The critics who put down Ian Hunter, and particularly this beautiful song of his, are a bunch of idiots! I'd like to see one of them write a song like this, or any other. Music critics are people who have no talent to play or write but somehow feel qualified to judge those who do, especially if they a some kind of university degree. Ian is one of the great underrated musicians of his era and still rocks.
Trudi was Ian's second wife then? Great and heartfelt song in any case. I used to listen to it after breaking up with a girlfriend whose daughter, Jessica, I had become close to. Greg G.
Has anyone ever written a sadder or truer line than, "the wise man knows why he cries"? Since Mick Ronson died Ian knows for sure why he cries. Ian is not a Buddhist but he has known the first truth of the Noble Ones all his adult life. The sadness of the human condition can be cantilevered by hope, can be mitigated by love but indeed, the wise man knows why he cries. Greg Gibbs Portland
Waterlow was written for Ian's daughter Tracie who he would take to Waterlow Park in London. He wrote it when he was going through the divorce with his first wife. It is so sad, but very beautiful.
The "unsucessfull" Wildlife album is an absolute classic.Just shows how much the so called critics know.
Makes you wonder how many other classics never made it just because some pompous music know it all slated it in preference to the latest Gary Glitter LP.
One of, if not, the most beautiful song he ever wrote. Never thought I would ever see him perform it live. MottOne, thanks a million for posting this from "Strings Attached" DVD.
Still the man.

Out of Ian's softer ballads, the ones I like best are 1) Rest in Peace 2) Sea Diver 3) Waterlow (version on the Wild album).
