Would not have wanted Clough to stay, he insulted the players in the best team Leeds ever had. Sure he worked a miracle at Forest but that does not mean it would have occurred at Elland Rd .
I'm a leeds fan but he was not given a chance. He may not have acted in the right way but if the players had seen past there own egos and actually accepted him we would have been possibly the best english club ever. For fuck sake the man decked roy keane with a punch. Now thats the man that would have made us the best. On a different note grayson is doing a damned fine job.
@lyngoodwin oh bollocks, cloughie was a brilliant man, he took derby and forest to heghts. could wegner, ferguson, manchini, or who ever, be great managers without the cash. NO WAY, revie, cloughie. paisley, shankly, THEY WERE REAL MANAGERS
Redredred. Absolutely Clough was a great manager, one of the best. I still would not have wanted him to stay at Leeds, thats my opinion, his attitude to the players he inherited was all wrong, we are talking about Bremner, Giles, Reaney, Cooper, Hunter, Gray, Lorimer, not some tin pot nobodies. You are a "Reds" fan ? I do not expect you to understand why I did not want him at Leeds. Best wishes all the same !
i support leeds...but i think he was right. not only do i agree with his philosophy on football and life but the players were on their way to past it anyway. they should have got shot of the fucking lot of them and let him start again. he would have had them world beaters
Leeds United had it hard both ways. In Europe many sides tried to kick Leeds United of the park in many of their European Ties. At home at one stage they were the biggest draw in English football, & every game was a Cup Final against Leeds United.
They were the Manchester United & Arsenal of their day. Say what you want about Leeds United, but they could play beautiful football & often did. Eddie Gray, Terry Cooper, John Giles, Peter Lorimer were all beautifully gifted footballers.
Another factor that led to Leeds United success was their love and inclusion of Scottish players into their side which allowed Scottish football fans to watch Leeds United more closely outside Scotland in regards to watching a English Football club at the top of the Old English first division.
Another factor to take in was that Leeds united were the first side to take over the Crown that Manchester United had achieved in a big way. They really were at the time England's biggest club, and many in Europe acknowledged that.
They were the first club in England to have every player being an "International" or playing for their country at International status.
Also because of the team only being the only team in one city they had a huge fan base.
Everyone seems to think that Leeds United were the only team that had hard players that would hurt you to win.
This is not the case. In the Old first division of the English Foot league you had Chopper Harris - Chelsea, Nobby Stiles - Manchester United. Tommy Smith - Liverpool, Tony Book - Manchester City, Alan Hunter - Ipswich Town, Peter Storey - Arsenal & the list continues.
Football that was played then was harder to win as Defenders were given the benefit of the doubt then they are today
You've all missed the point. He didn't hate Leeds, he hated their 'football'. Clough was a gifted, talented, skillful striker who was kicked out of the game at an early age. He never forgot a big, ugly centre-half called Bob Stokoe leaning over him as he writhed in agony after his career-ending collision with the Bury keeper telling him to 'get up'. So, as a manager he went on a mission to rid football of ugly, brutish cloggers and instead drag the game into the modern era. He succeeded.
well said. clough was motivated more than by winning trophies. revie was oldschool - he would have done anything to win - he bribed teams to throw games when leeds were in the old 2nd division - he was desperate to get them into the 1st. Revie was not that successful - they lost more finals than they won & only won the league twice in 10 years. AND no european cup. clough was the future but you cant expect the leeds fans to grasp that - they were only interested in leeds not football as a whole.
and lets face it - the thuggery is now controlled in football. im not pinpointing leeds in particular who also played very attractive football when they wanted to - it was widespread across lots of clubs. Clough was a brave man who wanted to see football played in a fair and gentlemanly manner and he took this belief with him throughout his career. he proved he was right too. pioneers are often misunderstood but without brian clough football would still be in the dark ages of thugs and cheats.
@richard brian clough a genius?maybe taylor who looked after the piss head and we liked being hated silly twat ..with Leicesters growing asian community your fan base will be non existant in 20 years Leicester r i p.
