Clone right? I believe the factory model had only the low beam lights, they didn't have the lights in the grill. still a great car though looks great, one of my favorite models hard to find 2 doors now to make clones, at least where I'm from.
@MrMetalica11 afte ll these years there is still nothing better than a mean old mopar. great job with the car. i would love to put a supercharged 426 wedge in my altered just to fit thearly sixties time period but for now my 400 dodge will do.
I have got a very good hint for you to keeping the nice old Engine in good shape with todays ultra dry eco fuels: Use 1:100 API TC two stroke oil / fuel mix as regular driving fuel, that keeps the old fuel-system gaskets, rubber parts, alloy parts etc... and cast iron metal surfaces of those vintage engines in excellent shape...and it also lubricates the valves and upper piston regions. Most Porsche vintage owners in Germany do so :) Also keeps carbs + injection and tank clean and rustfree
Contrary to what most people think, there were quite a few purchased, Dodges and Plymouths, for street racing. I had a 63 Sport Fury 426 W 3 Spd stick and ran into lots of others driving them on the street. We currently have the only 426 Max Wedge wagon ahat was produced. It was owned and raced on the street by Ron Mandella in So Cal. and held the A stock NHRA record.
@billnmarilyn you are correct, there were more made than people think.
in 1963 Model year there may have been about 3000 total for both Dodge and Plymouth. I am not sure what the actual production number is, but 3000 is a very large QTY for car like this. It's the race hemi that were low prduction number.
Often an overlooked & forgotten time in the early 60s when you could purchase a barebones base model new with a big block... although more popularly known, the late 60s muscle cars, given their lesser power to weight ratio by comparison, had nothing on these earlier setups.
@LitterboxDiorama unfortuneately they never built alot of these cars and offered them to the public. They were really intended for Super Stock Drag Racing and Chrysler only built enough to make it legal for NHRA.But now days you can build a damn good clone, actually even better than the real thing. This car was a very fun sleeper..Car was in the 11's in the 1/4 mile.
yeah but in 64 they made like 76,000 330's wich is low for the time but hell modern companys dont sell that many in 2 to 3 years its amazing how things have changed! for the worst i may add
LOL at the idiot who said all american V8's are the same. yeah, lets compare a 305 to this factory beast of a mopar. 426 max wedge dude? those things are powerhouses, they were so underrated, they were really around 500hp. for a factory engine? shit i like copo camaros, and a 428 SCJ aint bad either, but this damn beast?? blow the competition out of the water
@marcusedell: Nice! Only thing you need to do now is get rid of the 4.56{unless originality is a major issue}and put in a 3.50 or something, and you've got an instant highway monster. ;-)
@MiracleMileV8 I sold the car last year.theres an update video of this car before i sold it.My big mistake was the 4.56 gears for sure.Sold the car and the guy installed 3.55's in it
@marcusedell: Oh, okay then. ;-)...............I really would've put 3.55s in there as well; with the revs these engines can make, coupled with all the horsepower, these cars can become highway monsters.
@marcusedell a friend of mine had a big block challenger.. he decided to put 4.88 Zoom gears in it.. the package said FOR RACING USE ONLY!! DO NOT USE ON THE STREET.. he was playing around one day racing another guy and the drive shaft came thru the floor board.. lol.
@marcusedell Would it be improper of me to ask approx. how much the 63 went for in the private sale?
My other question, did you ever time that thing in the quarter...just in street trim like we're seeing it here?
Lastly, a comment: It must've been one cool mofo that ordered that car back in the "day". I wonder if he's still alive...and wishes he had his old car back?
Thanks for posting. Both cars have made me drool heavily. Joel in Tucson
Nice to see you kept the cross ram induction. Two beautiful cars. Hell 413ci with stock 410 hp. You turned it into a 426 must be way more than 425 hp.
There are way too many variables to answer that question.I will say in 1964 when the new 426 Hemi came out, they had a few issues and lot of racers were sticking with the Max Wedge even into the 1965 season.
426 Wedge witha typewriter - Nice - old school Mopar at it's finest! Do I hear mechanical lifters in there at teh beginning of the clip when looking in the engine bay? Sweet ride!
Do you have a Big Block Mopar? Its really about sound as much as performance.I've been using the 2 chamber Flowmasters for a while and I like them alot. This car has 3" exhaust, so its sounds real good.
listen I have a 1963 dodge polara with a 472 hemi in it now your telling me I dont have it go see the clip on you tube put in 1963 dodge polara hemi and watch one run down the road
I'm not telling you that? What? Yes you have a stroker 472 Hemi that someone or yourself installed.I know that..I am simply saying the factory didnt release the 426 HEMI's until mid 1964.Thus a Hemi wouldnt have been installed in those cars in 1963 a 426 Max Wedge would.
1965 would be the first full year with the New 426 HEMI A-990 it became the Mopars Super Stock Drag Racing and NASCAR Engine.Banned by NASCAR PEtty Drag Raced for 6 months before returning back to NASCAR.
1965 was a great year for Drag Racing,The Altered Wheelbase cars in A/FX quickly turned into "Funny Cars" The new Hemi was being injected blown on Nitro and running harder and faster than Mopar was really ready for.
1962 The Max Wedge Program Began with the 413,1963 NHRA allowed up to 427 CID in Super Stock Drag Racing and the .060 over 413 was now a 426.Mid 63 the Factory Lightweight Aluminum front end cars debuted, more compression, larger cam and carbs.1964 would be the last year for the Max Wedge 426 with the introduction of the all new 426 HEMI.
marcusedell is right pwizard665, the 426 didn't debut until '64.I think he's just trying to point out the engine in your '63 is not the factory original. It may be a "HEMI", but it isn't the original motor-sorry!
Well they didn't use Hemi's until 64 in Super Stock Mopars.I actually prefer the Wedge engine over the over priced Hemi.Wedges run just as fast and hard.
i'm in love with your car dude, i have had a 64 wedge was originally a 318, but me and my dad tweeked it a bit ,and put wedge in it...i love the red black combo, with push button tourqeflight...awsome ride! thanks for vid!
Nice Car to have!!! The Plymouths actually had a shorter wheelbase in 63 than these Dodges, made the Plymouth a little more desireable for Drag Racing Duties.
@marcusedell Now THAT...I did not know....about the Plymouths having a shorter wheelbase than the Dodges in '63. Geez......how did that happen when they were drawing them up back at the factory. How that fact escaped me kinda boggles my head. Was there much of a weight difference as a result?
I just bought a 1966 Dodge monaco with a 383CI, And I have a 30 gallon custom gas tank installed on it. Any ideas where to get parts for it other than ebay? They dont have that many. Dart, Coronet,Monaco, and Polara are interchangable. I have all the trim and the body only has 2 3 inch dents in it and are barely visable. New paint, white with red interior. White seats. One minor rock mark in the windshield thats been filled to prevent cracking. only 29,000 miles.
