Chomsky clearly knows nothing about porn and comes across here even more silly and specious as usual. I guess we shouldn't begrudge him in his quest to be wrong about everything.
btw There are loads of wealthy well-off independent females (like the powerful affluent dominatrix) who *choose* do do porn! They most certainly aren't 'poverty stricken'!! They're simply highly sexual exhibitionists who enjoy entertaining others with their sexuality. Why not? Just like a singer who enjoys entertaining people with her voice; or a soccer player who enjoys entertaining ppl with their kicks. All these nosy old grey men should just butt out of the lives of women.
Love the way he only talks about *women* that do porn. Not a word about men! What's that all about???? So men can enjoy it and get paid for it but women are subjugated into it. What a load of crap. Both sexes enjoy having sex and getting paid for it!
But porn glorifies rape, abuse, and mysogynism- destructive unconsensual acts. While a woman might agree to be a porn star, it is an act of desperation. They come from such poverty that porn is a tempting way for them to survive. With no other viable jobs open, they risk their lives to sell their bodies as merchandise. Many are substance abuse victims and have mental illnesses as well as suffer from std's and health issues. Society shapes their "consent" eliminating it and pushing them to it.
@treehuggerdude4 I agree with you 100% being a a man i am probably sadly in the minority but I find porno disgusting and a woman with self respect and class and self worth will always be more attractive than those who derive their self worth from showing their bodies and being of loose morals ,Anyway just wanted to let you know that I thought your comment hit the nail right on the head,Please ladies respect yourselves because that is the sexist thing of all,
CHOMSKY IS CONTROLLED. NO DOUBT IN MY MIND. Read the published email correspondence between him and Kevin Barrett regarding arrangements to appear on his radio program. Its a long read but worth it. Chomsky's evasiveness and willful ignorance is overwhelming.
the moment I heard Chomsky was jewish and saw the red star on his book I knew he was a joke, Im just upset him and fucking fucking Kissinger survived the nazi's if anyone needs to be emigrated it's these two clowns
I generally agree with chomsky on the whole, but I disagree strongly with his views on porn. It seems to me like he is missing the point here. To say that porn is degrading to women is to say that sex is degrading to women. Sex is not inherently abusive to women.
And do not say that I say this because I love porn too much to damn it. I have stopped lookiing at porn for months, but not for ethics. I find that it dulls real life sex.
I have to say, I lost a lot of respect for Noam after seeing this. There are some abuses in the porn industry, but overall pornography is not analogous to child abuse or sweatshop labor.
What about male porn stars ? Are they not degraded too ? Just another example of the victimization of women. A man goes into porn - that's a decision that he is responsible for and he can deal with the consequences. A woman goes into porn - she didn't know what she was doing/she was pressured by the patriarchal society - lets save her. It's ironic that the people who supposedly believe that women are equal give so little credit to the decisions that women makes.
Porn has created a whole generation of males who are over stimulated to the point of neuroses. They cannot relate or interact with women any more without their brains telling them "this is a fuck object, I can't relate nor talk to her properly".
Our caveman brains didn't have hundreds of novels partners every week back in paleolithic days. yourbrainonporn com
most of these girls are attention whores and wannabe movie stars. it doesnt make it right to degredate them, but equating them with starving childeren and sweat shop workers is fallacious.
I admire Chomsky, but he's wrong here. Porn gives people, mainly men, a safe and legal sexual outlet that might otherwise require them to become predators. Chomsky is naive to think that if you eliminated porn, you would end the "degradation" of women. Men would simply turn their sexual appetites on real women instead of photographs.
@shizzy35 Some women in pornographic films experience sexual violence and torture - these women are real women. Men masturbate over their abuse... why the hell should these women be used as an outlet for scummy men?! Also, unless men are content to settle for masturbation, instead of sex, what you have said is rubbish and pornography is not a requisite for masturbation. Child pornography also provides a safe outlet for paedophiles, that might otherwise require them to become predators, right?!
@AMeanderingSoul, you sound exactly like the kind of unenlightened boob who would support antiporn laws. First off, 95% of porn does not involve "sexual violence and toture," unless it's completely staged. Secondly, I and most thinking people are 100% against child pornography. Third, most men do not "settle" for masturbation over real sex. They masturbate because they can't get or find real sex, you moron -- mainly because people like you are probably against legal prostitution, too.
@shizzy35 You're the unenlightened moron - your argument fails - you said that pornography may prevent men from becoming sexual predators, I used child pornography as an example that this is not the case. I didn't suggest that you did condone child pornography, did I?!
@AMeanderingSoul, you say "why should women be abused and tortured just because some scummy men want to masturbate." Here's one reason: for the money. It's a multi-billion dollar industry. The vast majority are grown women with their own brains and goals, who don't need people like you telling them what's right or wrong. And I'm betting they would disagree with you that they're being "mutilated" or "tortured." So stop acting hysterical and trying to impose your own set of morals on others.
@shizzy35 I'm not being hysterical or trying to "impose my own set of morals on others' and I'm not telling 'them', "what's right or wrong" - You're deluded. Some women in pornography are paid, some aren't and some are trafficked into pornography. The majority of viewers know nothing about most of the people they masturbate over... they don't know the names of the people or whether they have been coerced or forced into pornography... never mind what their goals are!
