  • With the exp. pedals, do they need their own button? I'm guessing so? So activate then wah right?

  • @JerryBeatFreak

They need a button because the effect style is decided and tweaked at that button. You need a button to choose if the pedal will control volume or wah or length of your delay time or tremolo functions or whatever. The pedal is like a pedal knob that you control with your foot. The user still has to call up a "pedal style" for the expression pedal to work.

  • I wish I found this M9 'review' about an hour ago; you answered most of my questions in about 10 seconds of video. Thanks for posting and for answering comments!

  • @roufler

Thanks....I think that Line 6 really thought this pedal out very well. I don't mind high gain tones but it seemed to me like there were one hundred M9 Videos on YouTube where guys play with lots of gain and do the U2 "multiple echo" tones. The M9 does a whole lot more.....it does so many classic pedal tones. I had to do a tutorial for old farts like me! Have a great day, John

  • Can you use this line 6 m9 in wherever amp and sound the same or jus in defined amps???

  • @drksthec

The M9 works with any amp.....just like any effects pedals will work with many amps.

  • Best demo of the M9 on youtube! Thanks mate :)

  • @Crispy9619

Thank you very much. Very kind of you.

    John

  • is it plastic???

  • @slashg21

    Metal - solid

  • Thanks, this was a really helpful demo!

  • @metalgtrfreak

    Thanks. You're welcome.

  • I have a Pocket Pod. I plug in my iPod and guitar and headphones and learn songs late at night. The Pocket Pod is a great practicing gadget.

The M9 is many levels superior to the Pocket Pod, The M9 Models specific famous stompboxes, You get hundreds of pedals in one box with the M9. The M9 is lik a bigger tool box

  • I have to take my words back. I recently bought an Artec param eq near 50 bucks and it's pure garbage. You are right about the price. One thing is stopping me from buying an M9 is because I also have a Pocket Pod from Line 6 and I just don't like how it sounds. Sorry asking so much. Is this M series superior ?

  • Thanks. The M9 seems great with lots of tweakabilities. A little pricy at 399...

  • @dekzan - I think the price is very fair. How far can you get buying separate stomp boxes for $399? 6 average pedals at $80 each would cost $480. With the M9 you have hundreds of pedals and a tuner and a Looper pedal for $399. I think the M9 is a strong value. I have two pedal boards with separate pedals. I have about $700 in pedals on the less expensive pedal board. It adds up quickly. It;s easy to spend $400 on a looper.

The M9 is a good buy.

  • The Line6 site says u can play 3 effects at once plus 3 in the deck. Doyou know what that means ?

  • @dekzan -

There are 6 pedals on the M9 that you can program in any way that you choose.

You can use up to 3 of these chosen pedals at one time.

  • Were you playing "7 Chinese Brothers" and "Hungry Like the Wolf"? I wish you were my neighbor!

  • @jpatrickmccabe - Yes! Guilty as charged. 36,832 views and you're the first to call me out on my 80's fetish! I graduated from college in 1986 and gigged in a cover band. I don't even know why I played those songs when I recorded the video. Just random songs that live in my head. REM is ok but Duran Duran??!!......(oh the shame).......

You got me! I saw your post verbiage on my iphone and turned beet red in the face.

You got me! I'm smiling. Have a great day. John

  • @studio1087 Reckoning is my fav REM record and the 80's were great! Maybe I'll hear some Violent Femmes in another one of your vids. But on track: Great video here. I'm getting an M9 and this answered some questions. Thank you :)

  • It could make a difference. I like my tuner and compressor toward the front of the board. I like reverb and tremolo toward the end..

  • The pedal has its settings from left to right (A Effects to C effects). Will the sound output make a different if i rearrange it from right to left (C to A)?

  • Can be turn on/off the 3 effects at same time with a single one stomp like a normal analog stomp box? :)

  • can it be mixed with other pedals?

  • @wizardroolz It has an input and output just like any other pedal. You can chain pedals before it or after it. I'm partial to a couple of overdrive pedals that I like to place in front of the M9....it's easy. Lots of people place M9's on pedal boards with other pedals because the M9 is small and it fits. Pedals are great with the M9.

  • Thanks for doing a real review and explaining the actual functions of the pedal...not just soloing for 10 minutes like some others.

