Sgouros is a very intelligent musician. A mathematicien also. Arthur Rubinstein was impressed by this musician. I cannot understand the jealous critics here.....
Technically, his playing is flawless and he does this concerto rather well overall. There are parts in this piece where it requires more "gravitas". Pouncing on some of those dissonant chords and more use of the pedal to create more of a sumptuous sound is desired. But this is pretty good....
I first heard this piece in an old LP of my dad's that's one of many he kept (thank god) and by the end of it I didn't know what had just happened to me, it was like getting hit by I truck, this is some of the best written music ever, and I think Prokofiev doesn't get the credit he deserves.
Totally agree. Prokofiev is one of my all-time favorites and it is my humble yet strong opinion that he is easily one of the 20th century's greatest composers, if not one of the greatest of all time. His fusion of traditional and modern elements, his never cliched used of melody, and his craftsmanship and sense of direction are all nearly unparalleled.
No, I don't love him. I just like the rhythmic quality in his Prokofiev - it's better than Ollie Mustonen. And I'm a guy as well. I'm not gay. When I like a performance, I go over the top. It's my trait.
What about you. How do you know he's fat and bald?
Prokofiev is the best example as to what a modern composer should strive for, passion, rhythimic originality, and distinctive harmonic styles, something that today's composers clearly lack.
It's on at the Wiener Konzerthaus in Vienna on January 16. Vladimir Jurowski conducting the Russian National Orchestra, with Simon Trpceski as soloist (along with Rachmaninov's Isle of the Dead and Shostakovich's 6th). Can't wait!
Anyone else frustrated by the amount of camera movement during this? There are a couple of places where his hands are just going like lightning, and the camera is doing a slow pan out to show the whole orchestra. I WANTED TO SEE HIS HANDS! I don't mind occasionally cutting away to see other members of the orchestra, or the conductor, or even the pianist's face, but I think they should concentrate on showing his hands. Just MHO... :)
this will sound weird but when i hear the opening piano bit, i feel a bit like im inside a rubix cube in the hands of a genius, with crazy colourful squares flying around me...i have synasthesia lol
This is the best performance of this concert avaliable in youtube. Sgouros plays with fire and lucidity, like a thunder but with incredible clarity, as it should be played!
at 3:20 the whole thing seems to speed up and the piano become even more interlaced with the orchestra that calms a little, otherwise it could not keep up.
One of the most dynamic and exciting movements ever written for a piano concerto, and Prokofiev is not my favourite composer, although he comes close.
Sgouras is just plain good. He has passion in his performances you rarely see these days. Lots of sound tecnicians out there, but few who play with passion!
Sgouros is not tragically burn out... ha ha... his career is still burning rubber! he teaches, makes recordings, serves as a judge at international piano competitions, travels around the globe giving concerts in the great capitals of the world... check out his website and other websites about him to see his schedule, download his generous free recordings, hear samples from his recent recordings, read his biography, see his many photos and awards, etc... Sgouros is Sgouros... a giant!
He didn't stop not practicing he now teaches at Greek academy .
He burned out ! Amazing technique and maniacal energy And RARE MUSICAL INTUTION NOnE OF U WILL EVER HAVE > u young people ( I wonder didwas I so inane at 13 or14 ) cant even hear music (especially in our culture nowadays and u make ridiculous staements about who is better .Geese!
The reason why Lang Lang and Yundi Li are more famous is because they're what I'd call 'pleasers' to the audience, and choose obvious repertiore, whereas Sgouros, beigna soul of intergrity, chooses music from his heart, not to be more popular, famous or rich.
@HwangMyungShin you are idiot .Yundi Li is the best is the world ,becuase he touch the keys smoothly, and with his heart better than others.Li has special personality.

The best performance there is:
Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra conducted by Daniele Gatti
Yuja Wang, piano
Sergei Prokofjev: Pianoconcert nr.3 op.26
Concertgebouw Amsterdam

Please never compare Lang Lang to Sgouros... Dimitris is on another planet.

I don't see this guy's special quality . Just mediocre for Prokofiev. and even his tempo is not really good.

That's how Prokofiev is supposed to be played - this isn't Chopin or Rachmaninov.

I don't think he's rushing at all. I think his recording is the one, out of all the ones on here, that come closest to Prokofiev's.