@AMeanderingSoul, right, some women aren't paid. Some choose to do it for free because they like the thrill of it. You have no more idea about it than anyone else, so stop acting like you do. My original point, which you don't seem to get, is that humans are sexual creatures. It's bred in. Just look at the sexually explicit cave drawings from prehistoric days. Porn has been around forever. Humans will find sex where they can get it. Porn is an outlet, whether you like it or not. So move on.
@shizzy35 Yeah, women are trafficked into pornography, children are sexually abused - their abuse is then recorded so men can masturbate. You are such a fucking lowlife, if you think people should just forget/ignore what's happening and 'move on'. Yes, people are sexual creatures but people are also capable of thinking, decision making and controlling themselves! Nobody needs to be abused so someone else can masturbate!
@AMeanderingSoul, I'm guessing you have about as much knowledge of the porn industry as Noam Chomsky, who has exactly zero. I'm sure neither you nor he has been within a solar system of anyone connected to the porn industry, yet you still think you're qualified to comment on it. Calling me a "lowlife" tells me all I need to know about what's between your ears. But you know what: my wife thinks I'm ok, and so do my two daughters. Now, go masturbate some of your sexual repression away.
@shizzy35 I didn't call you a lowlife, I said "you are such a fucking lowlife, IF you.." and IF that does apply to you, then you clearly aren't one of the "thinking people" that "are 100% against child pornography". Your original point was that pornography may prevent men from becoming sexual predators (unless you made a point previously that I haven't read), not that humans are sexual creatures... some people can be sexual beings and masturbate, without involving paper and computers!
@AMeanderingSoul, do you know how many people consume pornography? Hundreds and hundreds of millions. You know how many become actual sexual predators? Way less than 1% -- a figure so microscopic it's practically non-existent. Do you know how many people would become actual sexual predators if they didn't have porn and/or masturbation as an outlet? Many many millions more than now. I know this because I'm a writer who has reported on it. You, on the other hand, are just an uninformed gasbag.
@shizzy35 You are the absolute imbecile - Since you've done so much writing about the topic, how and why have you not mentioned trafficking and slavery? Masturbation is a sexual outlet. People are able to masturbate without using pornography. If masturbation is not enough to satisfy the person that masturbates, then your argument is false. The priest were able to masturbate but they chose to violate other people, just like many fathers do. The logic you use also applies to paedophiles.
@AMeanderingSoul, thanks for making my point for me. You don't even know the most basic things about the subject. The Catholic Church teaches that masturbation is "a grave moral disorder" and and "an intrinsically and seriously disordered act." Ergo, priests are not supposed to do it, and if they are caught doing it, they can be expelled from the priesthood. As for "trafficing" and "slavery:" these are so rare in porn they are statistically insignificant. Again, do some research, you idiot.
@shizzy35 No, I've not made any point for you. I know what the Church teaches, but do you really think people will abide by that, if they are prepared to abuse a child?!
@shizzy35 Women are trafficked into prostitution, stripping etc. many prostitutes end up in pornographic films and prostitutes can tell you this themselves. "as for trafficing" and "slavery:" these are so rare in porn they are statistically insignificant" - the majority of children in pornography have been trafficked and enslaved.. so no, trafficking and slavery is not rare in pornography, at all, and those that have been trafficked and enslaved are not "statistically insignificant"!
@shizzy35 You 'write' about this topic... and you resort to sentences like that?! Whatever! What's come across most in your 'discussion', after everything you have said, is how abusive you are.
@AMeanderingSoul, I resort to stuff like that because people like you don't listen to reason, you just want to wag your fucking finger and tell everyone how to run their lives, so why not just take it all the way to the gutter, because that's the only thing that works with you. Not to mention the fact that you just won't shut the fuck up about it and you keep bombarding my e-mail inbox with your stupidass opinions. So just go the fuck away, ok? You have your opinion, I have mine. Now get lost.
@shizzy35 Okay brainiac... if you comment on public websites, don't be so surprised if people respond to what you've written. Your comments go into my in-box... that's how this site works... if you have a problem with that, then leave or don't post comments or don't respond to people that have commented on your posts – if you don't respond, you don't keep the dialogue open... these things are easy to figure out!
@shizzy35 Me.. listen to reason? You respond to a fact that I pointed out about child pornography and trafficking with, “go stick a 12-inch dildo up your ass you cunt” ~ You come across as an ignorant, loathsome human being that is more comfortable with abuse and insults than truth, logic and facts. Nobody needs to take you to the gutter... you're already there! You are the one that doesn't listen... or read very well... since I haven't told anyone what they should or should not do!
@shizzy35 Also, Noam didn't even say anything about eliminating pornography... he said the degradation of women should be eliminated! Noam is right when he discusses choices and he's right about pornography being humiliating and degrading and even pornographers would agree with him, since they use those words (including torture and mutilation), to describe the pornography they produce!
@shizzy35 Paedophiles have always had access to child pornography, have the amount of children that have been abused, decreased, since pornography has become more available? No. In fact some claim that there has been an increase in the amount of child pornography available - proof in itself that pornography consumption doesn't necessarily prevent people from becoming predators. Other people claim that the demand for and the number of children in prostitution, is increasing.
@shizzy35 However, I have called you a moron and I stand by that - you're confusing sexual repression for anger... anger because women and children are being trafficked into the sex 'industry' and abused, for other people's entertainment... and because morons such as yourself, tend to avoid the issue completely when discussing pornography!