  • @scottgrattonmusic Thanks.....it's a well designed pedal. I wanted to do a video that was different. I appreciate the kind words!

  • Thanks. It's a lot of fun.

  • It sounds VERY nice! I have a GT-8 now...but I may go with an M9 or M13. I love the delays. Verrry nice.

  • Yes it does wah with the outboard pedal. I need to get one of those. I'll have to add that to the list!

  • does it do wah with outboard expression pedal "?

  • @rhykko77 yes. it has wah models and volume pedal models you can connect 2 expression pedals at once.

  • You can store up to six modulation effects and yes you can use three at once. You can program any pedal into any stomp position and you can use three pedals at one time.

You could put the same chorus pedal with different speed and depth settings in three positions and use all three versions of the same pedal at the same time.

The M9 is indeed true bypass - it doesn't suck tone. I have at least 10 of the actual pedals that the M9 models and the M9 is quieter than the real pedals,

  • Hello well done there.. I have couple of questions:

Can you store 3 different modulation effects, let's say chorus phaser and flanger,

and use them all three at the same time?

Can you also change the order of the effects? I mean the chorus first, the phaser second and the flanger third etc etc....?

I suppose the unit isn't true bypass, but does it suck too much tone?

  • I have an acoustic M9 tutorial posted on YouTube...search "M9 Acoustic".

For acoustic, my first pair of switches are a gentle tube compressor and a warm EQ (scooped mids).

Second pair or switches are a gentle multi-Chorus and a nice hall reverb.

Third pair are a gentle single echo/delay and a modulated gentle delay with about three repeats.

    Go gentle on the acoustic effects. Too much effect on acoustic is like putting ketchup on lobster. Acoustic is usually beautiful all by itself. (-;

  • Can you tell me what settings and effects you use for your Martins and acoustic? I just got one and really like how you describe how to use it. Seems a bit overwhelming at first but you simplified it. Thank you

  • It doesn't suck any tone in bypass mode and I have many of the old school pedals like a Dyna-Comp or TS9 or AD80 and the M9 is quieter and sucks less tone than many of the classic stomp boxes.

  • so does it suck any tone in bypass? i'm sure some patches suck tone like crazy... just my little curiosity :)

  • I like the M9....

    A. I love the size - it can slide into a guitar gigbag or small carry bag

    B. Three effects at once is about all I ever need - I often run my Timmy Overdrive or an old Tubescreamer in front of it - Overdrive plus three additional effects is all I would ever use.

I was going to buy an M13 and I wound up buying the M9 - the size of the 13 worried me - the 13 is really big - go look at them side by side.

  • m9 or m13?

  • You cannot step on one switch and activate a combination of individual effects or preset patterns,

You can turn individual effects off and on one at a time just like when you use individual traditional pedals.

  • can you make presets?

  • Yes...When you enter the looper you play whatever the last tone set up was.

You can let the looper loop over and over and you can switch back to the pedal board (while the loop is looping) and step on the pedals and change the tone of whatever you are playing live over the loop.

  • What happens with six knobs/screen when you switch to the looper? its just the last effect it was assigned to?

  • I would put the tone quality and ease of use of the M9 way ahead of the ME 70.

  • Boss ME 70 or Line 6 M9???

  • It's very warm......I've compared the Red Comp (Line 6) with my old Dyna Comp and the Screamer (Line 6) with my older TS9 Tubescreamers and the M9 is very warm.

The M9 analog delays are fantastic - warm.

  • How does the sound quality compare, does it seem very digital ?

  • Thanks man......you know what?? I have a T-Rex Gristle King Overdrive/Boost that I'll give up when I'm dead. I use the Gristle King and a Ross compressor clone in front of my M9 but I still love the M9.

Traveling with an M9 and two pedals is so much easier than traveling with 8 pedals on a big board and the scene function on the M9 lets you set up so many user possibilities.

The M9 & M13 have raised the bar. I think that Digitech and Boss multi-effcets sound like kiddee toys.

  • Awesome demo :)!

I still doubht if I can get the great sounds out of it I wish, I have a nova delay, so I would use i tmostly for distortions and flanger etc...

  • Thanks. You're welcome. The M9 really copies a lot of the pedals that I grew up with. It was a fun demo to make.

