I'm gonna go on a limb here and say I believe the forest level was messing with the controls. Kinda like how there are two levels in DKC3 that screw with controls. But it's just a guess.

Since i know you guys don't want to deal with all the hell of secrets, i'll tell you that the secret for "Underground Battle Arena" (SPOILER) is right when you hit the halfway point, keep going right until you reach the water, then immediately drop down onto the blocks, they will fall and then you keep swimming to the left where the block and pipe is...go down the pipe and go back through the pipe, do not go left after you go down the pipe (hope this helps)

Apparently it just got to a point where there were so many contradictions and some games stated Birdo was a girl. Let's just agree on labeling Birdo "it", then.

@jagmantistribe We grind of lives in the second level of the game. There's shells that shoot out of a pipe in the last part of the level, and if you follow one just right, it hits goomabs, and you get like 10 lives.

@WiiRikeToPray Grind on the pyramid stage in this world. I forget which level it was exactly, but it was the stage where all those blocks made up pyramids (And you guys hit P switches to turn them into coins)

At one point there was a pyramid with a green pipe that constantly spawned turtles. You kick one turtle shell and let it rebound between two coin blocks as turtles endlessly spawn and fall into the pit. Hard to explain, but you'll know what I mean if you try it. easy 99!!!!!
