I can't believe i've found this. I was 17, crushed against the barrier stage right to see "MY" band! Can still clearly picture the girl in a blue sailor oufit I couldn't nerve myself up to talk to, and feel the bruise developing as my chest worked against the scaffold pole to keep me breathing. Thank you Mr Weirdo!
@offthelinegt that's what he did, it's clear enough, look, but since you say 'wrong', explain what Bono did with his belt from what you know. Belt-gate drama.
How could you say that Bono has energy? Have you ever seen him running around the stage at the 360 tour? Or swinging on his microphone during UV for gods sake
What in god's name is up with Bono and his trousers 0:58 - 1:44 ??! Pee himself? Stiffy? He actually tries to hide behind The edge at one point. Hilarious. This rocks though.
bono talked about this gig in U2 by U2 - he flipped out because he was sick of how bands are judged on their looks as much as their sound. shame that problem's still around today...it should be all about the music.
Amazing perfomance!!! Bono is over the top, but also compelling, bringing the audience out of their comfort zone. This was probably because he was playing before Echo & the Bunnymen, THE press favourites back then. U2 performance was even panned by the NME. The review said "...U2 really are quite awful". Can't believe it!! I mean, hints of future triumphs were already there...
jeez. hunting a load of old faves tonight and found this.
I was at this gig! - hung around outside for about 3 hrs, and managed to get into the sound check, and the Edge got me and a mate on the guest list. Cracking memories. 1st time I saw em live.
I'm hunting now for a BBC live session, form late 79/early 80...it was from Ireland, and Stiff Little Fingers played on the same programme. had it on vhs but can't find it anywhere.
@munchie63 : I'm afraid that if I ever ran into you at a pub I would talk your ear off about this show. I've seen U2 28 times but never before 1986--my parents just plain wouldn't let me go to concerts before then. Oh well. Thanks for sharing your story.
@SOUPY2500 - well this video is running about 6% too fast! alot of old music videos don't run at the speed they were recorded at - that accounts for the breakneck speed they're playing at in this song. still.....bloody awesome though.
@SOUPY2500 dude, for fuck sakes he was like 20 here and is now like 50 ... lets see if you have the energy that you did when you were 20 at 50 .. moron
that was recorded at the Lyceum in London in 1980. It's an official video that was part of a promo package of live clips including 11 o'clock and A day without me (both filmed at Leixlip Castle). Should be all on YouTube. I don't think there's more material of this gig but check the gig at Belfast University 1981. Similar energy.
The intimacy offered by small venues like this & the power of concentration of sound & the vibe that you get between the band and the audeince can`t be replicated in bigger arenas, and certainly not in the pack `em in by the shedload warehouse stadiums.
Bonos pants ripped!

Awesome. Right on the edge of punk. I had to wait until 1984 to see them in San Francisco...with The Waterboys.

great song. but because of this bad video coding/"jerking effect", they look like they're on speed. :) lol

@ValleysOfSaturn this is a speeded up video, their notes are higher pitch than they played at that time

@skrason . hi i saw them a few times in cork in 1980 but havent seen them since 86.they lost a lot of that early energy i think,

Speeded up tape, not real life speed/pitch, they are tuned to Eflat but that's not what you here with the speeded up tape.
Somewhere between E and Eflat in the tape speed. Less than a half step difference in speed/pitch up

This is fuckin apeshit!. Wow .Still one of the best live acts in the world but I only wish Bono had 1/5 that energy these days..