@shizzy35 I pointed out that some women are abused, raped, mutilated and tortured in order to produce pornographic films. So even though the viewers are not directly abusing women themselves, other men are abusing, raping, mutilating and torturing real women, so the viewers can masturbate to their own fantasies... I questioned, why should women be abused and tortured because some scummy men want to masturbate and are unable to abuse women themselves - I was not arguing percentages!
Usually agree with Chomsky, but not onthis. Porn is ot about humiliating women but about feeding sexual masturbation fantasies. Poeple choose to go into porn. I don't understand why they do it, but they do.
Husbands and wives would then dominate the adult entertainment industry because that would be "eliminating the degradation of women." It would only force it more underground.
if pornography was fair is would not portray anything more than normal sex between equals people degrade themselves and others for money in the world nothing sexy about it but some weak people get off on human degradation so that explains why porn often portrays unequality or domination etc !
Thing is, it's unclear whether Chomsky has in mind ALL pornography -- that is, he's saying porn is BY DEFINITION degradation of women -- or whether he's referring generally to the kind of stuff that's so normalized by the (especially American) porn industry.
@Rahab111222 That's stupid reasoning. I like porn, but I know objectively that it's not healthy for the mind. It's like someone saying, heroin is bad, then all the heroin addict come and say, yeah right, this guy is full of it.
The heroin analogy also doesn't stand up to scrutiny, because heroine demonstrably shows it has a tangibly harmful effect to one's health because of its addictive and life threatening effects. You said you liked porn, so I don't have to tell you that it's possible to use porn in a recreational manner without becoming a caricature craven porn addict these clowns in your local women-studies class like to espouse.
@Rahab111222 I've never taken any sort of women studies courses. Porn is also addictive, and it is harmful to the psyche because it desensitizes you to the idea of sexuality and sexual images which I would consider unhealthy but that's relative.
Correction, porn just like every other recreational form of pleasure has the POTENTIAL to be addictive.
""it is harmful to the psyche because it desensitizes you to the idea of sexuality""
The 'idea of sexuality'. Is that something you can poke and prod in a lab? Otherwise it just sounds like vague spiritual clap trap. I'm sorry your idea is being battered to a pulp by watching porn, then.
I don't think guys are going to stop getting hard-ons from the sight of a pair of tits and ass anytime soon, especially just by looking at a simulated version of it every once in a while.
@ChronoTriggerMusic That's foolish. You can disagree with someone for MANY reasons. People who don't watch porn can disagree with Chomsky as well. However, for people "who love their porn", as you said, they definitely can listen and analyze people who say otherwise.
i doubt that a man the age of Chomsky is aware of popular porn magazines and he calls it the hustler. Pornography is getting more and more out of control. its pretty much gaurded under the right to free speech which is so laughable that we can tweak contitutional law as a means to get off. obviously the people who spent hour upon hour trying to frame the constitution never ment for it to be a way to get away with everything. there is nothing civil or decent about porn and it ruins lives.
@DrOprahVonPenishat Did Chomsky say it is worse for women, or is he saying porn is just degrading in general no matter who's involved in it, be it a man or a woman.
@JJbubbs23 "Pornography is the humiliation and degradation of WOMEN"
"Just take a look at the pictures.... WOMEN are degraded as vulgar sex objects"
"If they get enjoyment out of the humiliation of WOMEN, that's a problem"
He also directly compares 'female' pornstars to sweat shop workers and, reduces them to the equivalent of a helpless child being molested.... not once does he directly mention men.
@DrOprahVonPenishat Whether it is women or men don't you find pornography degrading? I guess it is all about personal opinion, I think Chomsky's basic point is we should encourage people to not enter pornography. There is a lot more negatives then positives associated with pornography.
@JJbubbs23 I think Chomsky's basic point was to cover his ass, i think this was a rushed and not well thought out response to appease his target audience. I also think saying he'd never heard of Hustler is a blatant lie.
Call me a hater but i'm actually a huge fan of his but, at the same time, i have my own opinions and i don't agree or feel i have to agree with everything he says. He is very very smart but he is not infallible.
@ilshockll He probably doesn't like the idea that women are being paid to have sex on camera. Its really no different than prostitution, other than the fact that its being filmed. Its very consistent, historically, that women resort to prostitution in desperate economies. It would be better that we just help people directly than pay them to degrade their selves and to undermine something as intimate as sex on our behalf.
@JNathanK2011 well many people have different views on sex. i respect a persons view of sex as the ultimate intimacy but that isn't the case for everyone (numerous women included). it is not dissimilar to prostitution. they are very much the same thing, however, i support the legalization of prostitution (under certain circumstances). and to be fair both men and women occupy all economic levels.i kind of see it as, due to growing gender equality, just one more option women have.
@Truthslap: :D yeah, China is ahead of the curve with their totalitarian rule. Chinese people like any people cannot handle freedom and need successful strategies such as family planning, migration control and stopping their citizens from voicing their opinion. I am sure your comment is just a joke, but I have to comment it, as DarkprinX2500 may not understand that...
Sexual fantasies have always existed whether we could film them or not. The only people who should be concerned if a fantasy is ok or not are the people involved. Men's domination of females has also "been around much longer than this liberal sex movement", you will find a lot of oppressive traditions that were not abolished until countries reached a certain amount if maturity and civilization. I wonder what you truly think about other old traditions abolished, such as slavery...
