Using them more often, indeed only warped your individual perception of the word and never altered its core offensive meaning. If you knew anything about Spanish / Portuguese you'd know that gender-neutrality is not explicit i.e. "negro" does NOT mean black "thing"; it is not a noun either.
Negro/a is simply an adjective, just like "black" - it doesn't have to reference "race", though. THAT's the point.
You might take offense to "los Negros", but it's usage is no different to "Americans" or "Hispanics".

If you check a good dictionary, you'll find that the words are unrelated. The OED gives an instance of 'niggard' in the 14th century, and it has continued to mean a stingy person. 'Nigger' is much later and is related to a number of versions of the root 'negr-' which means black in most Latin languages.

Saw this movie when it first came out... with the exception of Valerie Perrine's nude scenes, this is the only scene I really remember.
