hip hop wasnt invented in canada, it was invented in england. The incredible bongo bands cover of apache was originally recorded by a band called The Shadows from england.
The apache break is the genesis of hip hop that dj kool herc brought to the forefront
Check out the shadows on here and you can still hear some hip hop in it like sir mix alots jump on it etc
I generally dont comment, but found Nardwuar's interviews this evening and spent about 2+ hours watching all the hip-hop ones, and this was the best so far, mad respect to Questlove and of course Nardwuar!
Prince Paul also sampled Eugene McDaniels on "Nowhere to Run, Nowhere to Hide" by the Gravediggaz, a rap group with the RZA (from Wu-Tang), Frukwan (of Stetsasonic), and Too Poetic.
Great interview, I love how this guy catches people off guard with topics that they themselves are interested in.
Thats the very core of interviewing and it is rarely practiced to such a precise and humorous degree.
If MTV had VG's like this when they started the quality of music would be in my opinion encouraged to a much less commercial based aspect and more of a discovery of subtle influences from the past.
Sorry for ranting but I like this guy that much! :)
i get so proud when the nard blows cats minds with his records. and questlove is such a down to earth dude. great interview. and he does say "word" at the end.
it's not that hip hop actually started in Canada there just saying that a break that grandmaster flash used was recorded in canada but hip hop was officially born in the Bronx New York in Dj Kool Hercs' (aka the God father of hip hop) building1520 Sedgwick Avenue.. roughly around the year 1973.
Eugene McDaniels - "The Parasite" - headless heroes of the apocalypse (for anyone who want to hear the song that questlove is talking about
