was an experiment and because it sounds little chaotic. Other Opeth's stuff is way more linear and have strong structure unlike this... Although, is still good song :)
@Fan2guitaare It's you that is limited. I listen to much music, including pure folk. If you can't like Opeth when Mikael growls, you don't like them at all. They are a Progressive METAL band.
@Megadedly not liking growls because it's not in your personal preference isn't a bad thing. it IS bad though to say that growls aren't a viable form of musical expression.
@Megadedly Opeth is a progressive metal band, so it's pretty typical of people to prefer their softer songs and sections (like Damnation) rather than something from My Arms Your Hearse or Deliverance. it's better for the guy to enjoy Opeth but not like the growling, than not liking Opeth altogether.
@Megadedly i know what you mean, but still.. growling is definitely an acquired taste. it's pretty much unheard of in conventiional mainstream media. the best part about appreciating metal vocals is the sense of identity you get by relating to something that a majority could never understand, plus they're badass as fuck. haha :P

@whoiswhobutwho you're fucking ignorant I must admit. This is music, boy, and music is not only brutal.. Maybe Mozart, Bach - emos? I dont comparing Opeth to this two of course, but you should understand that music is very different

@badmrfrosty09 I noticed that too. I got to say this is one of the most brilliant band I have ever heard. I think they are the Pink Floyd of Metal.
