It always seemed odd to me that Charlie Sheen played a "nice" jock in this movie, who was sympathetic to and supportive of Lucas.  On the surface, it seemed like his character would be one of the bullies.

If psychologist Lawrence Kohlberg was watching this film, he would say Cappie's morals are at "stage 2-preconventional" because his choices are based on reciprocity and not so much on the Golden Rule. When Cappie was sick with hepatitis, every day for two months, Lucas would bring him his books and homework. After he got better, he corresponded the generosity by acting as Luca's bodyguard, constantly defending him from jocks/bullies, and taking a fairly strong liking at him.

(cont'd) Lucas eventually comes to terms with this, basing it on Darwin's Survival of the Fittest Theory. Cappie is not the type of male who picks on Lucas and becomes disgusted when Maggie shows any interest, friendly or romantic, towards that guy. In fact, it is the opposite. He and Maggie are both really good friends with Lucas. They don't deny their attraction, but they also don't rub it in his sad face.

I can't help but think that the three principal characters, Lucas, Cappie, and Maggie, remind me respectively of Quasimodo, Phoebus, and Esmeralda from Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Lucas who is fully formed, unlike Quasimodo, cannot compete physically with Cappie's brawniness and classic good looks. The beautiful Maggie, whom Lucas is attracted to, sees him only as a great friend, which leaves him slightly devastated. However, the one she sees as boyfriend material is Cappie.

It's funny how the two guys that like Maggie , Lucas and Cappie, are either too young or too old to be in high school and at the same time with her. Granted, Lucas "accelerated" towards high school by skipping a few grades and Cappie seeming too old to be in high school is part of the Hollywood trend of adults playing teens. If Cappie was a senior, I'd find his age easier to believe because my age for graduating in high school is close to his; he's 20 to 21 and I would be 19.
