I can't believe I actually get to see the real Lad in a home movie!! I read this book about 1,000 times as a girl, I am now 60 and still read it!! THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS. I love Lad!

Thank you so much for posting this magical video. The music is perfect. I read Terhune's books over andover as a child, dreaming of having an understanding with my dog the way he had with his... Thank you so much for sharing. There was a collie waiting when I came home from the hospital as a newborn and I have loved them since. Been reading about the Sunnybank Collies since I first started reading when I was 4 or 5.
Thanks for this video. Brought back memories of my now passed on collie. Unfortunately I am between collies right now- I can't wait to get another of these beautiful, loving friends.
Wow, what a great video! I live up the road from Sunnybank & was lucky enough about 10 years ago on a rainy afternoon to see what I believe to be the ghost of Bruce, one of Terhune's collie. It ignored us completely and walked with a purpose then disappeared into a field. We searched for it & it was gone and we should have been able to find it easily in the recently mowed grass. I will never forget that. When I later saw a picture of Bruce it had the same expression as this dog. Ghost dog?
This is so amazing!! I bought my first Terhune book and became an avid collector when I was only about 8 years old (about 15 years ago) - I found it in an antique/used book shop and it had a picture of a collie engraved on the front - I was spellbound from the first! This little film is such a lovely and unexpected treasure! Thank you, to whomever found and preserved it!
I live in Pompton Lakes and love to go sit at Sunnybank and try to imagine what it was like. I remember the rose gardent that is no longer there.. But it is still a beautiful park..
Thank you for sharing this wonderful footage! I read and reread all of his books as a child and loved and adored collies all my life. I have been blessed to have had 4 collies - my first was a Christmas collie I received my 5th Christmas. I named him Champ. I would grow up and have 3 more along the way - Courtney, Captain and Rebel. There is no collie in my life now, but my heart will always adore this breed.
I absolutely LOVED the video. Had no idea anything like this existed. I have 2 blue merle males collies (Max and Marley). I read and began collecting Terhune's books as a pre-teen. After reading his works, nothing but a collie would do! Sunnybank is my power place and favorite place to be. Thank you SO MUCH for making this video available for those of us who consider Sunnybank, the Collies, and the Terhunes as Sacred.
Our greatest dogs have been Shepherd mixes; but I've read the Terhune Collie books -- and find that they and the Alsatian lineage have much in common. Loved the books as my father always told me I would. Thank you for posting these fabulous clips!
this is an incredible video, I had no idea something like this existed, we have 2 collies now, this shows Terhune's genuine love for the dogs. Thanks!!!!
this is an incredible video, I had no idea that anything like this existed...we are owners of two collies, It was said that Terhune merely exploited the dogs without real affection, this is live disproof (a real word?) of that. THank you!!!!

