Well, I practiced this 2 days, and I found that harmonics sound different on different guitars..for example when I play on my Ibanez grx70dx I its really hard to make cleat harmonic..you have to pick just above pick ups, and your technique must be perfect..but when I tried same at LP in the music store it sounded awesome ...so don't be frustrated if you just can't do it :D
And different guitars have different sweet spots, also depends on your pickups cuz the sweet spot changes, like when you go from single bridge pickup, to paired, or single neck pickup
By far the best video in YouTube for pinch harmonics, but there is a lot he didn't explain, he showed you get different sounds by where you pick with the technique but didn't say it
@Erikih in all strings, its hard to get in the 6th string (the top one) the other are easies but you need to practice now im trying to get the sound in the 6th string :)
Here's something to keep in mind. I've always referred to the pinch harmonics or squealies as "getting skin." Keep that phrase in mind because when you find the right spots over the pickup section of your guitar, all you will need to do it pick the note and get just a bit of skin. Soon you'll be making it scream. Each guitar is different too. If you have 2 or more guitars, you'll need to experiment with each of them to find the proper spots over the pickup sections to get harmonics.
@MrRoger1969 Aint that the truth. I got a new guitar just recently, and its been challenging to get the pinch harmonics to sound the way I want to on it.
@MrRoger1969 YEah that happens to me. Sometimes I need to find the right place in the string to do the pinch harmonics, and a good place I found in my Gibson was just infront of the neck pickups. I tried in other parts, and it sounds, but there would be the best place for me to do them in that guitar. In my fender, I try and its really hard cuz of the quality of the guitar, its not strato nor telecaster. Pinch harmonics are a bit harde to get in bad guitars...
@ferchobilbao97 Luckily my Gibson SG is bursting with harmonics. I get squeals/pinch harmonics in as many as 3 areas over different parts of the pickups. The natural harmonics over the neck are effortless. I got a good deal on because of a scratches on the back & some small blemishes. I put some $5 Ernie Ball's on it & set the intonation, etc, now I play it as much as my Gibson Les Paul that I have more than twice the money in. The LP Rocks a bit better though. It has a hot 498T in the bridge.
I've played for 32 years & TECHNIQUE & the GUITAR/proper guitar setup have 100% to do with it. Once a person has the TECHNIQUE down, you can hear the harmonics clearly on an unplugged guitar. Pickups, amps etc just enhances the sounds. Also, if you're playing on junk or a poorly setup guitar, you can be Eddie Van Halen & still not be able to get harmonics. Sorry, but cheap guitars won't cut it, & blowing your cash on new pickups, amps, more expensive strings won't teach technique - trust me.
@MrRoger1969 What's the proper guitar setup if i want lets say Delay chourus tuner and a wahwah, Ive got the technique down pretty good, and can hear it with my guitar unplugged, Hope you reply and sorry if i made any spelling mistakes or anything like that, English isn't my first language.
@Eriklju Are you talking amp setup? To get a good pinch harmonic is technique is first and you've said you've got that. The next thing is the the output of your pickups, preferably high output, and then your amp. I play on a Marshall tube amp and a smaller Fender tube amp with good quality distortion and crunch. I'm not certain that combing delay, wah and chorus is gonna do anything spectacular for your harmonics, in fact, those 3 effects together can sound like hell if you're not careful.
@MrRoger1969 definitively man, you are 100% correct, I experienced it myself, I had a shit electric guitar, < 120$ and couldn't get out the clean harmonics especially on the Heavy E string and believe me I had the TECHNIQUE, but after i bought a good calibrated guitar with EMG pickups 60/81...dammmm i do better harmonics then Zakk Wylde (joke). So don't be disappointed if you don't get the harmonics like in this video,
PS: Heavy Gauge strings(0.52) help you with your harmonics on the E string
@k5lta Yeah you kind find a lot of good guitars for $400.00 I have an authentic made in the USA Gibson SG that's a worn brown color which I bought for $500.00 brand new. It had a few blemishes on it and with a $100 off coupon at Guitar Center I ended up with a guitar that would have been $800.00 with tax. I also have a MIM Strat that I rebuilt and I only have $300.00 in it. As long as the $400.00 isn't going into special edition paint jobs, etc. Just go for overall quality.
