I never knew about these old shows growing up, so I have no nostalgic attatchment to them, but I actually enjoy G2 a little more than G4, but G1 will always be my favorite. As for G3... The original looks fine. The theme is too girly for my liking, but I watched part of the episode with the shadow stealers and the creepy zebra. It wasn't as awful as people say, especially since we're talking about AN 80S CARTOON.

But Generation III....? ........I probably shouldn't say anything about that. :p

@TheCharleyJay If you're going to watch one of the 80s MLP shows, Rescue at Midngiht Castle is the one you want. Bright Lights (the one you watched) was decent, but The Return of Tambelon was better.

And with G3, the REALLY early specials were not awful. The stories were dull, but the presentation was good and the art didn't get obnoxious until later. Ultimately, they DO hold entertainment value. And Sunny Daze is awesome. Best G3 pony.

It's insanely awesome, and a must-watch for every fan of FiM (you'll see a crap ton of parallels with the Nightmare Moon story). Plus Rescue at Midnight Castle is, as kids cartoons go, extremely dark, depressing and epic. SPOILER: they kill the main villain, Tirek. Outright-freaking-KILL.

I've gotta say...for as much as I love FiM, the Tales concepts used in FiM were in general handled much better in tales. For example, compare the FiM episode "The Ticket Master" to the Tales episode "And the Winner Is....". I don't know about you, but scalping the tickets for pizza strikes me as a much more practical ending than having the supreme overlord of your world give you five extra tickets just because you had a bit of mental stress.