@ DarkprinX2500. Bisarre, deviant... History is full of people full of themselves and ideas of how other people should be. Marriage is great if it works, but today women can leave if they are mistreated rather than stay in a prison with no chance of earning their own income while men were much freer to behave like they wanted.
@ vietorkorean: what is wrong in your scenario is people using a derogatory word such as whore. What do you call a male porn star? Porn is not misogynistic, abuse of porn actresses is. Having a great appetite for sex is not wrong whether you are a man or a woman, calling someone a slut or whore is.
@pwilhelmson their shouldn't be an industry that caters to bizzare deviant sexual fantasies... the only porn allowed should be nude mags. that should be enough for you perverts... you people are undermining the institution of marriage that has been around much longer than this liberal sex movement.. and the mindset behind it.. apparently you don't value the worth of people.. because you have no problem with them exploiting themselves...that's what the porn industry is..
Well this is just one of the all too many cases on our books of Americanism. The only way that we can fight this terrible debilitating social disease, is by informing the general public of its consequences, by showing young people that it's just not worth it. So, so please give generously to this address: The League for fighting the United States of America, 55 Lincoln House, Basil Street, London, SW3.
What about the sexual needs of the lonely, disabled, sociophobic or huggly people that can't get an actual sexual partner? Are they condemned to shabby masturbation, without visual/audio stimulation? Just resorting to their sometimes faint imagination, as faint as their non-existent sex experience? In truth, porn people are angels in disguise to these lonely beings, I think...
@AnaKosta While I agree that those denominations of people should have some outlet, pornography is largely, not entirely, degrading. It's a tough subject.
The only time I've ever disagreed with Noam Chomsky, respectfully though, seems he isn't up to date a bit here and he shouldn't be, his main area is politics and linguists not every day entertainment or society. Personally I and a lot of people believe a society's freedoms should be a measure on whether porn is illegal or not, that to me is true sexual liberation, and many porn actresses enjoy it and choose to do it because its natural sex and they are not bound down by old age rules
his views seem to me to be the most sexist! so theres no way these women could have decided for themselves this is what they wanted to do? men must have coerced or forced them?
what if he spoke to one of the women and find out that this career was completely her choice and she had no problem with doing it, would he still think it was wrong?
well, first of all i admire this man. I must say tho, that i disagree with him on this topic. He is ceirtanlly right about the fact porn can be degradating for wemen..true..but he is not considering that there are wemen -and men- that can really have bizzarre sex taste and that their "perversion" must not be judge under a bad view. Perversion , if it cames naturally and consensually, is an irrational expression of the human being as can be painting or any other form of pleasure
@johnalton22 I think it's a solid analogy. He isn't saying that porn is as bad as sweatshops, what he's arguing is that consent and payment don't make something good. You can find someone (convince someone) to do anything, especially if there's money involved.
@Hirfel I think describing it as a "solid" is going a little too far. It's a fairly reasonable analogy - but it has serious problems. The two premises Chomsky chooses may be somewhat comparable, but they're FAR from equatable. The choice of most sweatshop workers comes down to the sweatshops or facing an almost complete inability to survive. With most porn actors this isn't the case. There are plenty of other jobs they could choose that would provide them a more than adequate living.
see, it's the stance against the porn industry whereby a lot of feminists actually pwn themselves - they undermine a woman's right to choose what she wants to do as a career. That's pretty sexist, don't you think?
Feminists are fat sows who are envious of better looking woman. Is it any wonder that feminists are usually fat bitches with pancake cheeks? And they don't want equality at all. Here are some examples to prove that assertion: mining in dangerous coal mines, chopping down trees, or getting drafted to fight on the front lines of a war. To misandrists of the world, civilization would last without men until the car needed its oil to be changed.
Mankind has created pornography almost since the day man was able to draw things in walls. Fighting against that is 100% pointless, if you give man a new form of communication, he will put porn in it, plain and simple.
There are different types of pornography. He's talking about professional, male-driven pornography; there are other less degrading forms, or voluntary without pay forms, that he either is choosing not to talk about or just doesn't know about. Pornography is an umbrella term that applies to both extremes.
As a man I enjoy watching pornography. I simply cannot resist the visual stimulation and pleasure I receive from watching it. On the other hand, its painfully unrealistic and can distort what is deemed as a "normal" or "healthy" sexuality. Yet, there is no coercion, after all the women do it out of their volition and not exclusively for the money. Do I think there's a better way to serve as an outlet for men's sexual desires? Not at the moment, so pornography would have to do.
Wow, I had no idea Chomsky is against this. Honestly I don't have a problem with porn itself, I just think there are problems within the porn industry and they way in which they cater specifically to men. However, I don't think the answer is as simple as "eliminate the degradation of women", and comparing it to child porn is a bit of a stretch. Honestly, how do you define degradation? Where do you draw the line?? Why is sex seen as this horrible thing, but only with women??
@m3rmaidbones I should rephrase: I don't have a problem with them catering to men. I have a problem with them catering to men 90% of the time, as though women don't have these same desires, and this same drive. The idea that women are, and should remain, pure is a MYTH. This creates a porn industry full of fake blondes, with fake boobs, faking their orgasms. The focus often is on the man's pleasure. You're more likely to see a woman with cum all over her face than have her clit rubbed.
