This is very practical if your on survival situation and you have the plastic. Collect the water, dry your tinder, start the fire, than drink the water.
Very nice, another great idea. I took your idea and used on small scale, have a look at this video and let me know what ya think. Fire from Fresnel Lens
dear dan what you discovered is actually written and discussed in the sacred jewish talmud reffering to the lighting of fire on a holy day. the scholars talk about ways of lighting fire. one by rubbing stones one by sticks one by mixing certain kinds of earth and one by water.. the way to light fire by water is exactly the way you showed only they used glass instead of plastic (i just learned it this saturday and i got your video in my email right after.. are you a prophet or what !?)

@onmyown12 He didn't. As early as 700 BC, the Assyrians used polished crystal to magnify objects. Ancient Egypt and Babylon used similar objects and the ancient Romans and Greeks filled glass spheres with water for the same purpose. Seneca, the Roman philosopher, wrote about filling transparent vessels with water in order to magnify objects seen through them.
@HackSilent - Not directly under the plastic on the ground where the sun would be concentrated, at least probably not. Not unless the rain was coming down at a 45 degree angle.
Dan, its a neat idea for heat something. I was thinking that a stand could be made to have it over a pool. Then you could have a very inexpensive solar pool water heater.
Haha you are a genius! That looks almost like a marketable product. If you make a bag out of it with bungy strap holes on the corners. O jeez forget it! Who wants lawyers anyways? I guess it's dangerous enough just giving people the idea!
Excellent, very educational video Dan! I knew water could be used as a lens, such as in simple microscopes, but never thought of it as a solar concentrator. Did you come up with this on your own? If so, congrats on your ingenuity.
@marylou178 The bowl would need to be literally round inside and on the bottom. If not the flat bottom would not let the glass function as a focusing lens.
Anthony Hopkins said you can get fire from ice by melting the ice into a convex shape with your hand and using it like a magnifying glass. That was from that movie The Edge.
@nwstraith interesting, run a line of them along in the direction the sun travels. all day there woudl be at least 3 of those bad boys kicking heat into that pipe! genius!
We need more people like you here in Cancún, México. Do you want to come here to see all the people that would love to implement many of your ideas? :D You could be amazed. -I'm one of those-
The only problem : we kind of have our sun stolen from us for several days now. The Sun seems to be shining so rare now :( I was puzzled that the plastic didn't melt...
Way to go! Fire from water! I am putting clear plastic in my survival gear. Ofcourse your in FL, and I'm in WA. All I'll probably accomplish is rain water collection, lol!
