What did it have? Bluing? That stuff they used to use in the old days to get white laundry whiter? Or did it have Borax in it, like the commercials Oh Fab I'm glad there's lemon freshened borax in you.
Thats a clothes wringer on that washing machine, you ran the clothes threw, then ,out to the clothes line and hang them up. I spent many a day following Mom while she hung them out and brought them in,even in the winter. frozen pants ,you could stand them up against a wall . And then women had to iron all that stuff too ! Thats why it was laundry day, it took all day! MY MEMORIES FROM AROUND 1954 OR 55.
In 1952, no self-respecting man would be caught dead--or alive--near a washing machine! (LOL) And compared to what detergents promise today, a "livelier white" sounds so innocent!!!
This usually appeared on "THE COLGATE COMEDY HOUR", "STRIKE IT RICH" and other Colgate-Palmolive-Peet sponsored series at the time...note the spot's running time: 1:34. There was a different "yardstick" back then at to how long a sponsor's message could last (especially during the "COMEDY HOUR")...
Damn right! Get those shirts clean you lazy excuse making excuse for a wife!

My mother bought that same wringer washing machine in 1952. I think it came with a free box of Tide packed inside the washer drum.

I like the way the woman said: "How can I get his shirts white? Unless I BLEACH THE LIFE OUT OF THEM?" These old commercials are awesome!