@m3rmaidbones Porn is desensitzation to natural instincts. Your brain is a chemical storehouse for hormones. Repeated exposures to sexual stimulus increases urges making the viewer continually addicted. Porn is as powerful and addictive as a super drug. And like any drug the consumer has to keep taking larger doses in order to stay satisfied since they are becoming dulled after their 1st intense exposure. So as sexuality escalates it turns animalistic and immoral: Rape, Sexual Violence, etc.
@hitartizte It rewrites the programming of your brain's usual functions, distorting your perception of reality making you live in a lizard brain / survival mode. Love in a relationship is not love after porn, partners become from a intimate companion into a flesh fantasy that they can not live up to as the highly idealized dream girls in the world of pornography. Porn degrades sex from a deep close bond into an animal feeding frenzy.
@hitartizte Sex IS a natural instinct, and your brain is not a storehouse for hormones! Unless you're talking about the hypothalamus? But even then it doesn't "store" it. I'm sorry I just don't get it. What hormones are you talking about anyway?
@m3rmaidbones Sex is a union between two people who are married >.< natural instincts such as lust has nothing to do with marriage and union. You can be excited by anything that strikes you as erotic or attractive but that does not mean you are going to go marry it! That is like saying you are going to marry a girl after meeting her for one day. Sex hormones such as testosterone ( i probably butchered the spelling of that), estrogen, blah.
@hitartizte Well, that's your opinion. To me, marriage is just a piece of paper. I don't see anything wrong with casual sex or sex before marriage. If it's between consenting adults, then it's really none of your business.
@m3rmaidbones the institution of marriage is one of the oldest.. even the ancient egyptians believed in it.. but you and your crazy sexual liberal mindset . tells you.. no marriage is just a piece of paper.. congrats you and other people that subscribe to this mindset are the reason that aids spread so rapidly ..
@DarkprinX2500 AHAHA OH MY GOD. AIDS spread because it was highly transmittable, because people didn't know what the fuck was going on, and people weren't using PROTECTION. You have got to be kidding me, you fucking idiot. Some people are monogamous, some people aren't. I personally am, because that's my choice and it's my business. Unlike you, I don't feel the need to stick my nose in other people's business and apparently put down people with a debilitating disease??? Just. wow.
Then why were over 64% of the NEW investors in pornography professional women from 1997-2006? Ex-stars and entrepreneurs who started films or businesses themselves. All female of that percentile. Capitalism isn't gender-specific and it creates disparities regardless. It's a class issue, like everything in reality. Not to mention within the female-owned studios, safety and disease prevention increased by 40% from other "big" studios. The 'financial' side of any business is what fuels oppression.
Porn CAN be degrading (Depends on genre) to individual porn stars, man or woman, but it is not discriminatory toward entire minority groups or either sex.
But so what? They have made the decision to become a porn star for whatever reason, so shut the fuck up and let them get on with it.
Pornography has become just as harmful as meth, cocaine, alcohol and gambling (when taken to extremes) not to the pornographers and some of the actors and actresses but definitely for the ones addicted to it. I would bet that none of you know what it takes to be a porn star (sic). Pornography is not about promoting the beauty of love, women and the intimate relationship that is a result of the union between two people. It is about feeding an aberrant addiction...
I agree to be honest. I used to go on porn sites, mostly for female masturbation videos, but every visitor brings them advertising revenue - adverts that included (what I hoped were simulations of) assault. Since watching this video I haven't been back.
So ur telling me u don't have any problem if ur mother, sister or gf have a career in porn? No problem at all when someone call ur mother or sister a whore because of their profession? If it's just the prospect of them having sex that annoys u, then u don't have to watch it. It's not like porn is air on public TV channels (not talking about those ppv adult channels), u'd actually have to search it up on the internet if u wanna watch.
What they do for a living - as long as it doesn't hurt anybody and is fully consensual - is none of my business.
If people want to call my hypothetical porn-star mum or sis a whore, then let them. Most people get branded as something derogatory these days anyway.
Of course I wouldn't like to think about it -- who would want to think about a parent having sex? However, there's a difference between not liking something and banning it because you don't like it.
@T800System what if it hurts you ...what if it hurts your family .. yes it does in every case
porn industry is no different and just as bad as prostitution..my solution would be to ban all live pornography..and only allow artificial porn like drawings cartoons.. so that way perverts get what they want..and nobody is exploited
@vietorkorean If people like you didn't view porn actors as whores and disgusting humans, which you obviously do, then the career choice would be far more accepted then what it is now and then no one would care if someone they knew worked in porn. Not all porn is degrading, but alot of it is for the obvious reason that some women and men enjoy it. If you don't like it, don't watch it. What you are saying is in a way degrading to the people who get turned on by getting degraded.
With all due respect to Noam Chomsky, the paralel between sweat shops (child in the slums) and the porn industry (actress "degrading" herself) is outrageous.
Ur stupid statement is irrelevant to my question. I don't think sex is wrong, i just think sex on camera for the whole world to see is. Hence my question was for the people who love porn not the people who love sex. I don't know why i even bother explaining to u, ur stupid brain probably won't understand it anyways. Oh well...