@JoesTelevision The best thing to do is to find someone you trust who can make sure it's set up properly, and someone who can play it and see if it is capable of getting good pinch harmonics. I haven't played any BC Rich guitars except for some older ones from back in the 80's.
@3mr3can You don't want to rest your right hand thumb on the string. You just want to lightly graze it and lift off. If you rest it there, you will just mute the note. You just want to graze it with the thumb and lift off. A tip on learning pinch harmonics - try em first by playing a powerchord (say 5th fret E string and 7th fret A string), and then holding the position and trying to do a pinch harmonic on the E note (7th fret A string). That way you also simultaneously mute the E string).
thank you so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so MUCH MUCH!!!!
i can do it with 50% chance of sucsess, but then i use my finger, and not my thumb :P did it by accident one time, and have tried to get it right for some weeks now. but i guess that once you learn it, it becomes so effin easy, you just wonder: Why was this hard before !?
@daltonreyes9087 At the moment youre putting humbuckers in it, its a superstrat and thus a metal guitar. Many metal guitarists play with stratocaster-shaped guitars.
i used to be so fuckin pissed when my friend could do this ani couldnt! i would try an try an try watch countless instructional videos an shit an did it like once barely! an then i was just like fuck it an quit tryin an stop playin giddy for like a two weeks an then when i pickedit up an started playin i busted it out an now i can do em anywhere an its old news to me lol lifes a bitch its all in ur head!
i do something like that with my left hand though instead of using my thumb i barely touch the note and it will squel it sounds kind of the same is that another way to do it?
I have spent so much goddamn time trying to do this technique. Still can't do it. I've tried tighter tunings (Open F to be exact), checking my left hand technique and right hand technique, changing amp settings, trying different guitars, doing exactly what this guy says and still can NOT FUCKING DO ITT!!! Dx
@bozzioisgod44 what kind of pickups are in your guitar? The higher the output of the pickup, the more pronounced the pinch harmonics are. Something active like EMG's or Duncan Blackouts are so high output that you can PINCH HARMONIC ON ACCIDENT. For Passive pickups I'd recommend something like a Seymour Duncan Invader.
It's basically impossible to teach these these things. You get the general idea from these videos and the rest is up to you. You have to develop a relationship with your instrument. You can't expect to be awesome overnight. Or even in a year's time. It takes time and bonding.
But one thing I had a hard time with is that None of these videos say that there are certain areas that pick up the harmonics. try "pinching" it above the edge of the neck pickup nearest the bridge to start.
Couldn't be any more clear. It's easy to show, hard to actually do it. Takes time and practice to get it to sound right. Critiques, go practice! Maybe then come back when you get it and thank the man for his free lesson :P
Um I'm a ok player I won't lie like you fagets but on cleen and only on the high e and b string I can get the hampnics just like you hurd on this vid but I do agree on the a e g you fuked can't but I'm able
he doesn't suck at teaching! This is just very hard to explain... The first time I read it in my book and I didn't know, how to do it, I was like WTF? The explanation for this sounds always silly... trying out is the only thing to get this done ;)
this guy doesn't suck at teaching. the problem is, pinch harmonics are really hard to teach (and learn) via video. i just got the hang of them like an hour ago, only because this guy at the music store taught me how to do them in person, and trust me, if you can get someone to teach you in real life they're a lot easier to learn
You suck as a music instructor and personally i think your right down fake in everyway for using a pedal for your pitch harmonics. Use clean and standurd setting then show me where that stupid as shit skin move comes into play faggot.
@blingvato dude you're a dumbarse. you can't HEAR them in clean, and he's not using a pedal. try holding your hand (and the pick) perpendicular to the strings, and then just mess around with the position of your hand (nearer to or further from) the bridge in high gain and you get the sound. for that "wah-ish sound just bend the string up a semitone.
