  • Eccezionali. Null'altro da aggiungere! Tiro pazzesco, sublime, tanto elementare quanto raffinato e compesso, drumming ragionato ma elastico, tessuto armonico perfetto, Clavinet perfettamente calzante, voce fantastica. Grandi, niente da dire.

  • Awesome! and played at the CORRECT tempo!

  • Was REALLY psyched to see them do this last year. Hey drummers: this groove is transcribed in a recent issue of Modern Drummer if you're interested.

  • Never admitted to but....The old rumour was Squib Cakes were 747 Rorrer Qualudes

  • Dude, lets get it right...Rorer 714's!!

  • Just phenomenal musicianship.

  • only 7727 views? ? :S

    this is amazing.

  • AMAZING! way better than the "in the slot" recording. God bless Rocco thats still alive & kicking!

  • I've never heard this live. It's better than the original recording. This proves that TOP is the greatest funk band ever!

  • Just returned from four shows in a row in March and this tune was in for all four. They rarely play this in concerts so it was great to hear it every night as it really brings out the very best in the band.

  • You are very fortunate to get the opportunity to see them. I keep hoping they will tour the southeast someday.

  • They actually been playing it lots in 2009, I've seen them at 4 different shows from March through August, and they've played it at all 4.

  • I forgot how fonky this tune is,never heard full length live version- rocco and bruce conte on my my comedy rap tune "Pootang" on you tube type Steady Fready Pootang, Has bass line similar to JB "I'm Black and Proud" Bruce on video with me and dancing babes-fred Horn

  • David Garibaldi has been back with TOP longer now than the time he was gone. He and Rocco together are incredible. I love this tune.... also like "Page One" from the Oakland Zone cd. Can somebody tell me the time signature on that one?

  • Sounds amazing! Any one know what the sticking is on this? Was just trying to work it out to the original it seems a bit paradiddly?

  • advansed funky studies,rick latham

  • David Garibaldi transcribed the main groove and published it his book "The Funky Beat". Same book includes other TOP groove transcriptions, including Squibb Cakes and Oakland Stroke. I'm proud to say that I've got 'em all nailed - I started going to live TOP shows when is was 14, back in the days of East Bay Grease and Bump City at Berkeley Community Theater and Harmon Gymnasium!! Now, if only I could find a group of playas to jam these tunes out with. What the hell IS a Squib Cake anyhoo?

  • DAMN Rocco and Dave just a VICIOUS groove!!!

  • DAMN that's funky. Uh!

  • WOW! Such a rare song! LOVE IT! From the "In the Slot" Album 1975. Can anybody tell me what time signature this is??

  • It's actually just in 4. The 1 is when the word "serious" begins. David Garibaldi pops the snare there too, followed by the bass drum on the 'e' of 1. One of my all time favorite TOP songs, great to see it live. The only thing I'm not sure about are those horn bends, but everything else about this performance is great! Thanks for posting it.

  • 4/4 man! From end to end. The funk beat is on THE ONE. Page torn right outta James Brown's book! David Garibaldi has written out the main section drum part and published it in his book "The Funky Beat". Yeah, but just 'cause it's written don't mean it can be PLAYED. And what's the point of playing it in a vacuum without Brent, Mimi, Doc and the rest of the fellas out in front of you? Wonder how much it costs to rent 'em for an hour of rehearsals. I will chip in some.

  • @jimbalio i studied with David in 84 and 85 he is a very accomplished player

he was in the army band and you have to be a decent player to make that.

He taught at Dick Grove school of music in LA ( the Valley). He gave out exercises that were written out to be practiced. You can bet your ass he can play all all those patterns he would play them for us.Serious side is one of my favorites. I met a bass player in new Orlns the played just like Rocco with that feel and movement.(Awsom)

  • @maann36 Nice! What a privilege you had there in the 80's. Search youtube for more "On The Serious Side" stuff. There's a very cool one (2:04 long) showing DG and a few friends at a drum clinic - with deconstruction and isolation of the groove.

  • @jimbalio I dont know how old you are back then i met and saw most all the top players from Papa jo Jones max ,vinny,Erskine,Omar, Art Blakey i can go on and on it was a blast. i want to see buddy the day before he died. I met so many player grate and no so grate.Back in the in the 40s&50s they say all the drummers were like a collective they al new and hung out and taught each other licks and techniques but you must realize most played jazz and big band& combos. I can go on and on. It ws fun

  • Just saw them August 15th in San Diego. Still the best live performance in the business after 40 years of touring. Their official 40th anniv. concert is at The Fillmore in San Francisco on 10/18/08.

  • Wut the hayell are the lyrics to the bridge??? "This ain't no laughin' matter / Stop ALL yo piddly patter / 'Cause the idee o' da peanut galleries wull get us within miles of howdy doody"

Um.... WTF??? Did I even come close? What's it all mean MiMi????

  • Mimi's the only person who's going to know. I couldn't decipher this much in the Hubert Tubbs version.

  • where is this from, anyone have this on DVD?

  • NICE! Thanks for posting whatiship73! I can't access your Only So Much Oil video anymore. One of my favorites! Did you delete it?? It says cannot access video???

  • I agree 100 % with mister2drums!!!What a rythmn section !!!...Killer & organ....

  • That's what I'm talking about! Can't get enough of them, especially my Fav. David Garibaldi on drums!

  • Awesome groove. Garibaldi and Rocco are on top!