  • one of the best reviews i've seen here! THANK YOU

  • thats my hand mmmkaay!!

  • The "Red Comp" in the M9 sounds just like my MXR Dyna Comp but the MXR pedal produces more noise.

The "Analog Delay with Modulation" in the M9 sounds just like my MXR Carbon Copy.

I sold 13 pedals on ebay after buying the M9. The ebay pedal sales paid for the M9 and a new Larrivee Parlor guitar.

I still have about 15 pedals (I've played guitar for 35 years; pedals accumulate) but if I were starting from scratch, the M9 would make a lot more more sense than buying a dozen pedals.

  • I would buy the XT Live if I was more interested in amplifier models.

I would buy the M9 if I were more interested in pedal variations.

I think of the XT Live as a modeling amp in a floor unit.

I think of the M9 as a powerful stompbox unit.

  • Thanks for your prompt reply.

So you think it's great enough to sell off your pedals and rely on this alone?

I always seem to notce the emulators are only about 60% close to what they are trying to mimic.

You can honestly say it's so close that you can play with the EQ and get it spot on and say goodbye to the original pedals?

  • If you've never used one should you start with the XT Live, or just jump to the M9. Also, what options for wah or volume pedal?

  • You could do it two ways....

    1. If your Spider III is large enough that it has channel switching you could set up a dirty sound and a dirtier sound on the amp. Use the amp's footswitch to change channels and use the M9 for stomp box effects.

    2. Take the first pair of footswitcheds on the M9 and set one dirty and it's mate dirtier - then you still have the other four switches for effects.

My son has the 15 watt Spider III and that unit in single channel. What Spider 3 do you have?

  • i have the 75 Watt. Disregard what i said before though, i figured out settings and its exactly what i need. My amp is still set on clean. Thanks though.

  • I bought one today. Its fun so far, but i want to switch between clean and distorted tones with the same effects. Its running through my Line 6 Spider 3 amp. Do i need some sort of a pedal that will work with the amp to allow switching from clean to heavy tones?

  • @Scottieonfire I recommend a new amp.

  • I have used the M9 with my Fishman Loudbox 100's effects loop and it sounded fantastic. In that application I used Martin and Larrivee guitars all with K&K Pure Pickups (acoustic application - fussy stuff) and it sounded beautiful.

I run my M9 straight into the front input on my electric guitar amps...simple...no problems....very nice.

You wouldn't have any problems running an M9 or M13 through an effects loop.

  • How does the m9 sound through and amps effects loop???

  • Switch banks???

I'm sorry, I want to help but I don't understand the question.

If you have a seperate stand alone effects pedal plugged into the input on the M9, the stand alone pedal functions the way any stand alone pedal would and you can still use all the features on the M9.

When I place an overdrive pedal in front of the M9, I can use the seperate overdrive and three additional M9 effects all at the same time.

Does that help? I'm not sure if I'm answering the question.

    John

  • The M9 does not have the effects loop that M13 does but the M9 does have midi in and out.

I have never had a propblem running pedals into the input on the M9. An effects loop can be helpful but I have never had a problem running a stompbox into the input on the M9. I have a BYOC OD2 overdrive & boost pedal (2 button OD/boost pedal) that I have used with the M9 and the two unites sounded great together.

Line 6 has great photos of the back side (in/outs) of the M9 & M13 online.

    John

  • thanks for the demo. can you also use individual stompboxes together with the m9? and if you can, can you also program the signal chain much like the m13?

  • There are 6 pedal switches thar can broken out into 6 unique user banks or scenes. You can therefore have 36 total pedals. Each pedal switch can bring up 6 effects. You could arrange 36 variations of one pedal if you wanted to.

  • Thank you for your reply.

    I just don't understand if ON A SINGLE SWITCH, let's say the A1, I can have i.e. a Big Muff + a Booster + a Delay

  • You can't do that. You cannot press one switch and have the one switch bring out a preset blend of three effects mixed together.

The Digitech RP line will let you combine up to 9 effects (I think it's 9) and you can step on one button to hear the whole selection of mixed pedals come forth from one button.

The M9 works the way 6 individual stompbox pedals would work.

Sorry I didn't understand you question at first.

    John

  • Thanks a lot John. That was exactly what I wanted to know. Very good review, by the way.

