i hope you read this(BUT you wont) in 86 ,finally i decided i liked the smiths, now i love the smiths...you broke up..and on another video i posted summat..and was told the smiths was johnny's band and he and morrisey are friends!!!!!,,,,so why not reform?,,,there must be new songs,i don't think the talent has gone,,sure morrrisey's making tonnes of cash but the hunger must be there....stop being selfish. end of.
Now,now Johnny - don't get get all bitter on us! You know FULL WELL that since leaving the Smiths your career has nose-dived from being considered a guitar genius to part-playing obscurity. You may as well talk about the Smiths for eternity because let's be honest most of us care less about about your "work" with Modest mouse,Electronic,Johnny Marr & the healers or indeed the (truly awful) Cribbs!
Even though, sadly, I wasn't born in time to experience the Smiths, I still love their music. They are a beautiful band, with beautifully written songs. I found them thanks to the book the Perks of Being a Wallflower, and fell in love with them. Being born in the 90s, and experiencing the music of this decade, makes me wonder how I could ever have listened to anything else, because now all that I listen to are 80s Rock bands.
It's nice to hear Bert Jansch get a nod - and even nicer to know Morrissey 'got it'. It's terribly sad to hear Marr speak of Morrissey, but I do like that he is honest about the difference between the professional and the personal.
johny marr is just a very lucky man so is morrissey they were misfits in the eighties.i admire both these men but they're talking about things they can't articulate properly so they should'nt bother.
@TheKevoko just luck? yes they were and always will be misfits thats where their genius came from why they're such deep artists. Johnnys guitaring is genius you can't say it was just luck, he was average - hes the best electric boy since Hendrix
Morley is one of the rare, rare, great writers who is special. His prose is totally first rate. I wanted to explain all this to him, in Brighton, in the street, I tried. I couldn`t get it across cos he was with his family. And of course I was just a normal guy on the street.
@Fredjim187 No, but he doesnt like people who comment on things as it takes ownership and is one sided. I think thats a rather bigoted attitude. Clearly he doesnt want dialogue or opinion on artists works.
The internet is a fishing net, yes it captures the "idiots and deranged nerds" but it also captures the intellectual music lover, who want to post their opinion in a very public forum.
Of course the internet is not the world, but to completely dismiss it in this day and age is arrogant. Not to mention that he thinks commenting takes ownership? really? i'm glad he isn't trying to sell democracy?
However, he has made his money and has no need to care.
@scoop909 But the overwhelming majority of comments seem to come from badly informed hateful nerds and the sort of deranged super fan-boys geeks who think they are owed something. Maybe this will change when more and more well-adjusted, normal people start to use the internet.
@towerblockrock you are generalising just as much as he was. The latest stats say that 825,094,396 people use the internet in Europe alone. The majority of those people cannot be "deranged super fan-boy geeks" law of averages denotes that at the most 50% of those will not be the type you described.
Im done arguing this point, you appear to be a Marr "fan-boy" and i, despite always being a fan of his work, have now changed my opinion of him after hearing his arrogant and self righteous comments.
@scoop909 You stats don't reflect the amount of crap on the net. I'm a Mancunian who is old enough to have seen The Smiths 3 times. You realise as you get older that people who weren't 'there' can never *ever* know. I don't think Marr is interested in the opinions of people who probably weren't even born when The Smiths split. The sense of entitlement and over-inflated importance that internet super fans have is truly nauseating. It's very gracious of you to concede defeat, though.
He called him Mozza! See, even after all these years, they're still friends.

@s3c0ndsk1n interesting that you don't quite deny my point that his career after The Smiths has been somewhat lacklustre - fine by me then.

Not everyone posting is necessarily looking for a catfight.
But I can see where he's coming from. And in some counts, he is right.
