  • Plane weight less than 254 lbs - Pilot weight greater than 350 lbs.

I bet it really screams with horse racing jockey sized person at the controls.

  • Ain't nothing wrong with having a few toys to play with in life. This has to be great fun, build your own plane and fly it. Not for me though don't think I am that brave...Cheers..

    Wayne..

  • omg!gimee,gimee i want one .

  • Nice looking plane.

  • Whats the motor, Citroen 2CV, half a VW?

  • congrats - but i like the Airbike better

  • do you need a licence to fly these aircraft

  • @TheWisey1234

It depends... If you build it to plans it will meet Federal Regs for an ultralight. That means no license and no registration. (and no taxes)

If you are not careful it will not make weight (254 lbs) and it will have to be registered in the experimental category, which requires at least a sport pilot license. Training is not optional however in either case. The more the better, as always.

  • Jim Lee...did he fly hangliders back in the 90´s? Part of the US team?

  • Jim never flew hangliders. A few gliders though, when the engine stopped.

  • it seems like it should mow grass somehow, I like the design of this one, it looks like a natural flying machine.

  • I get nervous in a 172, Your either really brave or youve just been married a lot longer than me.

  • WOW!!!- that's fantastic!!

It looks like someone built it in a garden shed!!!

I'd really love to have a go in one of these but if i built one, i'm pretty certain that there wouldn't be a second flight!!!

  • great work... may i know what is the approximate construction cost??

  • The designer estimates 3 to 5,000. The prices on materials keep going up however.

  • What a great flying stick-and-rudder machine! Great work... great flying!

  • Honest questions: how many HP does the Better Half VW engine make? What size engines are used? 1.2 litre? 1.3? 1.5? 1.6?

  • These engines are in the 30 HP range. Most are 1/2 of the 1600 CC engine, but use 92 MM cylinders. That puts them somewhere around 900 CC.

  • It could do with some flipper things on the wheel spokes to make it more noisy

  • do you need a license to fly this?

  • Built strictly to plans, it will be a Legal Ultralight requiring no license or registration.

You will need training however, if you want to live to fly it more than once.

I recommend formal training to the point of at least being signed off by a CFI to fly solo in a certified tail wheel aircraft. Anything less is very risky

  • I do know how to fly I've flown a cessna 172 and a piper warrior before I know how to fly, its been my passion since I was a kid I just cant afford to "hang with the big dogs" I understand that private license would cost me $3,500-$5,000

  • @dan5142101 Thanks for the info

  • @dan5142101 would it still be considered an ultralight if it had a more powerful engine and floats?

  • Jim is not afraid of trees.

  • I'm blitzed with this video! Supercali...etc.

  • Just fucking awesome

  • Ah come on, the music is fine. Great flying Jim! Must be fun being a test pilot, risky too! Lol

  • very neat aircraft, and a great song to boot!

  • I just saw the video and I know the pilot Jim Lee. He flew with me back in the mid 80's. My friend had an ultralight dealership and I worked with him and built the planes.I would like to get in touch with Jim Lee if you know how. thanks

  • wow i love this vid!

    How much did you pay for this aircraft? {PLEASE REPLY}

  • Does life get any better ?? I love the 4-stroke and the music you put to this. Watching your face in the beginning made me think of a new quote..."A flyin' face is a happy face". Keep working on those smile wrinkles.....

  • oh hell yea,,,perfect 3 point landing,,,looks like one of mine,,,

  • Good work on the Guitar ! Neat sounding engine - beats h--- outta those screaming twostrokes !

    AceRobert

  • What does that plane weigh exactly? That's a 1/2 VW engine, right?