What an emotional experience! I visit Sunnybank at least twice a year, and it's lovely to see how little it has changed. And to see some of the collies and Bert himself in action - thrilling! Anyone out there who can read lips and might be able to tell us what he's saying in the closeup?
How absolutely wonderful. I am a former collie breeder and owner and began collecting APT books at age 7. I now own all but one. I never dreamed I would see a video of him. Thank you so much. This is as good as it gets. Kay McIntyre
Thank you for this video. I have all of his books. I love my collies. I grew p with them and when I got my far. I looked all over for my two wonderful collies. Monte and Montessa.
My father told me from time to time through my youth of the Terhune Collie books. Some years back I found a perfect, first edition printing of "Wolf" at a used book store whose owner was a radio ad client. It was as great as dad always said. While we've had "Collies" only as German Shepherd mixes -- I cannot read Terhune's desired vision of his own "homegoing" without choking back tears. I expect to hear my own dogs whining excitedly and scratching on that great door from the inside as I near it
What a truly wonderful gift this is! I've just sent this movie clip link the the Chairwoman of the Terhune Sunnybank Memorial Foundation. I have been a longtime lover of collies and more recently an owner of a rescue collie. I hope that you will plan to come to the annual Sunnybank Gathering...if so, hope to meet you there!
Couldn't believe my eyes! As a child growing up in Pompton Lakes, NJ, I was enamored of collies, all of APT's books, still have them all, including many that weren't published in the popular G&D series. I had the good fortune to enjoy tea on the veranda and then dinner with Mrs Terhune in 1959 or 60 when I was 14 but never met Mr Terhune as he died just before I was born. So after all these years, at last there is a glimpse of the Master himself with the swirling mass of collies. Thanks a lot
Thanks so much for posting this! I grew up near Sunnybank, and APT's books have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. It means so much to me to see this footage. Dogs are: Sigurdson, (white blaze), Explorer, Wolf, Gyp the Doberman, Bobby, Grey Dawn and Tippy the gray Persian cat. Thanks to Kristina Marshall for writing about this in Collie Expressions!
A wonderful and rare piece of archival film footage. Thanks for posting that clip. Collies are a beautiful breed of dog. I've never owned one but have always admired them.
That was absolutely beautiful! I've had my first collie (a rough tri) for 14 months now, and she is the most wonderful, loving dog. I am now a die-hard collie fan. Thank you for sharing this!
I never ever DREAMEd i woud actually get to SEE a home movie of Bert adn Anice and the Sunnybank Collies.. I am so very grateful for this chance..thankyou who ever posted this..from the bottom of my heart.
thanks so very very much for posting this wonderful collage of footage and having put such thoughtful music with it - absolutely beautiful! Thank you again so very much!
Thank you so much for sharing this with us. I hope to go to Sunny Bank this year. I will be right by it. I can hardly believe that I found this. I love his books! THANKYOU AGAIN!!!!
What a gem of a video !!! I grew up on AP's books, read everyone I could get my hands on. I live in northern NJ and visit Sunnybank often during the warmer months (just to walk around and inhale the wonder of the place). I never thought I would see Terhune on film, though. Does anyone have a recording of his voice? He was the master of dog stories indeed !! Thanks so much for sharing this video.
Thank you so much for sharing and this is very special since I visited Sunny Bank for the first time this year. It is heart warming to reconize the landscape and see Lad when he was living.
"I wonder if it is heretical to believe that when at last my tired feet shall tread the Other Shore, a madly welcoming swirl of exultant collies—the splendid Sunnybank dogs that have been my chums here—will bound forward, circling and barking around me, to lead me Home!"
Albert Payson Terhune This film reminds me of this quote of his...
I wish I could remember - I copied it years ago without recording the source- gggrrrr. But I love it. I know it used to be posted on a tribute web site at one point.
It continues, "... Heretical or otherwise, I want to believe it. And if I fail to find them there, I shall know I have taken the Wrong Turning and have reached as goal other than hoped for. " (Buff: A Collie, 1921)
THanks so very much for the entirety of that quote! I have been madly looking for that everywhere for the last couple of years because I remember it so well, though I have not read Buff since I was very little and do not have the book to look it up in, but have pretty much scoured every other Terhune source at my disposal. Thanks a million and happy tails!
How beautiful!! To see Terhune and his collies is great. We've had collies for years and seeing my favorite author and his collies is a thrill. Thank you so much for sharing!
Thanks so much. This is magical. I grew up with collies and Terhune's books. Such happy dogs, just as I pictured them. I wish we knew what he was saying in the video.
I first read `Lad, a dog` when I was about 10 years old, about 50 years ago. I love collies and own 2 at the moment. There is a really good web site for him and Sunnybank with lots of excerpts from his books. The video is just so...... I wish I could have been there.
Absolutely fantastic. Seeing the dogs from the stories of my childhood was just surreal. We have a collie named none other than...Lad! I so loved those books and so did my oldest daughter. What lovely dogs collies are.
The sheer joy on his face, of the dogs.....it's everything I ever imagined Sunnybank would be. Even the swirl of collies at the end, just as he wrote about them. I survived childhood by dreaming of running away there, even though I knew The Place of the books was long gone....and here it is, proof that a dream was once a reality. Where was it found? And can someone post the other video 7collies referenced? Thank you, thank you for this.
I find myself watching this over and over again - thanks so much for sharing - while terribly bittersweet to see all my friends from childhood, it is also some how comforting.
Aries Collie Kennels Thanks for the memories. We went to Sunnybank to a gathering , I videoed the entire property. The Place seemed almost magical. What a great clip, thanks
From my frnd Linda R- Identified Sigurdson & Explorer & maybe that is Gray Dawn just after scene of the wiggling Tippy. Looking at Terhune website trying to identify some of the dogs I was surprised to see that Sigurdson & Explorer were only 9 & 8 respectively when they died & others died around 11. Lad was by far the longest-lived at 16. I'm guessing this must have been made in the late 1920s. If the dog that looks like a merle is Gray Dawn he died in 1929/ Explorer in 1930/Sigurdson in 1931.
Wonderful find! Discovered this over the holidays/just couldn't wait to send message to all of my Collie friends. Also sent to the Collie Club of America archivist & librairian/Colliesonline. I hope that you can share a copy with our CCA archivist/librarian. I noticed that since I first saw it your viewings were around 335/in just several days has swelled to over 1250! Thanks for sharing this! Collies are a wonderful breed--so beautiful/faithful/so intelligent they seem human at times.
