It might be uncomfortable for them but it shouldn't be painful. Its best to avoid holding them by the scruff of the neck if possible, and if you must never for a long period of time. Ive got 3 robos, 1 is unsocial and doesn't like being handled so i leave him alone. My 2nd hammy is getting too old to be handled and luckily my 3rd is very social and loves to be played with. Some hammies are social and some aren't, its just the luck of the draw.