@steeloscarman Because the guy is shit like you are full of shit. AND don't tell me to fuck off until you are old enough to back it up or I'll come over to your house and shove your guitar up your ass and use you as a Popsicle.
.
This guy couldn't even play the penis.
.
No wonder you are shit too coz you use shitters like this as role models.
if you go into Drop C it makes pinches A LOT easier and then you really can do them at every fret. if its in standard i can only get good harmonics at the inlays. I like how this guy slides and his left hand around and a bit to get different pitches i didnt know you could do that lol, it makes sense though. Hes says variations of the note and he slides his left hand up and down the strings.
You stink. You can't play that end riff steadily and without muting it. You also shouldn't be teaching[.] (That's how it should be for him. But, moving on.) "heavy metal" guitar if you're using A STINKING FENDER! Who in metal uses a FENDER? No one I've seen! You should be using an Ibanez or PRS or even a Gibson! Anything BUT a Fender!
@apples878 im having the same problem u r but i noticed that if u look at the way he strumms normally and when he does the pinch harmonics ull see thaat when he strums the pick is a lot more vertical rather than horizontal
@myersvids Yes, this is so true. My amp burst into flames and the speaker shot out at great speed and hit my leg. I now cannot play guitar anymore because I have no leg because of over-harmonising.
Not anymore, I have a flying V and everyone knows how sharp they are, so i dropped it and it fell and cut off my arm :(. Now i play with my foot and one arm :'(

he doesn't suck at teaching! This is just very hard to explain... The first time I read it in my book and I didn't know, how to do it, I was like WTF? The explanation for this sounds always silly... trying out is the only thing to get this done ;)
simulator94 1 year ago
you cant play pinch harmonics on clean retard
SoundofMadness15 1 year ago
this guy doesn't suck at teaching. the problem is, pinch harmonics are really hard to teach (and learn) via video. i just got the hang of them like an hour ago, only because this guy at the music store taught me how to do them in person, and trust me, if you can get someone to teach you in real life they're a lot easier to learn
skatingequalsPoWeR 1 year ago
You suck as a music instructor and personally i think your right down fake in everyway for using a pedal for your pitch harmonics. Use clean and standurd setting then show me where that stupid as shit skin move comes into play faggot.
blingvato 1 year ago
@blingvato u can do that with a pedal...show me...now....plz...
wearblackclothes 1 year ago
@blingvato dude you're a dumbarse. you can't HEAR them in clean, and he's not using a pedal. try holding your hand (and the pick) perpendicular to the strings, and then just mess around with the position of your hand (nearer to or further from) the bridge in high gain and you get the sound. for that "wah-ish sound just bend the string up a semitone.
skatingequalsPoWeR 1 year ago
I don't choke up on the pick as much as you why the fuck don't you quit being a fucking show off and teach!
killer118008 1 year ago
maybe he should learn to do good pinch harmonics before making a video with "expert" village
damowade 1 year ago
I would like to make it clear that a pinch harmonic is not just a metal technique, fail!

if you go into Drop C it makes pinches A LOT easier and then you really can do them at every fret. if its in standard i can only get good harmonics at the inlays. I like how this guy slides and his left hand around and a bit to get different pitches i didnt know you could do that lol, it makes sense though. Hes says variations of the note and he slides his left hand up and down the strings.
WoodenBoxEngineer 1 year ago
Anything BUT a Fender!

naw it wont burn your amp it will just reduce the quality of your speakers
thatcoolG 2 years ago
Yeah, unless your a fag who DOESN'T use celestion.
CriticsConfession 2 years ago
@myersvids Yes, this is so true. My amp burst into flames and the speaker shot out at great speed and hit my leg. I now cannot play guitar anymore because I have no leg because of over-harmonising.
True story.

lol, awsome, ya when I did these my amp speakers went through my ceiling lol jk