Evening, The film clip of the Terhune's is wonderful. Would you be willing to share with the Collie Club of America. We sent a link to our film librarian that was thrill with the clip. Hope to hear from you soon.
Those faces warm my heart beyond anything that the Christmas season can provide. My collies are gone, but seeing this, I am already searching for new puppy. Thank you for the beautiful reminder.
I have seen one only one other film of Terhune, with Robert Friend. Here we are with Sigurd and so many of the collies, and Anice, and even Tippy the cat. It's like a time machine, seeing the Place and people and dogs of our dreams
Bittersweet. This was like seeing a favorite uncle again, one I only knew through his writings. Years after those childhood days of escaping to Sunnybank through books, I visited Sunnybank as an adult. Sitting by Lad's grave, if you close your eyes and listen, beyond the wind making it's way through the treetops, you could almost hear the chorus of joyously barking collies. And at times, the fire blue lake, still is fire blue. Sunnybank, to this day, is magical. Thank you for this video.
Omigosh! WHERE did you GET this??? What a Treasure to share!!! Thank you so much for posting. I have BEEN to the Magical Sunnybank (itsa park, now), and my Collies acted like they had Been there before.....It truly IS an incredible Place on this planet. ToniBailey
OMG, I shed a few tears on this one. I have had 3 rescued collies. One is an angel now. There is no breed like them. I, too, have read the books. After reading the first few pages of "Lad" I wasn't sure I could finish. (beatings) Thrilled that Terhune learned from his mistakes. Going to Sunny Bank is on my "bucket list". What an honor to the magnificient breed. Thank you for sharing!!
Thank you! What a treat. I also grew up and collected his books. Visited Sunnybank in the '84. What an absolute treasure, yes, there are more than 10 of us out here that loved his stories!
"Lad, a Dog" fueled my childhood desire to have a collie. I have two now and they are the most wonderful dogs of course. I recently reread all of APTs books with great nostalgia and pleasure. Thanks for this wonderful video!
Oh my! Words can't describe the flood of emotions that came to me watching this video. What a find! I keep watching it over and over! You will be amazed at how many people will enjoy this and how fast it will spread!
I subscribe to the Terhune Memorial Foundation (Sunnybank) Newsletter. I am wondering if the foundation is aware of this video footage? If not they would truly be interested. I shared it with one of the key members on email to ask her. This is amazing footage.
I've been looking all over for these newsreels, where ever did you find it? I posted it on the Facebook Albert Payson Terhune fan club site, I am so grateful to you!!! More than 10 are going to appreciate this, I assure you. The music you added is wonderful too. Do you know where there may be more newsreels?
awesome video -- thank you! i have had collies for 40 years -- there just is no finer breed :) i shared this with all my friends and its making the rounds on facebook so you should be getting tons of hits!
Thanks so much for posting. We have had two dogs named after Terhune's books, Lad and Treve. You can''t find a finer dog than a collie for affection and looks.
This is a great find on Youtube! I've always wanted to see/know more about APT and this video memory is fantastic. Have owned two Shelties and see the herding breed spirit and love. Again, thank you!!!
I love this! I am a huge Terhune fan! I have all his books and was born and raised right near Pompton Lakes, NJ where Sunnybank was located. Thanks for posting this.
Thank you to all who found and love this post. I wasn't sure I would get any interest. I added the sound There was no sound on the 8MM copy. My first Collie was an east coast dog (Tartanside). I did some transfer of collie related video (from the east coast) to VHS and that is where this came from.
the animal described in the Standard and are of high enough quality to prevail in either country, providing of course the judge wasn't prejudiced against one type or the other. Terhune's champions reflect an aesthetic middle ground between the two and, to my mind, the best of both worlds, being neither long nosed nor fox-faced. Go to the Terhune website and study the headshots of Sigurd and Thane in particular. THAT is what a "clean, well-balanced wedge" looks like in my opinion.
This is my very first time seeing Terhune and his dogs on film: The footage of (I think) Ch. Sunnybank Explorer (the big sable with the prominent white blaze) should serve as a reminder to today's breeders of what a well-balanced collie headpiece ought to look like! Too many American dogs have "tubular" faces and piggy little eyes and their UK counterparts have begun to resemble some kind of Chow/spitz mixture. Explorer's head is the "clean, well-blunted wedge" described by the Standard.
I'm going to assume that my previous comment about American breeders substituting an oversimplified "cone-shaped" head for the correct wedge got posted. Either way, the point I was trying to make was that over the years this lazy misinterpretation of the standard resulted in many, many, MANY extremely homely American collies with a "Ch." in front of their names. Terhune infuriated many collie fanciers by suggesting that they were "breeding the brains out through the nose."
and by suggesting fanciers had introduced Borzoi blood to achieve a flashier headpiece. Terhune's detractors claimed the Sunnybank dogs were poor show specimens until Champions Sigurd, Sigurdson, Explorer and most spectacularly Ch.Sunnybank Thane, shut them up.
The most influential American sire of all time, Ch. Tartanside the Gladiator is a descendant Ch. Sunnybank Thane. If Terhune were around today, I think Tartanside would be one of the few kennels he'd approve of. Buddie's dogs retain
the classic look of collies at the zenith of their Golden Age (1920-1940).As for individual collies of the last 25 years that Terhune would have liked, I have no doubt that Ch. Amberlyn's Bright Tribute would be his favorite, being exactly the kind of bison-coated and big-boned mahogany sable as his fictional embodiment of collie perfection , Ch. Lochinvar Bobby. He'd also like Southland's Bowen Island, Gentry's Braveheart and Tartanside Allegiance. .
darkness is Miranda Blake and her Corydon Kennels, the only modern English collie breeder worthy of the heritage bequeathed by such early greats as Laund, Southport, Sterling and Ladypark. Her Ch. Phrosty's Phreelancer exemplifies the ideal English collie as well as Gladiator did the ideal American collie.
The English vision of the "clean, well-blunted wedge" is somewhat foxy and triangular rather than purely cylindrical. Both Gladiator and Phrosty represent reasonable versions of
what the breed standard is talking about, but glorious as these two are, I prefer Terhune's champions Thane and Sigurd (see the Terhune site for head studies of both dogs) to either Gladiator OR Phrosty, blasphemous as that might be. Long live the Master!
really wonderful video....our dogs are so important in our lives and to have them recorded on video is a gift of technology...what is the music? I like it and it goes well with the pictures.

