I am a tenor and I respect Vargas as one of the greatest masters of Donizetti. (See also Una vergine un angel di Dio) Vould be happy to take lessons with him.
I'm agree that he's an underappreciated singer. He's a victim of the "three tenors", that cover all this generation fo singers with their very well promoted horrible concerts. They forgot another excelent artist like Vargas... sorry for the music and opera!
I saw Ramon in Un Ballo Maschera at HGO this season and i have to say....as much as I love his voice the role was entirely too big for him. I was disappointed.
What precisely was disappointing to you? Did he sound vocally weak all evening or less inspired for some reason? He has sung Riccardo a number of times before in Italy and elsewhere with good reviews. I think he has been singing a lot these past five months or so, commuting between Germany and Italy for LUISA MILLER, TRAVIATA, BALLO and filling in for Villazon, etc. After HGO, he sings again with Urmana in BALLO & REQUIEM, more LUISA,etc. He must cut back.
I heard him live in last season's Onegin (March) with Dimitri and Renee at the Met. He stole the show IMHO. He sang sweetly but forcefully. This is very beautiful and sincere singing, here.
Absolutely stupendous and moving performance!!! Ramon Vargas is one of the very best Edgardos ever. It's sometimes frustrating, with all the talent and extraordinary voice he has, no one has seen fit to record wonderful performances like this one under better conditions (no offense to the theatre and video provider). If there are better video recordings of this artist in live opera (from the MET or any opera house), why are they not released for public consumption ? Thanks for posting.
