Loooove this scene. I actually didn't watch the movie with so much attention until i read the book myself, so in love with this book and movie, btw, i think Macfadyen played his character very well, good as Firth
i dont really understand why the film is being bashed so often. ive read the book and seen the BBC series as well as the film and i can objectively say that although the film at times dramatises the story to a hollywood level, theres a lot of things (little details like the hand stretch) that i really really like. its just a different take on it. it certainly doesnt make the story worse
@joystixxify Well a lot of Austen fans criticize the film for these very little things that in reality would have never happened. Darcy would've never dared touch the hand of Elizabeth without a glove. That contact was way too intimate back then. He wouldn't have done it in private, much less in public.
@lpycb42 i know. you can say the same about the scene in which wickham and elizabeth talk (where she sits under the tree). that wouldn't have happened either. but if you take it for what it is, which is a more liberal take on it then you can still enjoy it i think. the heart of the story is still there. the US alternative ending however is just not cool lol im glad that wasn't actually put in the movie.
Great scene!!!! One of the reasons I enjoy this pride and prejudice version so much better than others is because of the chemistry between the characters, in my opinion it's much more realistic to what a 27 yr old man and a 21 yr old woman ( according to the book) would feel, unlike the 1995 version, in which I sense almost no feelings whatsoever ( although it is more acurate to the book).
@austen1800 Really? You sensed no feelings in the 1995 version? I felt so many feelings, repressed feelings which is mostly what the book is about. In the 1995 version, you constantly feel the struggle on both sides to contain their feelings for each other. It's amazing.
That happens to me too every time I'm around the girl I like...when shes around, I get so tense...its ridiculous really but I feel like shes sucking the air out of the room...its bizarre and very uncomfortable to try and make a good impression when Im feeling so constricted by here presence...and afterwards I do feel the need to stretch or shake that feeling of tension and anticipation.
It's an indescribable feeling of tension, in this case sexual tension. When a person is getting ready for an encounter we stiffen and tense up getting ready for it. In the sexual sense we are getting ready for what we want to happen. When that want is not fulfilled the tension can seem so heavy that you have to stretch to become more relaxed. Stretching his hand is a more discreet way of coping. It shows his true nature with his body language without him actually saying anything. Endearing!
Awwww.... Her hands are so tiny compared to his!
