Terrific vid as always, Terry, I'm a huge fan of yours ;)
You're one of a kind in our small unicycling world, please don't stop !
On a more technical note, I believe a geared 36er might actually be safer to ride fast, because you can stick to "long" cranks and keep the cadence lower thus gaining stability... Will have to try it one day anyway, you know that, don't you ?
(anyways, "above" the 36", what is the next challenge besides the Schlumpf ? ;))
Thanks! Well, I thought about a geared 36er, but most of my bog wheel riding is for distance, not high speed. I can maintain a good 13-15 mph clip comfortably with the 114mm cranks I use, and that seems plenty for me. Anything faster and it would be hard to run it out if you bailed! :)
I bailed on my Nimbus NIghtrider as fast as I could. I rolled several times. The problem was that I leaned to far forward. I don't have any idea how fast I was going.
Oh well good times. If I can get a job I will save my money up for a Schlumpf geared hub.
So what exactly is considered the "FASTEST" speed on a 36, for any crank size? Nice video, love the remote control gag! I just got my new 36 with standard 150mm cranks and love it the way it is. I might go down to 125s but not for a while!
Congrats on your new 36er, you'll love it! Well, at least for me, I consider 15-17 mph pretty fast. I wouldn't want to fall at that speed since staying on your feet would be pretty hard! I've heard of some coming close to 30 mph on geared cokers, which is amazing, but totally nuts, imo!
Kris holm is comming out with new cranks in april, they will be the shortest yet and they r double holed, im pretty sure the smallest holes are 100mm, and i cant wait to get em on my new 29' Kris holm, it came with the standerd 150 cranks, but it's way to slow 4 me lol;)
I've tried 102mm but don't like them, it takes too much just to maintain speed even on flat ground..for me anyway. I started with 150's a long time ago, then 125, and since about a year afo I use 114's and love them. They seem the perfect all-around size for me.
Haha no way! There is one guy who came very close to that but on a GEARED 36er! And remember, I was holding a camera, riding in a headwind and no gears. (not to mention I'm no spring chicken at nearly 53!)
Well there is a very new type of geared hub for both the big 36ers, and also for mountain unicycles. It kicks it into one higher gear only, but it makes the 36er like a 54" wheel, so you can get some serious speed! But they suck for uphill.
oh lol! Well, the hub shifter is a button on each side and sticks out above the axle bolt. You "click" it with your heel to change the gear, but doing that while riding is very tricky. $1,300 for that hub alone!
Wow that's awesome! What size cranks did you use? I also assume you're not over 50 like me, lol! Yeah I'm going for 20mph I think that will be my top. In fact, I think I can go faster with my 114's than 102's, but I'm not sure. I might have to try those.
Btw, how did you confirm the top speed? The gps is much more accurate than those cycle computers, which are ok but not as accurate.
I used 127mm cranks and I confirmed the speed via the car I was racing through the intersection haha, I think my cycle computer is about .2mph fast though... I'm switching down to 114's tonight gonna do a test run of it tomorrow morning. I'm not sure how I'll like it, I tried 89's once and just couldn't spin as well and control was difficult, then I switched back up to my 127's and I averaged 11.5mph for 37 miles on my last ride.
Where did you get your watch? Will normal cycle computers work for my Nimbus?

That's a Garmin Forerunner GPS. They cost about $150 or so.

Really? I thought I'd seen these guys going like 30 mph... Is that true?

Nice speed.

What does gearing do? Is it like on a mountain bike or what? How does that work?

How do you control it? Is there a handle or something?
Elswalbe 3 years ago
the uni or the camera, lol? The camera has a mini tripod which I left folded up and gripped it. The 36er also has a coker touring handle.

No, the geared hub :)

WOW! I don't think I'd like to pay that much. No wonder you don't have one.
