I know they haven't explained this in series but I think Locke is a reincarnated version of the man in black, the humanity that was taken from him when entering the cave. Thats called reading too much into word usage. Jimmy Kimmel used the wrong choice of words, but he was asking if Locke was the Man in Black, and they said NO.

Basically, the Man in Black and the Smoke Monster are two seperate things, despite that the show is indicating teh exact opposite. Aside from the loophole conversation, the Man in Black and Smokey being the same makes no sense.

The Smoke Monster/Jacob's Nemesis inhabits the body's of everyone who dies on the the island or crashes on the island already dead. this is a choice, tho (he isn't required to). so, since john locke, christian shepard, yemi, possibly sayid jarrah, etc were dead on the island, they can now be inhabited. THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT THEY CAN COME BACK TO LIFE, OR ARE ALREADY LIVING AGAIN. it simply means that the smoke monster/Jacob's nemesis knows everything they knew, and has their body.

I think Jimmy just worded his question about Locke really poorly, and was only wrong on a technicality. In the original timeline, Locke is dead, no two ways about it. The man whom we had believed to be Locke is the man in black, as shown by his interactions with Jacob and Richard. And this episode confirmed that the man in black is the smoke monster, explaining how he is taking Locke's form. So no, the man in black isn't "possessing" Locke, but he is in fact taking his form.