  • @studio1087

So you don't switch banks or how does this work?

  • It seems it's not possible to save presets with more than one pedal sound. Is it true?

  • I didn't like the complex programming and I thought that the sound quality was poor compared to individually selected classic pedals.

  • Can I ask... why you make fun of mult-fx before you had the M9?

I mean... I did too, but I forgot my reason. I like multi-fx now haha

  • Pretend that you have set each of the 6 pedal buttons with a sound that you like....you can save the group setting as one "scene"

You can call this set of sounds "Scene A"

You can then reset all 6 pedal buttons to new 6 sounds and save that set as "Scene B"

You can organize 6 scenes total and recall any of the preset scenes by pushing a button.

I have two full scenes of sounds that work well with my acoustic guitars. I have two scenes for single coils and two more for humbuckers.

  • @studio1087

This... actually answered all my questions. Thanks!

  • Hi!

You can explain work (a work principle) "scenes"?

  • Comment removed

  • Short Story - I went to Guitar Center with a "$50 off one item priced over $350 coupon" I was going to buy the M13.

The M13 is HUGE. It's crazy HUGE. The M9 will fit on a pedal board with 3 or 4 other pedals. This will sound silly but I would buy 2 M9's before I would buy an M13.

I love my BYOC OD2 and I just ordered a Timmy pedal from Paul Cochrane. I talked to Paul last week and my Timmy will be ready in March.

I'm saving real estate space for a few beloved pedals.

    M9!

    John

  • A. You can use the M9 in an effects loop.

    B. The M9 has midi in and out.

    C. I don't think that you can run overdrive to the amp's front and the other effects to the loop.

    D. I don't know about panning the effects. Go to Line 6"s web site - they have a lot of technical info. I just play guitar > BYOC OD2 (overdrive) > M9 > Fender Deluxe Reverb or Fender Princeton. My application of the M9 is simple compared your your potential application.

  • hey thanks for the info... it helped out alot! the m13 has the loops, and i could map it out the way i was thinking... no one else would tell me if this thing had the loops built in... thanks man. i would get the m13 but its too big for me, im trying to simplify my rig, getting rid of entire pedalboards and footswitches with this little guy. i should just use my actual ts9 and wah in front, m9 in paralell loop, and noise gate in the series loop... no footswitch needed then! tiny package goodness

  • hey man! i was thinking of getting one to use with the carvin v3, but i want to use it through my effects loop for mod and delay, i was wondering if it would work that way... also if it has a midi jack, it can select my channels for me if its in scene mode... does it have a midi jack? also wondering if you can map it out to run a tubescreamer sound to the front of the amp and the other effects through the loop? and if so, can you pan the effects through the left and right loops? thanks

  • The effects loop allows you to insert other pedal or rack effects into the signal chain without running your guitar straight to the other effects. You can get better sound or less noise doing it hat way.

The expression pedal is a pedal that looks like a volume pedal that lets you change one of the pot values on the M9 with your foot...like making an echo longer or shorter by rocking your foot on a pedal connected to the M9.

  • I just bought an m9 i was wondering what exactally does the effect loop do/expression pedals do?

  • Thanks. This thing "wowed" me. They really made it easy...and it sounds right.

  • That was a very good demo. Thanks!

  • It's super easy to operate on the fly. It's the most intuative thing that I've bought in years. You might read the instruction book for 2 minutes the entire time that you own the thing.

The Looper is beyond easy. If you can tap your foot and count four beats you can do anything just looking at the words printed next to the footswitches.

Tele's! I have had at least one Tele in my possesion at all times for the past 31 years. A Tele will do anything. I have 3 now. I Love Telecasters

  • thinking about getting this for my superchamp XD.. is it pretty easy to opperate on the fly? it seems like you can store a lot of stuff in it.. playin a tele too : ]

  • It is very easy to push both buttons with one foot. Scenes are easy with your feet

  • Is there a way to control scenes with your feet?

  • I still have my Maxon OD9 and a BBE GreenScreamer, a few old compressors and my MXR Carbon Copy. I cleaned house and sold many pedals on ebay. I paid for the M9 and a Larrivee P03 Parlor guitar from the ebay sales. I did and acoustic demo with the P03 and the M9 (another video).

    The M9 is neat.