Brian clough was a football genius and im a bloody Leicester fan. Everyone hates Leeds scum, by the way how many points are we above the mighty Leeds now?
he hated Leeds and then became manager and carried on his hate to the players if he was that good he would have been England manager .Brian Clough beind drunk is a well know fact
only in his latter years - he hardly drank at all in the 70s and he had given up smoking - damned united got that wrong. some of the leeds players had reputations for being heavy drinkers and smokers too. you would often see bremner and charlton with fags in their mouths but that was the 70s. If you look at clough in 74 he looks fit and healthy and he was. The pressure of managemet took its toll on him as the years went by but hes not the last manager to take to the bottle.
This has nothing to do with trophies, it is to do with the fact that Brian clugh tried to change the winning formula Leeds United had set up based only on his feud with Don Revie. He should have never taken the job in the first place
Crystaltipps Did You Say Peter Taylor May Have Been Instrumental To The Cause I Thought They were a 50/50 Partnership ? Sorry Mate Never Even Managed England Soon Your Be Putting Him On A Par With Sir Alf......And He Only Won The World Cup........And The rift Was Caused By Cloughie And I Know That By Talking To People Like Norman Hunter, Eddie Gray, & Peter Lorimer They Should Know As They Were There !........ MOT
I believe England could of won the world cup with Clough as manager.....but because he was so outspoken against members of the FA comittee...he sadly never got the chance....only now do we realise that Clough was a genius.
Genius......Alcoholic With A Big Gob Thats Why He Got Sack From Leeds Brought Trevor Francis The Only Thing He Ever Did That Was Decent Or Maybe Luck perhaps It Was Peter Taylor That Was The Genius People Forget About Him And He Wasnt A|t Leeds.........MOT
Also I believe he was hounded out of Leeds by the ageing primadonnas (like Giles,Bremner),who refused to accept his methods, and caused a rift in the dressing room.He later went on to prove Leeds wrong as he had success with Nottingham forest that Leeds could never equal.Maybe Peter Taylor was instrumental to the cause, but Clough will always be remembered for his remarkable achievments, love or hate him.
crystaltipps - Clough insulted all the Leeds players, the worst being leveled at the injury prone Eddie Gray who was told that if he was a racehorse he'd be shot - a disgustingly insensitive comment especially as Clough himself had his own playing career ended by injury. . Is it any wonder they resented him? The whole 'player power' thing is a myth - the board sacked him, not the players. I do like Clough and admire his achievements (with Taylor), but he behaved like an idiot at Leeds.
It's also worth pointing out that a few years later Clough won the League with Forest losing only 3 games and gaining two more points than Revie had in his final season.
Despite his chances of winning the League better than Revie had been dismissed...Clough was right all along.
And whatever Leeds fans say about him, they missed out...and I'm very glad they did as I'm a Forest fan!
sgreenfly , ok , leeds were a great side but what had they won compared to what clough did at forest ? the side clough took over were past it and he wanted to break it up - quickly that's why he p****d them off so they would leave and he could build another dynasty like he did at derby the to a greater extent at forest. That could have been leeds !!!!
Clough was the right man for leeds at the wrong time-The point about Leeds been past it in "74 is wrong, they were that good they could have maintained the standard for 3 or 4 years at least-You don't go 29 games from the start of the season unbeaten if your crap (only 2 others have managed it in 34 years)and nearly all of that squad were still playing top leval football for years after Clough left -Revies Leeds broke up too early IMO but they still reached the euro cup final with Armfields help
I think that all these arguments and insults just shows that both of these great men had huge respect for eachother deep down although they wouldnt admit it.
What ? are you serious, if he hadn`t been a prick in the first place and made an effort straight from day one with regards the players then you might be right, how can you wait 3 days b4 meeting the players and then tell them they`d cheated their way to all their medals ? watch the saints gane in 72 to realise what a brilliant side they were already, probably better than man utd
