I'm not really using anything special. For simple sketching I try to keep away from crazy brush settings that might slow down your response speed. The sketch brush as an elliptical shape to it so it feels/looks more like a pen. This fill brushes have a little texture in there to give some grain, that also feels nicer to work with. I'm using a Wacom Cintiq, which is really nice to work with.
also, a tip from me to you would be to work fast with big shapes and broad strokes. Go in light and fast then when you feel like the lines are in the right place go in a tighten it up. Keep a distance from the image so you get a good view of the total thing. Getting in too close is a bad idea.
