@binarystar21 Interesting comment. Why did you rate Sabotka so much? I dont think i could take him seriously enough half the time because he kept me in mind of andy belfleur from True Blood
@mrevilpants maybe he overstated it a bit, but D'Angelo, Sobotka, "Bunny" Colvin, they are all practicly victims of the constant failing of the sysyem, and are the only people trying to change it... and Frank is maybe the most honest of the all characters, a true working man, completly selfless, and like most of the characters a "criminal" not by choice, but by necessity... thats my (uninvited) two cents :)
@sevensixsixtwo He is willing to change things, but not at the cost of losing voters and his job as a mayor... that there is one significant difference... Carcetti is ultimately motivated by his personal ambition and goals, just like McNulty, and i don't mean that as moving through the ranks, i mean that as being the best detective in the unit and ALLWAYS solving the case
Everyone who thinks The Wire is the shit when it comes to TV and HBO, go back and watch Oz and Rescue Me and watch Third Watch too. Third Watch wasn't on HBO, but if you want to know what it's really like to be a first responder, watch that show. It got a lot of critical acclaim, but not enough viewers.
Anyone who thinks Oz was gay, go get your sexuality checked. If you can't watch it without getting hard, that's the the show's fault.
@bahramf real talk, oz was the most disturbing entertaning show i ever watched. and the whole naked thing just proves how real it is.. this is prison we talkin about, not disney land
I just started watching the wire a couple months ago. The whole way through the second season I was thinking how much better the first season was, and all the crap starts raining down in the episode with this song... even better than the first. Phenomenal show, and perfect choice in music for the episode.
Frank Sobotka would be appalled... he thought the unions were gettin busted back in '02??? Thank God he's not alive to see this political jerk off in Wisconsin tryin to make himself somethin by destroying the right of the worker
Awesome, I am currently watching the complete series of the wire on dvd, and heard this song and I got up and started dancing Greek ( I am Greek), I couldn't believe such beautiful music would be played on HBO, what a great series!! Stelios Kazantzidis parents are from the same area my dads parents are from in Pontus. Now Northern Turkey.
I was just dancing and crying, this music kills me!!!

@sertsu24 Efige Efige means she is gone , (she is gone i have lost her i am asking for her and wondering in the streets) and many more from the biggest Greek voice ever.
That's so great to hear my friend!!. I am Greek; and it's very moving to read that the music of our beloved Stelios crosses passed linguisitc/cultural barriers, and connects straight to the heart:). He's saying.."Ena sidero anameno eho stin kardia; ine I thikiso agapi pou me tirana"..meaning.."I have steel on fire in my heart; it's my love for you; and it torments me". "Efige"="she's gone".
it shows that music is a universal language. Me being an African American and just appreciating pure good music by a different language and culture. it speaks volumes
It makes very happy to connect with people through the beauty of the gift of a great musician/person like Stelios. I'm a musician as well; and am very deeply influenced by African American music like Steveie Wonder, Miles Davis, Wes Montgomery, Maxwell, etc. All soulfull music is of the same God:)
Dear God MrGeorgiep. . .your uncle is Kazantzidis??? Stelios wasn't even Elvis. You simply can't understand how important that guy was to a lot of people not just in Greece! There are Greeks living in Australia who play his records like they're brand new, they mean something to people, they talk about human experience. My grandfather is one of them and having grown up with it, I love it too (my grandad got to sing with him once). It's HONEST music from a very modest human being. he was god!
Oh awesome. . . another fundamentalist. Firstly buddy, when balanced people say that someone is 'god' they mean it figuratively. . not literally. Secondly 'god' with a lower case 'g' is simply a word that describes something or someone that is all powerful (or talented). . . not the same as 'God' in upper case which is obviously what you're reffering to. I used the word god twice, go check. I honestly CANNOT stand people like you who make everything about religion when commenting. Get a life!
the best series i've ever seen!!! HBO has always had high standards in its productions!!!SOPRANOS,BAND OF BROTHERS!! i'm greek and this song suprised me when i was watching that episode!!
AGREED! The Wire is unbelievably great. I don't watch alot of television myself because there honestly isn't that much "type" of shows or movies I like. I'm picky I guess. But the wire is just 1 of them shows that portrays so much everyday realism in an entertaining fashion that it's just hard to explain.
You named a couple of my favorites as well that I watch over and over on a regular basis. Sopranos I haven't seen all of yet but i'm on season 6 episode 4. Almost done! Great show as well.
@gerasilaos now how greek are u, if this is the only thing that made an impression??? the first greek tune in in tfhe backround was his as well, damn i got shocked, and i am bulgarfian.... peaced to all, but as theyr say in the series, i9'm not even greek...! So they "macedonian",Bulgarian, Albanian or fuxking serbs, LOOOOOOOOOOLLL
@Tarikatlar i dont understand the point of your comment...i just said that i didn't expect to hear a greek song in an american tv series(and yes i know that the music heard at the cantine was greek)....now for the last phrase of yours i don't know what you're trying to say....In your opinion what thing should make an impression to me?????TARD
@AGE0FQUARREL I've watched some episodes of that series.I liked some of them but I found it a little bit depressing and ''heavy'' ...I reckon that it has very interesting characters though so I might give it a second chance! :D
Thanks for the translation. I'm an American that don't speak a word of Greek, & even though I can't understand the words to this song.......I just like the feel & sound of it. I could listen to this day.
One of the best songs ever to be soundtracked to a TV scene. The eastern melancholy in the song really highlights the tragedy of the fate of the Sobodka character.
@merkowaty1 Greece is in many ways more similar to the Near East (Turkey, Syria, Israel-Palestine, Egypt, etc.) than it is to Western Europe. Music and food, for instance. Not in every way, but it definitely is not simply a "Western" country.