@vietorkorean No But that is the reason that people look at porn because it is looking at someone they don't know. The strangers who are doing it and the people who are sponsoring it (by paying to watch it) are all prisoners of their own device.
@vietorkorean Illogical. I wouldn't want to see my mom or sister in porn for the same reasons I wouldn't want to see them naked. I wouldn't want to see my gf in porn for the same reason that I wouldn't want her to be penetrated by other men. Nothing to do with degradation.
That's actually a very good argument. Simple yet clear. So if it got nothing to do with degradation, u wouldn't feel ashamed or anything if people call ur mom a whore cuz she does porn?
I don't care if it's degrading or not. Working at McDonalds is degrading in a lot of peoples minds. That doesn't give me or anyone else the right to ban people from doing it.
@vietorkorean Some people LIKE to fuck on film and have people watch them get fucked. And they are very thankful they can get paid for doing it. It's nothing like a sweat shop, you don't have orgasms at a nike factory.
I'm surprised how angry people are about what noam said. I don't think you can argue that porn isn't degrading. When you look at someone in porn you see a sexual object or a fantasy not a real person. That is degrading. Further more he wasn't saying porn is morally equivalent to sweat shops, he was just using that as an example to illustrate the flaw in the interviewers thinking.

Both sexes enjoy having sex and getting paid for it!

smellyfooty 6 days ago
But porn glorifies rape, abuse, and mysogynism- destructive unconsensual acts. While a woman might agree to be a porn star, it is an act of desperation. They come from such poverty that porn is a tempting way for them to survive. With no other viable jobs open, they risk their lives to sell their bodies as merchandise. Many are substance abuse victims and have mental illnesses as well as suffer from std's and health issues. Society shapes their "consent" eliminating it and pushing them to it.

I admire Chomsky, but he's wrong here. Porn gives people, mainly men, a safe and legal sexual outlet that might otherwise require them to become predators. Chomsky is naive to think that if you eliminated porn, you would end the "degradation" of women. Men would simply turn their sexual appetites on real women instead of photographs.
shizzy35 1 month ago
@shizzy35 Some women in pornographic films experience sexual violence and torture - these women are real women. Men masturbate over their abuse... why the hell should these women be used as an outlet for scummy men?! Also, unless men are content to settle for masturbation, instead of sex, what you have said is rubbish and pornography is not a requisite for masturbation. Child pornography also provides a safe outlet for paedophiles, that might otherwise require them to become predators, right?!
AMeanderingSoul 4 weeks ago
@AMeanderingSoul, you sound exactly like the kind of unenlightened boob who would support antiporn laws. First off, 95% of porn does not involve "sexual violence and toture," unless it's completely staged. Secondly, I and most thinking people are 100% against child pornography. Third, most men do not "settle" for masturbation over real sex. They masturbate because they can't get or find real sex, you moron -- mainly because people like you are probably against legal prostitution, too.

And I'm betting they would disagree with you that they're being "mutilated" or "tortured." So stop acting hysterical and trying to impose your own set of morals on others.
shizzy35 4 weeks ago
@shizzy35 I'm not being hysterical or trying to "impose my own set of morals on others' and I'm not telling 'them', "what's right or wrong" - You're deluded. Some women in pornography are paid, some aren't and some are trafficked into pornography. The majority of viewers know nothing about most of the people they masturbate over... they don't know the names of the people or whether they have been coerced or forced into pornography... never mind what their goals are!
AMeanderingSoul 4 weeks ago
@AMeanderingSoul, right, some women aren't paid. Some choose to do it for free because they like the thrill of it. You have no more idea about it than anyone else, so stop acting like you do. My original point, which you don't seem to get, is that humans are sexual creatures. It's bred in. Just look at the sexually explicit cave drawings from prehistoric days. Porn has been around forever. Humans will find sex where they can get it. Porn is an outlet, whether you like it or not. So move on.
t
shizzy35 4 weeks ago
@shizzy35 Yeah, women are trafficked into pornography, children are sexually abused - their abuse is then recorded so men can masturbate. You are such a fucking lowlife, if you think people should just forget/ignore what's happening and 'move on'. Yes, people are sexual creatures but people are also capable of thinking, decision making and controlling themselves! Nobody needs to be abused so someone else can masturbate!
AMeanderingSoul 4 weeks ago
@AMeanderingSoul, I'm guessing you have about as much knowledge of the porn industry as Noam Chomsky, who has exactly zero. I'm sure neither you nor he has been within a solar system of anyone connected to the porn industry, yet you still think you're qualified to comment on it. Calling me a "lowlife" tells me all I need to know about what's between your ears. But you know what: my wife thinks I'm ok, and so do my two daughters. Now, go masturbate some of your sexual repression away.
shizzy35 4 weeks ago
@shizzy35 I didn't call you a lowlife, I said "you are such a fucking lowlife, IF you.." and IF that does apply to you, then you clearly aren't one of the "thinking people" that "are 100% against child pornography". Your original point was that pornography may prevent men from becoming sexual predators (unless you made a point previously that I haven't read), not that humans are sexual creatures... some people can be sexual beings and masturbate, without involving paper and computers!