  • Nice review. I've spent a lot of time debating whether or not to move on from my boxes full of analog pedals. I think you've just convinced me to go for the M9. Thanks

  • ok thank you i think ill buy this it looks very good and simple and no menus so it looks very good

  • I think that an experienced played would get a lot more out of it than a new player. I don't think a new player would know a Dyna-Comp from a CS-3 from a Keeley Comp from any Comp or a TS9 from a DS1 from a Timmy etc.

If you've played for a while you'll appreciate all the tones and you'll know how to tweak them.

I know about 8 guys who are gigging M9's and M13's including myself.

    It's a great tool. At $399 it's a bargain.

  • would you recommend this to a kind of experienced player?

  • I only use effects loops when pedals greatly reduce my tone. This thing is not a signal eater. I just go straight in.

I'm sure that it would be fine through an effects loop.

    Thanks.

  • hey there dude - I have a question. Have you used the M9 in a loop ? do you know if it sucks alot of level out when using through a loop ? It really seems like a great pedal man - many thanks Simon

  • You can set the compresor up any way you want. You can set any pedal in any position. I just assigned the pedals in the locations that I did because it works for me.

I may use my old Maxon OD9 pedal (Tubescreamer) for overdrive at some point and program a compressor and a boost on the first two buttons rather than compression and overdrive.

I still like my OD9. I could fit the M9 and 3 or 4 pedals on a small pedalboard.

    Lots of possibilities.

  • eerrrr i like my compressor on when i play lead, dont like the idea of losing comp when i go single lines, ill stick to my boss eh pedals. nice bit of kit otherwise

  • Not like it used to. I had a laundry basket filled with pedals aquired over 30 years. I just sold 13 of them on ebay and paid for the M9 and a new Larrivee Parlor Guitar

    Line 6 raised the bar.

This thing thing is the size of a Memory man. You could fit this and 5 more analog pedals on a typical pedal board. (That's part of the joy).

  • @scottagalt Five years ago, I would probably still agree with that statement. Digital is sort of becoming the future of audio that it always wanted to be, though. It's come a long way. The convenience factor with digital/midi gear is the biggest selling point for me.

With that said, though, I looked at your profile and noticed that your board is very similar to mine. PT Pro, Octaswitch (cool unit) and a bunch of pedals. However, I find myself grabbing my RP500 more and more lately.

  • True analog bypass....yes.

  • true by pass ????

  • The M9 is dead quiet.

The M9 Dynacomp is quieter than my MXR DynaComp.

The M9 Screamer is quieter than my Maxon OD9 Tubescreamer.

My crummy camera may be causing trouble. I recorded this with a cheap Flip camera. Flip cameras are really easy and fun but sound comes out very bright and thin on a Flip. Neat little $150 video camera but it is limited.

  • seems cool great demo.

    2questions

seems noisy when you put the comp on, is it noisy?

i have a verbzilla great sound but sucks tone

is it the same with the m9?

    thanks

  • Yes you can connect your own drive pedal. The M9 has an input and output jack just like a pedal. You can run additional pedals before the input or after the ouput as you would with any multiple pedal set up.

  • could you connect, your own drive pedals. There is not and send and recieve?

  • I´ve never been a big fan of multi-effects but this thing seems really good to me. Considering saving up money for this one, and replace some of my pedals with it.

It sounds good to my ears, and good review too (:

  • Sure. I want to try some acoustic stuff. I'll use a Martin and the T5. I said "verbzilla" down below....that was wrong....the patch is called "particle verb". It's really beautiful.

  • Could you post a video of the M9 and your Taylor T5?

    Thanks!

  • i do a lot of acoustic gigs too, have always used the DL-4, but the M9 has replaced it, and it's AWESOME! nice tutorial here.....dig it!

  • Thanks. I want to do another video with acoustic. Weird thing. I do coffee house acoustic gigs. I don't play electric other than just writing at home. I have some nice acoustics..a couple with Taylor Expression systems and a Couple Martins with K&K. I hooked the M9 up to a beat up Yamaha with a sound hole pickup and the reverbs and EQ's and mild delays were mind blowing. The verbzilla sounds like a string section behind the acoustic.

Electric guitar is only half the potential of the M9.

  • very useful video.. way better than the line6 ones

  • thanks
