It's basically the latency of time it takes, for a signal to travel from A to B. Simple way of explaining it, is like this. 500 milliseconds. Is 500 ping. Simple. The reason it's called ping, is because there's a few other minor factors to take into account. But that's as simple as can be, for an explanation.

The reason it's called "ping" is because of the game "ping pong" a.k.a. table tennis. The ball is analogous to the said signal. It travels from player A to the B and then back to the A. Your explanation is actually incorrect, because ping measures the round-trip time (from A to B plus from B to A). One-directional measure wouldn't be very informative because connections usually have different upload and download speed.

(0.02 seconds.) You can easily tell the difference. So 150 ping, is 0.5 seconds simple. There's also a few other factors, to take into account,. But that's the basic overview on what ping is.

An example would be a motorway going alongside a railway track, if a new fast broadband is a highspeed train the old dialup might be a slow car, the train can transport more goods at the same time, and faster than the car. However that was my personal criticism. you say this ain't criticism but your first line clearly contradicts that.
