A friend here on Maui gigs around the islands (both Maui and Big Island) playing both the Stick and Warr guitars - Joe Conti. Cool instruments. This studio looks like Barefoot (as in Taylor) Studios. I think the "Specialized" water bottle - for bike riding - gives it away.
I also own a polycarbonate Stick, but I'm not selling it. Like Levin, I mostly play the bass side of it. Since you tap it and it's tuned in fifths, you get quite different patterns and sounds from it than from a standard bass guitar. It's fun to make it sound "normal" and then suddenly play these weird intervals.
no i dont think you did look at the very beginning of the video and he says he favors the 6 STRINGS BASS STRINGS its basically a bass but the guitar strings are at the higher end my 6 string has a guitar string on it does that make it a 5 string bass a 1 string guitar NO its mostly a bass and BASS PLAYERS use it so its a bass guitar
Actually, it's got 12 strings (some Chapman Sticks have 10), and where do you get the idea that only bass players use it? More than just bass players use the Chapman Stick, Levin just happens to be A bass player who uses it, and plays it more like different kind of bass. Most Stick players don't do that.
@Casey: Cool that you got Tony to play a session. The man's a genius.
As to the "why Tony doesn't use the six guitar strings much?" the answer is I think he doth protest a bit too much here. There are plenty of Crim songs where Tony's playing a rhythm part, e.g., Waiting Man. It's even more apparent in his solo material from World Diary or In the Caves of the Iron Mountain.
I owned a Stick for about 2 years. Finally gave up. The hardest thing by far that I ever tried to play. So difficult it was not even fun to practice. Kudos to anyone with the patience and perseverance to master it.
But it was cool because I sold it for $250more than I paid.
That was shite compared to the KC stuff.... He just wants to fuck the girlie and who could blame him when she's about 16 and he's fifty odd! Bravo Tony.... get ball deep in the spunker....
i had seen a youtube video of casey desmond some time ago. i had never heard of her or heard any of her music. it didn't really appeal to me, but that's not to say it wasn't good. i want to know how she and mr. tony levin got acquainted and what drew him to her music.
I can echo that Tony, for all his "legendary status", is the most down-to-earth guy I've met. He signed my ancient copy of Road Photos from 1986 and he talked to me like he was one of my co-workers. He and Pat Mastelotto are very very cool (and funny... especially regarding Fripp!).
I've read in an old mag can remember when.He mentions that he doesn't need more than 3 strings on a bass.A contradiction of a sort when he plays the chapman.
Actually, the 3-String Bass was custom-made for him when he plays his "Funk Fingers" (Percussion Sticks carved to fit onto his fingers with rubber-coated ends that bounce off the strings for a particular tone - search YouTube for an example) and having the wider spacing of a 3-string was easier to play that style.
Unfortunately, that bass along with a number of other classic and important instruments to Tony was destroyed when his storage building at his home burnt down.
As someone greatly influenced by Tony growing up to become a semi-professional bassist, he's certainly more than amazing enough for me. So much of *my* style comes from him: choosing the right time to play melodic lines, beautiful fretless choices or percussive parts instead of a flurry of fast wanking... plus if you've ever met him he's just a classy human being.
Since others are doing so I'd offer my services as a bassist should you need one... but you've got Tony frakkin' Levin! Damn. :P*
He may not be the "greatest" Stick player (I've seen Greg Howard multiple times) but it can't be denied that he's brought the most musicians *by far* to the Stick. From Crimson to Peter Gabriel to Liquid Tension Experiment to his own solo material, quite literally thousands have said "What is that odd Instrument he's *NOODLING* on?" and decided to give it a try.
He's St. Tony of Woodstock, Patron Saint of the Chapman Stick. :D
Wow. I wish I could twiddle my fingers and make awesome noises happen. Tony's brilliant. It's good to see you working with such a high calibre of talent, Casey. Everyone should have such tasty noodles to chew on.
I've seen Tony in many different projects over the years, and he never ceases to amaze and astound me with his overall musical PRESENCE on stage and in the studio. Casey, your vocals are transcendant of all genres, meaning: you RULE! If you ever need an all-purpose drummer, shout at me, and I'll shout back... :)
you can contact me if you want some heavy metal guitar work done. can't really explain my style because i'm still developing it but i'm alright i guess. i can send you a few improvisation tracks if you want. message me if you're interested
Hahaha, it's ok, he's the master chef if you know what I'm saying. Thanks for the good words. This will be available in 2009 sometime. I'm making music videos for my EP, then finishing my album.
I've seen Tony a few times what a top bloke and fair play a great instrument too. If you want a bass that's more conventional than this but sounds as wicked check out a WAL BASS.Chapmans take a while to master.
I NEED That album!

@Hoppus217 No, I don't.
I'm only selling my chapman stick via internet to buy a custom instrument (my 14th musical instrument), because I have a real life as musician.
I've seen you use internet to puke shitty comments. I insist: Get a life!!!!!

Or possibly because he played this standard model for many years before the Bass stick came out and is just used to it.
SotR59 2 years ago
He does use the guitar side, he just doesn't focus on it.
Listen to King Crimson's "Sartori In Tangier", he's playing a guitar rhythm along with the bass line, with Belew on drums and Fripp the lead.
