pls can some one explain the doubled edged sword thing i know it mean both helpful and harmful but if u look at a sword where is this other edge that harmful to the user( and i know its jus a figure of speach....im just sword minded lol)
It simply means the sword can cut in two directions. Therefore the brain can operate in two directions. The first cut survival the second cut is delusion (this doesn't necessarily imply harmful but it can be). e.g. believing in god might comfort you as you approach finality, however it can also lead to burning witches when cattle become disesed.
I allways said religion can be a dangerous thing. And I realy hate all the people that killed innocent or imprisoned them just because they had theories and thoughts which didn't fit with church's beliefs.
They cling to things that make them feel better. I don't blame them....but then again I do. If they were stronger mentally then maybe the world wouldn't be the way it is now.
On Pascal's Wager, are you supposed to just pretend you believe even if you don't (I know hypocrisy is more or less synonymous with religiosity, but still..), or are you supposed to be able to make yourself believe something you don't really believe? I think most religious people must resort to one or the other, but they simply can't admit it to themselves because of their religious culture. Either they are lying to us, they're lying to themselves, or they're thick as shit.
Exactly. If you choose to worship the Invisible Pink Unicorn. But if the only true god is the Flying Spaghetti Monster, you'll be making pasta for eternity.
I think the reason people will not let go of religion, is because they believe it will cause moral anarchy, and all that we have learnt to accept will be thrown up into the air, only to land in a jumbled mess.
We need to show theists that there is more to life than being told what to do... and just because you were not told to not do something, doesn't mean it is OK.
I think the common denominator is the fear of no eternal life and never seeing loved ones again i.e. it's psychological, therefore some people are prepared to believe in fairy stories to help them cope with finality.
The name Ziusudra means "found long life" or "life of long days". The tale of Ziusudra is known from a single fragmentary tablet, written in Sumerian, and published in 1914 by Arno Poebel.[1] The first part deals with the creation of man and the animals and the founding of the first cities - Eridu, Badtibira, Larak, Sippar, and Shuruppak. After a missing section in the tablet, we learn that the gods have decided to send a flood to destroy mankind.
The god Enki (lord of the underworld ocean of fresh water and Sumerian equivalent of Ea) warns Ziusudra of Shuruppak to build a large boat - the passage describing the directions for the boat is also lost. When the tablet resumes it is describing the flood. A terrible storm raged for seven days...
I would have let Noah build his Ark and then when the floods came I would have knifed the old twat and took the Ark off him. Amazing that all them people simply didn't try and take over the ark. They simply stood around and watched Noah sail off and then awaited their fate.
I've been trying to decide who was my favorite Brit: Richard Dawkins or Jeremy Clarkson. I think the whole TMNT bit put Clarkson slightly in the lead.
I've never heard of a Dawinist who argues don't use the bible to prove creationism. What they do argue is that the bibles version of events (basically made up fairy tales) do not correspond in anyway with scientific observation made by the intellectual effort of some brilliant human minds. Therefore the bible's version of events can only be the figment of the human imagination.
However I do argue that saying the bible proves God exists because it says so and it ins infallable as it was written by God... that's illogical so that tickettosucces might be what that argument was about?
I'll warn you now if you are of the Kent Hovind mentality and start to argue that science hasn't proved anything, or argue that all the eminent scientist don't know what they are talking about, I will simply block you as an ignorant creationist time waster.
evoltuinsit say: "don't use the Bible to prove creationism" I propose something to Darwinists: "don't use the origin of species or the descent of man or any other darwinist books to prove your theory"
f you attempting to argue that science has nothing offer to our understanding of our place and origin in the universe then the bible and all it's twaddle about creation certainly has nothing to add to our understanding. The bible and belief in god or gods are obviously the figment of the human imagination. Come off it you expect me to believe in Noah''s Ark! It might as well have been written by the brothers Grimm.
My name is Noah and I would like to explain how but it might take awhile. You see in the UK they used to make huge Oil tanker and military vessels out of steel and they would have to employ thousands of men. Now if they had of bought my book Noah's guide to ship building they could have got one man to do the job and saved a hell of a lot of money.
First of you need to go to your local DIY store and buy a good saw and a black & Decker work mate, a hammer and some nails. While you are doing this ask your wife and sons to start rounding all the species you need to take on board. See it's simple when you know how.
Ok. Now I mad at him. How could he insult the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, heros in a half shell turtle power!. I grew up with those guys. And they are coming out with a new movie.
One of my proffesors has come up with the term "imagineering" for using imagination to problem solve. We mostly discuss it in a way of people's use of maps, which is basically how people can interperate visual information.
I can't see your problem with his statement. At least he is admitting that we have to wait for science to provide an explanation to how the ballooning of the brain happened. Of course a creationist will simply say God. But I have no time for tooth fairy arguments. You might as well read stories by the brothers Grimm and believe they really happened. Their stories must be true because they are written!
00:12 dawkins says "it has to be largely guess work"..but people will probably accept what he says as fact none the less..then he says "about 3 million years ago......"....did you invent a time machine and not tell anyone mr dawkins??
Godwin's Law does not apply to discussions directly addressing genocide, propaganda or other mainstays of the Nazi regime. Instead, it applies to inappropriate, inordinate, or hyperbolic comparisons of other situations to Hitler or Nazis. In my opinion because the discussion is related to the spreading of ideas, in particular harmful ideas, a reference to Hitler is the most appropraite example and thus does definetely not constitute an example of Godwin's Law.
Richard doesn't like TMNT?

So now that we know this, what can we do with it?
I think this is the question that baffles the religious, as they have searched for an answer, and were given one (satisfying, although untrue)