The sheer joy on his face, of the dogs.....it's everything I ever imagined Sunnybank would be. Even the swirl of collies at the end, just as he wrote about them. And can someone post the other video 7collies referenced? Thank you, thank you for this.

Thank you for this video.

the animal described in the Standard and are of high enough quality to prevail in either country, providing of course the judge wasn't prejudiced against one type or the other. Terhune's champions reflect an aesthetic middle ground between the two and, to my mind, the best of both worlds, being neither long nosed nor fox-faced. Go to the Terhune website and study the headshots of Sigurd and Thane in particular. THAT is what a "clean, well-balanced wedge" looks like in my opinion.
suckfest666 2 years ago
This is my very first time seeing Terhune and his dogs on film: The footage of (I think) Ch. Sunnybank Explorer (the big sable with the prominent white blaze) should serve as a reminder to today's breeders of what a well-balanced collie headpiece ought to look like! Too many American dogs have "tubular" faces and piggy little eyes and their UK counterparts have begun to resemble some kind of Chow/spitz mixture. Explorer's head is the "clean, well-blunted wedge" described by the Standard.
suckfest666 2 years ago
I'm going to assume that my previous comment about American breeders substituting an oversimplified "cone-shaped" head for the correct wedge got posted. Either way, the point I was trying to make was that over the years this lazy misinterpretation of the standard resulted in many, many, MANY extremely homely American collies with a "Ch." in front of their names. Terhune infuriated many collie fanciers by suggesting that they were "breeding the brains out through the nose."
suckfest666 2 years ago
and by suggesting fanciers had introduced Borzoi blood to achieve a flashier headpiece.

He'd also like Southland's Bowen Island, Gentry's Braveheart and Tartanside Allegiance. .
In England, the one light in the

darkness is Miranda Blake and her Corydon Kennels, the only modern English collie breeder worthy of the heritage bequeathed by such early greats as Laund, Southport, Sterling and Ladypark. Her Ch. Phrosty's Phreelancer exemplifies the ideal English collie as well as Gladiator did the ideal American collie.
The English vision of the "clean, well-blunted wedge" is somewhat foxy and triangular rather than purely cylindrical. Both Gladiator and Phrosty represent reasonable versions of
suckfest666 2 years ago
what the breed standard is talking about, but glorious as these two are, I prefer Terhune's champions Thane and Sigurd (see the Terhune site for head studies of both dogs) to either Gladiator OR Phrosty, blasphemous as that might be. Long live the Master!
