Real musicians don't feel the need to say that one instrument is better than another. The viola, and the violin for that matter, are beautiful instruments. To belittle the other in order to glorify the instrument that you prefer makes you a pathetic, ignorant, and second rate "musician".
The viola is a large and awkward instrument, which when played, sounds downright disgusting. Violists are the most insecure members of the string section. Nothing can be done about this. Violists don't like to be made fun of and therefore find ways of making people feel sorry for them. They wear shabby clothes so that they'll look as if they've just been dragged under a train. It works quite well.
@MenaceFan You sir, are a fucking retard. I played in orchestras my whole life and really good Violists sound a hundred times better than the best Violinist. Violins sounds whiney and scratchy when most people play it. Violas, like cellos have a nice smooth, full sound to them.
@EarsEat10Neon Who said anything about violinists or how they compare? The violin is a high-pitched, high-tension instrument, not easy to play. Lot of hard music written for it. Important things for a violinist to remember: #1 Keep your studio door slightly open so all can hear your brilliant practice sessions. #2 Make disparaging remarks about other violinists whenever possible, which is most of the time. #3 Tell everyone how terribly valuable your instrument is until they drool
Pretty! *sigh* this is wonderful a nice rich sound. I played viola for like 6 years noe but it gets really annoying when I'm mistaken for a violin and when the violins get all the attention it's irritating
That was Beautiful, I lost my 13 year old Grandson in a Tragic accident on Oct 2, 2011. I not sure what the meaning of 1st chair viola meant. he also played the french-horn. thank you.
This is a great performance! Bravo. The instrument appears to be fairly good sized, but in her hands it has that full, sweet alto-ish sound that only the right viola and player can make.
It is rather sad that everyone is completely ignoring the performer here, and how wonderfully she played this piece. So thank you Olga, for letting us listen and for performing it so thoughtfully and beautifully. I love how it sings, you have a very soft and calming touch to the viola. ^_^
I really like the way a viola is different from a violin, it doesn't sound too high! I've played it for 6 years but now I haven't played the instrument for years :( Don't have it anymore :(
@dancewithcashette1 I played the viola, for the first year I hated it because I didn't like practising but in the end it just becomes a part of you. Since I hated practising it kind of became a therapy for me, I only practised when I got mad. =D I guess in beginning, just practise 'cause in the end the music sheet just looks like words and your fingers and bow just have their own minds when you play the viola. XD

Ok this is a correction to my comment below. It seems that the Olga I was referring to that plays the violin is different than this Olga that plays the viola. I thought at first that they were one in the same but they are actually two different people.
I was thinking dam this sounds good, and than I saw it was Olga and I was like oh ok, no wonder. Olga is an awesome violinist. I guess if you can play the violin you can also play the viola. But can she play the cello? Hmm, now that ones played a little differently. I bet if you can play one than you can play them all. Just guessing.

@Princess2love123 all you're saying by this comment is that a really great violist must be more skilled than a really great violinist. and since what matters is the sound, you're saying violas are superior.
Er, since when is there the violin/viola war going on? They're both instruments of their own. People get over yourselves. If you're eejits like that you shouldn't be listening to music or playing an instrument cause you just don't appreciate music.
i dont know but my teacher screamed att me that i cant have my little finger strait(like this girl) i have seen oistrach and he has strait little finger too. what do you here on youtube say about that???
@danielwowman I have the same "problem". The teacher says it makes my hand look tense but my hand is totally relaxed. I think it is okay cause not everyone's body is comfortable in a certain position. For example, my teacher curves the pinky towards the palm of the hand when playing saying it's better than straight. Well, to me it isn't. I guess you can learn by certain rules and adapt to your own position as you go along, as long as the playing sounds correct.
I play the violin and viola, but for me a viola suits my style better.
It has a deeper sound than a violin and therefore it will always be supreme 'it's little brother'. And when I listen to a violin I like the sound, but a viola really gives me those shivers, you know?
In my opinion the Viola is better suited for this piece. I've heard a version with the harpsichord and the saxophone which is quite interesting, nice and mellow..
Beautiful... I had quite a bit of trouble tracking this piece on spotify/itunes based on the tittle given. After some searching I finally found it! For anyone else who is after this it comes up as HWV 373 , Violin Sonata in E Major (adagio).
@SychoKids I've been playing violin for over two years now, and I am learning viola and it only took me 20 min. to perfect twinkle twinkle, perpetual motion (Suzuki),French Folk song, and the C major scale...
@cardmagicguy99, Just because you can play a song doesn't mean you have mastered something and if you have only been playing for 2 years maybe 3 i doubt that your intonation is even close to perfect it takes people years and years just to master half, first, and third pos. and i'm fairly sure that if i were to give you rhythms to play that scale you would fail so 20 min my ass its probably garbage.
@MichelleSeven *GaSp*......the differences are very clear......a much larger body size different tuning, much deeper rich sound, this is a viola she is playing also.
Having played violin for most of my life, I couldn't stand the squeaking any more! So I took up viola at the age of 62 years - how I wish I'd done it years ago, and I managed to find a fabulous-sounding viola too. This always helps!
Not only is this video gorgeous but it provides a first class view of how to bow a stringed instrument. Love it.
Real musicians don't feel the need to say that one instrument is better than another. The viola, and the violin for that matter, are beautiful instruments. To belittle the other in order to glorify the instrument that you prefer makes you a pathetic, ignorant, and second rate "musician".

@Princess2love123 all you're saying by this comment is that a really great violist must be more skilled than a really great violinist. and since what matters is the sound, you're saying violas are superior.
silverleaf356 1 year ago
Er, since when is there the violin/viola war going on? They're both instruments of their own. People get over yourselves. If you're eejits like that you shouldn't be listening to music or playing an instrument cause you just don't appreciate music.

i dont know but my teacher screamed att me that i cant have my little finger strait(like this girl) i have seen oistrach and he has strait little finger too. what do you here on youtube say about that???
danielwowman 1 year ago
@danielwowman Your teacher sounds like a serious dick.
Bananapielord 1 year ago

Ellusionist2009 1 year ago
hell yeah violins are beautiful. She does look like an olga.

SychoKids 1 year ago
@SychoKids ignorant question. But how hard is it to pick up the viola and play it if you already know violin? :S
DillonB1234 1 year ago
@DillonB1234 dude its kind of hard considering the clef change. trust me. now i completely forgot the treble clef x)
Omega3Duck 1 year ago
@SychoKids I've been playing violin for over two years now, and I am learning viola and it only took me 20 min. to perfect twinkle twinkle, perpetual motion (Suzuki),French Folk song, and the C major scale...
cardmagicguy99 1 year ago

Love it.