AMeanderingSoul 4 weeks ago
@AMeanderingSoul, do you know how many people consume pornography? Hundreds and hundreds of millions. You know how many become actual sexual predators? Way less than 1% -- a figure so microscopic it's practically non-existent. Do you know how many people would become actual sexual predators if they didn't have porn and/or masturbation as an outlet? Many many millions more than now. I know this because I'm a writer who has reported on it. You, on the other hand, are just an uninformed gasbag.
shizzy35 4 weeks ago
@shizzy35 You are the absolute imbecile - Since you've done so much writing about the topic, how and why have you not mentioned trafficking and slavery? Masturbation is a sexual outlet. People are able to masturbate without using pornography. If masturbation is not enough to satisfy the person that masturbates, then your argument is false. The priest were able to masturbate but they chose to violate other people, just like many fathers do. The logic you use also applies to paedophiles.
AMeanderingSoul 4 weeks ago
@AMeanderingSoul, thanks for making my point for me. You don't even know the most basic things about the subject. The Catholic Church teaches that masturbation is "a grave moral disorder" and and "an intrinsically and seriously disordered act." Ergo, priests are not supposed to do it, and if they are caught doing it, they can be expelled from the priesthood. As for "trafficing" and "slavery:" these are so rare in porn they are statistically insignificant. Again, do some research, you idiot.

@ilshockll He probably doesn't like the idea that women are being paid to have sex on camera. Its really no different than prostitution, other than the fact that its being filmed. JNathanK2011 1 month ago

Sexual fantasies have always existed whether we could film them or not. The only people who should be concerned if a fantasy is ok or not are the people involved. @johnalton22 I think it's a solid analogy. He isn't saying that porn is as bad as sweatshops, what he's arguing is that consent and payment don't make something good. You can find someone (convince someone) to do anything, especially if there's money involved.
Hirfel 2 months ago

To misandrists of the world, civilization would last without men until the car needed its oil to be changed.
heilbeezlebub 2 months ago
Mankind has created pornography almost since the day man was able to draw things in walls. Fighting against that is 100% pointless, if you give man a new form of communication, he will put porn in it, plain and simple.
ChevalierAguila 2 months ago
There are different types of pornography. He's talking about professional, male-driven pornography; there are other less degrading forms, or voluntary without pay forms, that he either is choosing not to talk about or just doesn't know about. Pornography is an umbrella term that applies to both extremes.
PaulSLambeth 2 months ago
As a man I enjoy watching pornography. I simply cannot resist the visual stimulation and pleasure I receive from watching it. On the other hand, its painfully unrealistic and can distort what is deemed as a "normal" or "healthy" sexuality. Yet, there is no coercion, after all the women do it out of their volition and not exclusively for the money. Do I think there's a better way to serve as an outlet for men's sexual desires? Not at the moment, so pornography would have to do.
VincitOmniaVerit 2 months ago
Wow, I had no idea Chomsky is against this. Honestly I don't have a problem with porn itself, I just think there are problems within the porn industry and they way in which they cater specifically to men. However, I don't think the answer is as simple as "eliminate the degradation of women", and comparing it to child porn is a bit of a stretch. Honestly, how do you define degradation? Where do you draw the line?? Why is sex seen as this horrible thing, but only with women??
m3rmaidbones 2 months ago
@m3rmaidbones I should rephrase: I don't have a problem with them catering to men. I have a problem with them catering to men 90% of the time, as though women don't have these same desires, and this same drive. The idea that women are, and should remain, pure is a MYTH. This creates a porn industry full of fake blondes, with fake boobs, faking their orgasms. The focus often is on the man's pleasure. You're more likely to see a woman with cum all over her face than have her clit rubbed.
m3rmaidbones 2 months ago
@m3rmaidbones Porn is desensitzation to natural instincts. Your brain is a chemical storehouse for hormones. Repeated exposures to sexual stimulus increases urges making the viewer continually addicted. Porn is as powerful and addictive as a super drug. And like any drug the consumer has to keep taking larger doses in order to stay satisfied since they are becoming dulled after their 1st intense exposure. So as sexuality escalates it turns animalistic and immoral: Rape, Sexual Violence, etc.
hitartizte 2 months ago
@hitartizte It rewrites the programming of your brain's usual functions, distorting your perception of reality making you live in a lizard brain / survival mode. Love in a relationship is not love after porn, partners become from a intimate companion into a flesh fantasy that they can not live up to as the highly idealized dream girls in the world of pornography. Porn degrades sex from a deep close bond into an animal feeding frenzy.
hitartizte 2 months ago
@hitartizte Sex IS a natural instinct, and your brain is not a storehouse for hormones! Unless you're talking about the hypothalamus? But even then it doesn't "store" it. I'm sorry I just don't get it. What hormones are you talking about anyway?
m3rmaidbones 2 months ago
@m3rmaidbones Sex is a union between two people who are married >.< natural instincts such as lust has nothing to do with marriage and union. You can be excited by anything that strikes you as erotic or attractive but that does not mean you are going to go marry it! That is like saying you are going to marry a girl after meeting her for one day. Sex hormones such as testosterone ( i probably butchered the spelling of that), estrogen, blah.
hitartizte 2 months ago
@hitartizte Well, that's your opinion. To me, marriage is just a piece of paper. I don't see anything wrong with casual sex or sex before marriage. If it's between consenting adults, then it's really none of your business.
m3rmaidbones 2 months ago
@m3rmaidbones it is the business of the family of the individuals commiting this indecency..
