This was a date movie for me. It scuppered the date.
It could have been an interesting new take on the old film, or a decent film of its own, but it's neither. It's just...a juvenile idea of what a clever social comment might be.
This Tom Paulin is the kind of guy that you see in a Monty Python skit...unreal! On the plus side that Julie woman is rather hot and I agree with her about the film even though I thought the film was funny, but I prefer the classic 1955 version.
These people are pinheads. As an American from the south I am continually amazed at how well the Coens do at nailing personalities and all the things that I take for granted every day. This movie is great. People from another country just aren't going to get most of the subtle humor
I think the critics here (in what you call 'another country') are a bit miffed that a remake was made of a classic British comedy at all. It's like sacrilege.
Mind you, a lot of of them probably haven't seen either one of them. I have seen both, the original many times. As a remake the Hanks film is appalling, but on its own it's quite good. You might want to watch the original but I suspect you would not understand its subtle humour. People from another country generally don't. Oh!
Look, I can hypothesise that the goings on in the pub in Eastenders is an analogy of Socratic debate in ancient Greece, and that would make it really hilarious and fun. But I know it's not, and therefore a piece of shit.
Film is open to interpretation, but I Tom Paulin's got ahead of himself here, I think.
Tom Pauline... Where is he getting this crap from? The only thing I agree with is the Bob Jones University joke. The Coen Brothers are extraordinary filmmakers but this was a HUGE misfire. They missed every joke that made the original so funny. Always rely on Mark Kermode.
Mark Lawson is such a Billy Bunter-esque overgrown speccy schoolboy, but am I the only person who loves that cuddly curmudgeon Tom Paulin, I love how he deliberately opposes every other opinion.
I love the remake. It's one of my favorite movies. Yeah go ahead, sue me.

But it's still smarter than Tom Paulin.

Tom Paulin is a hopeless pseudo-intellectual.
Mark Kermode actually knows what he's talking about.

Exactly. You can't claim to like a film simply because of a running joke about Bob Jones University

This film was brilliant. Very very funny. I have no idea why it's not rated much higher.
MaxReinsch 3 years ago
Because it's no where near as good as the original...
rherrick123 3 years ago 3
boohooo. It was still a very funny film in its own right.
MaxReinsch 3 years ago
Please watch the original, it's a real classic of comedy.
And as Kermode so rightly said, the remake isn't subtle in any way.

I love the Coens. I love Mark's look while waiting to speak. I don't care for the movie at all.