DarkprinX2500 1 month ago
@m3rmaidbones the institution of marriage is one of the oldest.. even the ancient egyptians believed in it.. but you and your crazy sexual liberal mindset . tells you.. no marriage is just a piece of paper.. congrats you and other people that subscribe to this mindset are the reason that aids spread so rapidly ..
DarkprinX2500 1 month ago
@DarkprinX2500 AHAHA OH MY GOD. AIDS spread because it was highly transmittable, because people didn't know what the fuck was going on, and people weren't using PROTECTION. You have got to be kidding me, you fucking idiot. Some people are monogamous, some people aren't. I personally am, because that's my choice and it's my business. Unlike you, I don't feel the need to stick my nose in other people's business and apparently put down people with a debilitating disease??? Just. wow.
m3rmaidbones 1 month ago
@hitartizte what your saying makes sense.. i agree with you
DarkprinX2500 1 month ago

Averagegamer100 2 months ago
Why does chomsky act like only women are featured in porn? Ever heard of gay porn? Yeesh how dishonest.
BigPharaoh600 2 months ago
Pornography has become just as harmful as meth, cocaine, alcohol and gambling (when taken to extremes) not to the pornographers and some of the actors and actresses but definitely for the ones addicted to it. I would bet that none of you know what it takes to be a porn star (sic). Pornography is not about promoting the beauty of love, women and the intimate relationship that is a result of the union between two people. It is about feeding an aberrant addiction...
lucripet 2 months ago
I agree to be honest. I used to go on porn sites, mostly for female masturbation videos, but every visitor brings them advertising revenue - adverts that included (what I hoped were simulations of) assault. Since watching this video I haven't been back.

to the people who don't think porn is degrading, honestly answer this simple question: Would u want to see ur mother, sister, or gf in porn?
vietorkorean 3 months ago 27
@vietorkorean
no, but thats because of the prospect of them having sex - not because of the degradation. There's plenty of porn that isn't degrading.
And to be quite frank, some women do enjoy being degraded - it's a turn on for them.

So ur telling me u don't have any problem if ur mother, sister or gf have a career in porn? No problem at all when someone call ur mother or sister a whore because of their profession? If it's just the prospect of them having sex that annoys u, then u don't have to watch it. It's not like porn is air on public TV channels (not talking about those ppv adult channels), u'd actually have to search it up on the internet if u wanna watch.
vietorkorean 2 months ago
@vietorkorean
T800System 2 months ago
@T800System what if it hurts you ...what if it hurts your family .. yes it does in every case
porn industry is no different and just as bad as prostitution..my solution would be to ban all live pornography..and only allow artificial porn like drawings cartoons.. so that way perverts get what they want..and nobody is exploited
DarkprinX2500 1 month ago
@vietorkorean If people like you didn't view porn actors as whores and disgusting humans, which you obviously do, then the career choice would be far more accepted then what it is now and then no one would care if someone they knew worked in porn. Not all porn is degrading, but alot of it is for the obvious reason that some women and men enjoy it. If you don't like it, don't watch it. What you are saying is in a way degrading to the people who get turned on by getting degraded.
ScottFraser1991 2 months ago

define "degrading".
With all due respect to Noam Chomsky, the paralel between sweat shops (child in the slums) and the porn industry (actress "degrading" herself) is outrageous.

"Porn is degrading to women. Except gay porn, I love that stuff."
- Fake Noam Chomsky
@vietorkorean "Would u want to see ur mother, sister, or gf in porn?"
It's not a gender question: would you like to see your dad in it?
And it's not a sex question: would you like to see your mother, sister, or gf in an emo/rap/whatever-music-you-don't-like band?
Let's all go around preventing strangers from doing things we don't want to see our female relatives doing! Burka time!

yunged 2 months ago
@yunged
Oh well...
vietorkorean 2 months ago
@vietorkorean No But that is the reason that people look at porn because it is looking at someone they don't know. The strangers who are doing it and the people who are sponsoring it (by paying to watch it) are all prisoners of their own device.
shadowfighting88 1 month ago in playlist Media Education Foundation on Sexist Media, Sexism, etc. 3
@vietorkorean Illogical. I wouldn't want to see my mom or sister in porn for the same reasons I wouldn't want to see them naked. I wouldn't want to see my gf in porn for the same reason that I wouldn't want her to be penetrated by other men. Nothing to do with degradation.
billybones116 1 month ago
@billybones116
That's actually a very good argument. Simple yet clear. So if it got nothing to do with degradation, u wouldn't feel ashamed or anything if people call ur mom a whore cuz she does porn?
vietorkorean 1 month ago
@vietorkorean
I don't care if it's degrading or not. Working at McDonalds is degrading in a lot of peoples minds. That doesn't give me or anyone else the right to ban people from doing it.
thelibertarianway 1 month ago
@vietorkorean Some people LIKE to fuck on film and have people watch them get fucked. And they are very thankful they can get paid for doing it. It's nothing like a sweat shop, you don't have orgasms at a nike factory.
l80sman104 1 month ago
I'm surprised how angry people are about what noam said. I don't think you can argue that porn isn't degrading. When you look at someone in porn you see a sexual object or a fantasy not a real person. That is degrading. Further more he wasn't saying porn is morally equivalent to sweat shops, he was just using that as an example to illustrate the flaw in the interviewers thinking.
